    Bottom production in Photon and Pomeron -- induced interactions at the LHC

    In this paper we present a detailed comparison of the bottom production in gluon -- gluon, photon -- gluon, photon -- photon, pomeron -- gluon, pomeron -- pomeron and pomeron -- photon interactions at the LHC. The transverse momentum, pseudo -- rapidity and ξ\xi dependencies of the cross sections are calculated at LHC energy using the Forward Physics Monte Carlo (FPMC), which allows to obtain realistic predictions for the bottom production with one or two leading intact protons. Moreover, predictions for the the kinematical range probed by the LHCb Collaboration are also presented. Our results indicate that the analysis of the single diffractive events is feasible using the Run I LHCb data.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, 1 table. Version published in Physical Review

    Modeling Two Dimensional Magnetic Domain Patterns

    Two-dimensional magnetic garnets exhibit complex and fascinating magnetic domain structures, like stripes, labyrinths, cells and mixed states of stripes and cells. These patterns do change in a reversible way when the intensity of an externally applied magnetic field is varied. The main objective of this contribution is to present the results of a model that yields a rich pattern structure that closely resembles what is observed experimentally. Our model is a generalized two-dimensional Ising-like spin-one Hamiltonian with long-range interactions, which also incorporates anisotropy and Zeeman terms. The model is studied numerically, by means of Monte Carlo simulations. Changing the model parameters stripes, labyrinth and/or cellular domain structures are generated. For a variety of cases we display the patterns, determine the average size of the domains, the ordering transition temperature, specific heat, magnetic susceptibility and hysteresis cycle. Finally, we examine the reversibility of the pattern evolution under variations of the applied magnetic field. The results we obtain are in good qualitative agreement with experiment.Comment: 8 pages, 12 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.

    Gravitational waves in the generalized Chaplygin gas model

    The consequences of taking the generalized Chaplygin gas as the dark energy constituent of the Universe on the gravitational waves are studied and the spectrum obtained from this model, for the flat case, is analyzed. Besides its importance for the study of the primordial Universe, the gravitational waves represent an additional perspective (besides the CMB temperature and polarization anisotropies) to evaluate the consistence of the different dark energy models and establish better constraints to their parameters. The analysis presented here takes this fact into consideration to open one more perspective of verification of the generalized Chapligin gas model applicability. Nine particular cases are compared: one where no dark energy is present; two that simulate the Λ\Lambda-CDM model; two where the gas acts like the traditional Chaplygin gas; and four where the dark energy is the generalized Chaplygin gas. The different spectra permit to distinguish the Λ\Lambda-CDM and the Chaplygin gas scenarios.Comment: Latex file, 9 pages, 11 figures eps forma

    Quarkonium+γ\gamma production in coherent hadron - hadron interactions at LHC energies

    In this paper we study the H+γH + \gamma (H=J/ΨH = J/\Psi and Υ\Upsilon) production in coherent hadron - hadron interactions at LHC energies. Considering the ultrarelativistic protons as a source of photons, we estimate the γ+pH+γ+X\gamma + p \rightarrow H + \gamma + X cross section using the non-relativistic QCD (NRQCD) factorization formalism and considering different sets of values for the matrix elements. Our results for the total p+pp+H+γ+X p + p \rightarrow p + H + \gamma + X cross sections and rapidity distributions at s=7\sqrt{s} = 7 and 14 TeV demonstrate that the experimental analysis of the J/Ψ+γJ/\Psi + \gamma production at LHC is feasible.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, 1 table.     On the energy dependence of the D^+/D^- production asymmetry

    In this paper we discuss the origin of the asymmetry present in D meson production and its energy dependence. In particular, we have applied the meson cloud model to calculate the asymmetries in D^-/D^+ meson production in high energy p-p collisions and find a good agreement with recent LHCb data.     Marinas as habitats for nearshore fish assemblages: comparative analysis of underwater visual census, baited cameras and fish traps

    Understanding the ecological role that artificial structures might play on nearshore fish assemblages requires the collection of accurate and reliable data through efficient sampling techniques. In this work, differences in the composition and structure of fish assemblages between the inner and outer sides of three marinas located in the temperate northern-eastern Atlantic Ocean were tested using three complementary sampling techniques: underwater visual censuses (UVC), baited cameras (BCs) and fish traps (FTs). UVCs and BCs recorded a comparable number and relative abundance of species, which in turn were much greater than those recorded by FTs. This finding supports the use of UVCs and BCs over FTs for broad ecologically studies, especially when dealing with structurally complex habitats such as artificial structures. We found differences in fish assemblage structure between the inner and outer sides of marinas, independently of the sampling method. Four small-sized species (Similiparma lurida, Thalassoma pavo, Sarpa salpa and Symphodus roissali) associated with structurally complex vegetated habitats dominated, in terms of abundance, the outer sides of marinas; Diplodus vulgaris, Diplodus sargus and Gobius niger, species with high ecological plasticity in habitat requirements, dominated the inner sides of marinas.
