Disminución en los parámetros espermáticos de ratones tratados con el extracto hidroalcohólico de Tropaeolum tuberosum “mashua”

In this work, we provided a Tropaeolum tuberosum hydroalcoholic extract to male mice (780 mg kg-1) for 7, 14 and 21 days treatment, there was no significant difference in body weight gain, testes, epididymides and prostate weight (p> 0.05), nevertheless progressive motility decreased and immobile sperm count increased significantly after 21 days treatment (p <0.05). The sperm count in the epididymis cauda decreased in the 3 three assessments, concentration on 21 days treatment was significantly lower than those of 7 and 14 days treatments (p <0.05). Our results suggest, that T. tuberosum has a direct action on the male reproductive system decreasing spermatic parameters without exerting toxic effects on mice.Se proporcionó extracto hidroalcohólico de Tropaeolum tuberosum a ratones machos (780 mg kg-1) durante 7, 14 y 21 días. Los tratamientos no produjeron diferencias significativas en la ganancia de peso corporal, y en el peso de los testículos, epidídimos y la próstata. Sin embargo, la movilidad progresiva espermática disminuyó y el recuento de espermatozoides inmóviles aumentó, ambos significativamente, después de 21 días de tratamiento (p <0.05). La concentración de espermatozoides en la cola del epidídimo disminuyó en las tres evaluaciones, la concentración espermática después de 21 días de tratamiento fue significativamente menor en comparación a 7 y 14 días de tratamiento (p <0.05). Nuestros resultados sugieren que T. tuberosum tiene una acción directa sobre el sistema reproductor masculino disminuyendo los parámetros espermáticos, sin ejercer efectos tóxicos en los ratones

Binaries with total eclipses in the LMC: potential targets for spectroscopy

Composición química de Apodanthera biflora, una cucurbitácea del bosque seco del noroeste peruano

The dry forest of northwestern Peru is the habitat of numerous native species that have received little attention beyond taxonomic purposes. Here we report the chemical composition of the roots and seeds of a set of accessions of Apondanthera biflora, a wild Cucurbit with potentialities as a food resource. The roots show features that are comparable to those from cassava roots and potato tubers: a high content of carbohydrates on a dry matter basis (77.5 – 84.9%), with starch representing around 20% of the total dry matter. The seeds’ fat content on a dry matter basis (22.22 – 39.37%) falls within the percentages found in oily seeds such as safflower, whereas the protein content (21.37 – 29.06%) is similar to that of flax and sunflower. The fatty acid profile of the seed’s oil shows a predominance of polyunsaturated acids, in particular linoleic acid (43.81%), making it comparable to that of cotton oil. Our results confirm the nutritional value of Apodanthera biflora and set the ground for its use in domestication and food security programs.han sido poco estudiadas. En este trabajo se reporta la composición química de las raíces y semillas de un grupo de accesiones de Apodanthera biflora, una cucurbitácea silvestre con potencial nutricional. Las raíces muestran una composición comparable a la de la yuca y la papa: un alto contenido de carbohidratos en base al peso seco (77,5 - 84,9%), entre los cuales destaca el almidón con alrededor de 20% del peso seco. El contenido de grasas de la semilla en base al peso seco (22,22 - 39,37%) está dentro del rango descrito en semillas oleaginosas como las de cártamo, mientras que el contenido de proteínas (21,37 - 29,06%) es similar al hallado en semillas de lino y girasol. En el perfil de ácidos grasos del aceite de la semilla se observa un predominio de los ácidos grasos poliinsaturados, en particular del ácido linoleico (43,81%), que lo hace comparable al del aceite de algodón. Los resultados confirman el valor nutricional de Apodanthera biflora y sienta las bases para su domesticación y aprovechamiento en programas de seguridad alimentaria

First observational evidence of a North Madagascar Undercurrent

<i>In situ</i> observations reveal a southeastward-directed North Madagascar Undercurrent (NMUC) below and opposite to the equatorward-directed North Madagascar Current (NMC) off Cape Amber, at the northern tip of Madagascar. Results show an undercurrent hugging the continental slope with its core at 460 m depth and velocities over 0.7 m s-1. Its volume transport is estimated to be 3.1–3.8 Sv, depending on the velocity extrapolation methods used to fill in the data gaps near the slope (no-slip and full-slip, respectively). The thermohaline characteristics show a saltier and warmer NMUC, compared to the surrounding offshore waters, transporting mainly South Indian Central Water. Also, strong horizontal gradients of density are found in the NMUC domain. An inshore cell of coastal downwelling due to Ekman Transport toward the coast is identified, which can explain, at least in part, the strong baroclinic pressure gradients as well as the NMUC development and possible persistence

Nuevas citas de Eleutherodactylus Duméril y Bibron, 1841 (Anura, Leptodactylidae) para Bolivia

Five species of the genus Eleutherodactylus (Anura, Leptodactylidae) are reported from Bolivia for the first time: E. altamazonicus from Departments Pando and La Paz; E. carvalhoi from Cochabamba; and E. ockendeni, E. skydmainos and E. zimmermanae from Pando. New departmental records are provided for other species: E. cruralis for Department Pando, E. danae for Beni and La Paz, E. platydactylus for Beni, E. toftae for Pando and La Paz and E. ventrimarmoratus for La Paz. Currently, 25 species of Eleutherodactylus are known in Bolivia. The taxonomic status of some species remains uncertain, new species are being described and others are still to be discovered. Therefore, the actual number of Bolivian Eleutherodactylus species is still unknown.En este trabajo se publican los primeros registros de cinco especies del género Eleutherodactylus (Anura, Leptodactylidae) para Bolivia: E. altamazonicus en los Departamentos de Pando y La Paz; E. carvalhoi en Cochabamba; y E. ockendeni, E. skydmainos y E. zimmermanae en Pando. Además, se aportan las primeras citas de E. cruralis para el Departamento de Pando, de E. danae para Beni y La Paz, de E. platydactylus para Beni, de E. toftae para Pando y La Paz y de E. ventrimarmoratus para La Paz. La diversidad conocida de Eleutherodactylus en Bolivia es de 25 especies, aunque los problemas taxonómicos sin resolver, las especies en descripción y el alto número de especies aún no citadas que se considera probable encontrar, hacen que aún desconozcamos la verdadera diversidad de este género en Bolivia

Coherent states for a particle on a sphere

The coherent states for a particle on a sphere are introduced. These states are labelled by points of the classical phase space, that is the position on the sphere and the angular momentum of a particle. As with the coherent states for a particle on a circle discussed in Kowalski K {\em et al} 1996 {\em J. Phys. A} {\bf 29} 4149, we deal with a deformation of the classical phase space related with quantum fluctuations. The expectation values of the position and the angular momentum in the coherent states are regarded as the best possible approximation of the classical phase space.
