Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia and Hodgkin's Disease: An Unusual Pediatric Association
Autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) is a recognized complication of lymphoproliferative disorders. AIHA associated with Hodgkin's disease (HD) is uncommon especially in the pediatric population. The diagnosis of AIHA is usually associated with HD at the time of initial presentation or during the course of disease, but it could precede it by years to months. In adults the association of AIHA and HD is more frequent in advanced stages and in the nodular sclerosis and mixed cellularity type HD. Warm immune hemolytic anemia is mainly controlled with steroids and chemotherapy. We report a case of a pediatric patient with direct antiglobulin positive test at the diagnosis of a late relapse of stage III B mixed cellularity type HD
Glycome dynamics in T and B cell development: basic immunological mechanisms and clinical applications
Glycans cover the surfaces of all mammalian cells through a process called glycosylation.
Nearly all proteins and receptors that integrate the intricate series of co-stimulatory/inhibitory pathways of the immune system are glycosylated. Growing evidence indicates that the development of the immune system at the origins of T and B cell development is tightly regulated by glycosylation. In this opinion, we hypothesize that the glycome composition of developing T and B cells is developmentally regulated. We discuss how glycans play fundamental roles in lymphocyte development and how glycans early define T and B cell functionality in multiple aspects of adaptive immunity. These advances can provide opportunities for the discovery of novel disease factors and more effective candidate treatments for various conditions. This work was funded by the EU (ERC, GlycanSwitch, Grant Agreement N° 101071386). Twin parenting experience – reshaping the family web
Being a parent of twin siblings is a major challenge for parents and requires a family
restructuring to adapt to a new family environment.
OBJECTIVE. To understand the experiences of parents of twins and meanings attributed
to them.
METHODS: a qualitative study was conducted, having the symbolic interactionism as
a theoretical referential and the interpretative interactionism as the methodological
referential. Twenty-nine parents with children under 4 years participated in this
study. A semi-structured interview was conducted for data collection.
RESULTS. The twins family responses to parenting challenges are conditioned by the
management and articulation of their di*culties, their strengths and personal resources.
There is a clear choice in being a family with children that privileges negotiation
and involvement of the couple in caring for the family, or, at least, part of the
family, meaning the children and playing the parenting role.
CONCLUSIONS. The family grows as a complex web, including its elements and interactions.
The symbolic construction evidences the way the family adjusts to this environment
of twin parenting. The health professionals should be able to anticipate
the needs of families going through this process.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Advances on Bacterial and Fungal Biofilms for the Production of Added-Value Compounds
Simple Summary The production of bio-based materials, including organic acids, antibiotics, enzymes, ethanol, and hydrogen, is generally done by the cultivation of suspended cells rather than using immobilized cells. However, several studies suggest the application of productive biofilms as a reliable alternative for biocatalysis, with many advantages over suspended-growth systems. This review gives an overview of the breakthrough in the application of biofilm platforms for the sustainable production of valuable compounds, with particular insight into the latest advances in the production of recombinant proteins. Productive biofilms are shown to improve production rates and product yields, demonstrating great potential for industrial applications. In recent years, abundant research has been performed on biofilms for the production of compounds with biotechnological and industrial relevance. The use of biofilm platforms has been seen as a compelling approach to producing fine and bulk chemicals such as organic acids, alcohols, and solvents. However, the production of recombinant proteins using this system is still scarce. Biofilm reactors are known to have higher biomass density, operational stability, and potential for long-term operation than suspended cell reactors. In addition, there is an increasing demand to harness industrial and agricultural wastes and biorefinery residues to improve process sustainability and reduce production costs. The synthesis of recombinant proteins and other high-value compounds is mainly achieved using suspended cultures of bacteria, yeasts, and fungi. This review discusses the use of biofilm reactors for the production of recombinant proteins and other added-value compounds using bacteria and fungi
An Efficient Local Search for Partial Latin Square Extension Problem
A partial Latin square (PLS) is a partial assignment of n symbols to an nxn
grid such that, in each row and in each column, each symbol appears at most
once. The partial Latin square extension problem is an NP-hard problem that
asks for a largest extension of a given PLS. In this paper we propose an
efficient local search for this problem. We focus on the local search such that
the neighborhood is defined by (p,q)-swap, i.e., removing exactly p symbols and
then assigning symbols to at most q empty cells. For p in {1,2,3}, our
neighborhood search algorithm finds an improved solution or concludes that no
such solution exists in O(n^{p+1}) time. We also propose a novel swap
operation, Trellis-swap, which is a generalization of (1,q)-swap and
(2,q)-swap. Our Trellis-neighborhood search algorithm takes O(n^{3.5}) time to
do the same thing. Using these neighborhood search algorithms, we design a
prototype iterated local search algorithm and show its effectiveness in
comparison with state-of-the-art optimization solvers such as IBM ILOG CPLEX
and LocalSolver.Comment: 17 pages, 2 figure
Optimal dimensioning model of water distribution systems
This study is aimed at developing a pipe-sizing model for a water distribution system. The optimal solution minimises the system’s total cost, which comprises the hydraulic network capital cost, plus the capitalised cost of pumping energy. The developed model, called Lenhsnet, may also be used for economical design when expanding existing hydraulic networks. The methodology developed includes an iterative dynamic calculation process as well as a hydraulic simulation model. The performance of the method is tested against 4 benchmark examples in the literature. The results obtained show the feasibility of this model, presenting it as a viable alternative for water distribution systems. The method is easily used, once it is performed under EPANET2 software interface

Impacto de um programa de reabilitação na gestão urinária do doente acometido por acidente vascular cerebral
Objective: to assess the effect of a Nursing Rehabilitation program on the urinary incontinence management
of women after a CVA.
Method: quantitative, quasi-experimental, and longitudinal study conducted in a convalescence unit in the
Viana do Castelo district, Portugal, between September 2018 and March 2019. The sample included women
(n=30) aged between 45 and 90, experiencing urinary incontinence after a CVA, assigned to two groups:
experimental group (n=15) and control group (n=15). The functional rehabilitation program was applied to
the experimental group for 4 weeks. The program comprises behavioral changes and an exercise plan to
strengthen pelvic floor muscles, and the impact of urinary incontinence was assessed before and after the
intervention.
Results: a statistically significant correlation was found between the level of functional disability and the
impact of urinary incontinence (r=-0.499; p=0.005). Hence, the level of functional disability influences the
impact of urinary incontinence on quality of life. The functional rehabilitation program implemented in the
experimental group obtained positive results and decreased the frequency (t=6.985, p=0.000) and amount
(Z=-2.762, p=0.006) of urine loss.
Conclusion: the functional rehabilitation program positively impacted and decreased the frequency and
amount of urine loss.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
