Diego Portales has become a true legend of Chilean political history, a controversial figure who has prompted very differentki nds of interpretation. The aim of this article is to analyze the origin of his political myth. We will study the final phase of the minister's political activities in 1837 from the perspective of Machiavelli's The Prince. By means of the Florentine philosopher's modern political theory, we may explain the circumstances which surrounded the death of Portales. A look at Portales's funeral reveals that it responded to a need to create a republican tradition at the time of the birth of the Hispano-American nations

Relaciones entre la semántica y la sintaxis: cuestiones teóricas sobre la propuesta de Jackendoff

The present work wants to be a survey and a revision of Jackendoff’s theory on the relations between semantics and syntax. It is specially based on questions related to Thematic Theory (è-Theory), asking whether the Lexical-Conceptual Structures (LCSs) system proposed by the mentioned author substitutes in an effective way to tradicional concepts such as ‘è-roles’ and ‘è-Hierarchy’. Moreover, we’ll be asked whether or not the analyzed proposal can be positively evaluated from a minimalist perspective, that is, relative to the Minimalist Program in the Generative Grammar.Este trabajo pretende llevar a cabo una revisión de la teoría de Jackendoff en lo que atañe a las relaciones entre la semántica y la sintaxis. Se centra en especial en cuestiones relativas a la Teoría Temática (Teoría-θ), planteándose si realmente el sistema de Estructuras Léxico-Conceptuales (ELCs) propuesto por el mencionado autor sustituye de manera efectiva los conceptos tradicionales de ‘papeles-θ' y ‘Jerarquía-θ'. Fission yeast α-glucan synthase Mok1 requires the actin cytoskeleton to localize the sites of growth and plays an essential role in cell morphogenesis downstream of protein kinase C function

et al.In fission yeast protein kinase C homologues (Pck1 and Pck2) are essential for cell morphogenesis. We have isolated mok1+ in a genetic screen to identify downstream effectors for Pck1/2. mok1+ is essential for viability and encodes a protein that has several membrane-spanning domains and regions homologous to glucan metabolic enzymes. mok1 mutant shows abnormal cell shape, randomization of F-actin and weak cell wall. Biochemical analysis shows that Mok1 appears to have α-glucan synthase activity. Mok1 localization undergoes dramatic alteration during the cell cycle. It localizes to the growing tips in interphase, the medial ring upon mitosis, a double ring before and dense dot during cytokinesis. Double immunofluorescence staining shows that Mok1 exists in close proximity to actin. The subcellular localization of Mok1 is dependent upon the integrity of the F-actin cytoskeleton. Conversely, overexpression of mok1+ blocks the translocation of cortical actin from one end of the cell to the other. pck2 mutant is synthetically lethal with mok1 mutant, delocalizes Mok1 and shows a lower level of α-glucan. These results indicate that Mok1 plays a crucial role in cell morphogenesis interdependently of the actin cytoskeleton and works as one of downstream effectors for Pck1/2.The initial part of this work was supported by a grant from Kyowa Hakko Co. Vegetable protein isolates

This chapter discusses the importance of vegetable proteins as functional ingredients in food formulations. It provides an overview of the main chemical components, world production, history and food applications of the main vegetable protein sources (legumes, cereals, oilseeds, roots and green leaves), with special emphasis on soybean, pea, and wheat. The chapter includes a description of the composition and structure of the main protein fractions, and a general approach to protein extraction, purification and processing technology to prepare protein meals, concentrates and isolates. In addition, the technologically important functional properties of vegetable protein preparations are described. Evaluation of the skills required in the analysis of an organizational system

Se determina si alumnos del Instituto Tecnológico de Sonora, México, desarrollan las competencias para realizar un análisis de procesos en una organización. Se aplicó un instrumento tipo rúbrica de 14 ítems con escala Likert de cuatro niveles, para evaluar 98 proyectos desarrollados por los alumnos, encontrando que cuando cursan la materia de análisis de sistemas demuestran capacidad para describir una empresa y analizar sus procesos, habilidades básicas en su formación académica, y que deberían seguir exhibiendo más adelante en su proceso formativo, pero no lo hacen, es decir, aunque sepan qué es lo que tienen que hacer y cómo hacerlo no lo realizan, ya sea porque no sabe cómo o porque no se les solicita. Se debe fomentar el uso de las competencias que ya han sido desarrolladas para fortalecerlas y se cumpla con las expectativas que se tienen de egresado.It is determined whether students from the Technological Institute of Sonora, Mexico, develop the skills to perform an analysis of processes in an organization. An instrument with 14 items in Likert scale of four levels was applied to assess 98 projects developed by students. The findings are that when they take the course of systems analysis they demonstrate the ability to describe and analyse business processes, basic skills in their academic training, and should continue to show later in the educational process, but they do not, that is, even if they know what to do and how to do it, do not, either because they do not know how or because it is not requested. It should encourage the use of skills that have been developed to strengthen and fulfil the expectations we have of a graduate

Effect of stress and/or field annealing on the magnetic behavior of the „Co77Si13.5B9.5…90Fe7Nb3 amorphous alloy

Variations of coercive field, induced magnetic anisotropy, and saturation magnetostriction constant in sCo77Si13.5B9.5d90Fe7Nb3 amorphous ribbons submitted to stress and/or axial magnetic-field annealing are reported. The annealing was carried out by using the Joule-heating effect saverage temperature values of the sample corresponding to the intensity of the electrical current were 273, 378, 409, and 445 °Cd and the applied stress and axial magnetic field during the thermal treatments were 500 MPa and 750 A/m, respectively. As a result of these treatments, a uniaxial in-plane magnetic anisotropy, which affects drastically the soft magnetic character of the samples, was developed.Ministerio de Ciencia y Tecnología de España-MAT2001-0082-C04-0
