Conductive 3D printed PLA composites: On the interplay of mechanical, electrical and thermal behaviours

    Get PDF
Additive manufacturing (AM) techniques represent a real challenge to manufacture novel composites with cou- pled multifunctional properties. This work focuses on the mechanical, electrical and thermal behaviours of 3D printed polymeric composites of polylactic acid (PLA) filled with carbon black (CB) conductive particles. The incorporation of conductive particles within the polymer matrix allows for programmable conduction paths via the printing process, whose electric properties are intimately coupled to thermo‐mechanical processes. In this study, samples were prepared using a fused deposition modelling (FDM) printer, controlling the filament ori- entation to manufacture three different types: longitudinal (0°); transverse (90°); oblique (±45°) printing ori- entations. Different types of multifunctional characterisation have been made: (i) electro‐thermal tests, evaluating the influence of electrical conductivity on the sample temperature due to Joule’s heating; (ii) thermo‐electrical tests, analysing the influence of temperature on the DC resistance of the samples; (iii) mechano‐electrical tests, analysing the effect of mechanical deformation on the specimens’ electric resistance. The results show a strong dependence of printing direction on the material properties of 3D printed conductive‐ PLA and identify strong thermo‐electro‐mechanical interplays. The results of this work will contribute to the AM progress in functional electro‐mechanical components with potential applications in biosensing devices, composite sensors, 3D electrodes and soft robotic industry. The authors acknowledge financial support from Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades, Spain, Agencia Estatal de Inves- tigación y Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional, Spain, under Grant number RTI2018‐094318‐BI00. Surgical navigation, augmented reality, and 3D printing for hard palate adenoid cystic carcinoma en-bloc resection: case report and literature review

    Get PDF
Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma is a rare and aggressive tumor representing less than 1% of head and neck cancers. This malignancy often arises from the minor salivary glands, being the palate its most common location. Surgical en-bloc resection with clear margins is the primary treatment. However, this location presents a limited line of sight and a high risk of injuries, making the surgical procedure challenging. In this context, technologies such as intraoperative navigation can become an effective tool, reducing morbidity and improving the safety and accuracy of the procedure. Although their use is extended in fields such as neurosurgery, their application in maxillofacial surgery has not been widely evidenced. One reason is the need to rigidly fixate a navigation reference to the patient, which often entails an invasive setup. In this work, we studied three alternative and less invasive setups using optical tracking, 3D printing and augmented reality. We evaluated their precision in a patient-specific phantom, obtaining errors below 1 mm. The optimum setup was finally applied in a clinical case, where the navigation software was used to guide the tumor resection. Points were collected along the surgical margins after resection and compared with the real ones identified in the postoperative CT. Distances of less than 2 mm were obtained in 90% of the samples. Moreover, the navigation provided confidence to the surgeons, who could then undertake a less invasive and more conservative approach. The postoperative CT scans showed adequate resection margins and confirmed that the patient is free of disease after two years of follow-up.This work has been supported by projects PI18/01625 (Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades, Instituto de Salud Carlos III and European Regional Development Fund “Una manera de hacer Europa”) and IND2018/TIC-9753 (Comunidad de Madrid)

We remember that the first question asked at the beginning of this project was: Are Supply Chain Management and Logistics synonyms? to which we came to interpret by the different investigations that Logistics is an indispensable part and of course is developed from the term Supply Chain or Cadena de Abastecimiento in spanish, where all the processes that have to do with each part of its composition are collected, from that interpretation begins to develop an exhaustive research work on the company Monplast S.A.S, to know its suppliers at each level, from the most critical to the slightest importance, its internal processes within the supply chain, the management of its inventories, the distribution of its warehouses, the processes established in the different formats and from that basis, an improvement is established for each of the steps in terms of what happens, under what conditions it happens, how it is carried out, who is involved and what criteria are part of their decisions, Taking different statistics, surveys, internal and external research, different opportunities for improvement were presented in written form following the guidelines, with the objective of presenting to the person in charge, so that if the company considers it viable, it can be applied within its processes and thus be more efficient, effective, reduce unnecessary costs and improve relations with both internal and external customers

Effects of GLP-1 receptor agonists on neurological complications of diabetes

    Get PDF
Emerging evidence suggests that treatment with glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) could be an interesting treatment strategy to reduce neurological complications such as stroke, cognitive impairment, and peripheral neuropathy. We performed a systematic review to examine the evidence concerning the effects of GLP-1 RAs on neurological complications of diabetes. The databases used were Pubmed, Scopus and Cochrane. We selected clinical trials which analysed the effect of GLP-1 RAs on stroke, cognitive impairment, and peripheral neuropathy. We found a total of 19 studies: 8 studies include stroke or major cardiovascular events, 7 involve cognitive impairment and 4 include peripheral neuropathy. Semaglutide subcutaneous and dulaglutide reduced stroke cases. Liraglutide, albiglutide, oral semaglutide and efpeglenatide, were not shown to reduce the number of strokes but did reduce major cardiovascular events. Exenatide, dulaglutide and liraglutide improved general cognition but no significant effect on diabetic peripheral neuropathy has been reported with GLP-1 RAs. GLP-1 RAs are promising drugs that seem to be useful in the reduction of some neurological complications of diabetes. However, more studies are neededThis work was supported by the Instituto de Salud Carlos III (PI19/01375) co-financed with FEDER programme fund. Get PDF

Cellular and humoral immunogenicity of the mRNA-1273 SARS-CoV-2 vaccine in patients with hematologic malignancies

    Get PDF
Recent studies have shown a suboptimal humoral response to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccines in patients diagnosed with hematologic malignancies; however, data about cellular immunogenicity are scarce. The aim of this study was to evaluate both the humoral and cellular immunogenicity 1 month after the second dose of the mRNA-1273 vaccine. Antibody titers were measured by using the Elecsys and LIAISON anti–SARS-CoV-2 S assays, and T-cell response was assessed by using interferon-γ release immunoassay technology. Overall, 76.3% (184 of 241) of patients developed humoral immunity, and the cellular response rate was 79% (184 of 233). Hypogammaglobulinemia, lymphopenia, active hematologic treatment, and anti-CD20 therapy during the previous 6 months were associated with an inferior humoral response. Conversely, age >65 years, active disease, lymphopenia, and immunosuppressive treatment of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) were associated with an impaired cellular response. A significant dissociation between the humoral and cellular responses was observed in patients treated with anti-CD20 therapy (the humoral response was 17.5%, whereas the cellular response was 71.1%). In these patients, B-cell aplasia was confirmed while T-cell counts were preserved. In contrast, humoral response was observed in 77.3% of patients undergoing immunosuppressive treatment of GVHD, whereas only 52.4% had a cellular response. The cellular and humoral responses to the SARS-CoV-2 mRNA-1273 vaccine in patients with hematologic malignancies are highly influenced by the presence of treatments such as anti-CD20 therapy and immunosuppressive agents. This observation has implications for the further management of these patients. The authors also thank the Cellex Foundation for providing research facilities and equipment and the CERCA Programme/Generalitat de Catalunya for institutional support
