Resource recovery and remediation of highly alkaline residues : a political-industrial ecology approach to building a circular economy
Highly alkaline industrial residues (e.g., steel slag, bauxite processing residue (red mud) and ash from coal combustion) have been identified as stocks of potentially valuable metals. Technological change has created demand for metals, such as vanadium and certain rare earth elements, in electronics associated with renewable energy generation and storage. Current raw material and circular economy policy initiatives in the EU and industrial ecology research all promote resource recovery from residues, with research so far primarily from an environmental science perspective. This paper begins to address the deficit of research into the governance of resource recovery from a novel situation where re-use involves extraction of a component from a bulk residue that itself represents a risk to the environment. Taking a political industrial ecology approach, we briefly present emerging techniques for recovery and consider their regulatory implications in the light of potential environmental impacts. The paper draws on EU and UK regulatory framework for these residues along with semi-structured interviews with industry and regulatory bodies. A complex picture emerges of entwined ownerships and responsibilities for residues, with past practice and policy having a lasting impact on current possibilities for resource recovery
Attitude of nurses and predisposition to occurrence of adverse events in intensive care units
Objective: to evaluate the attitudes of nurses towards conditions that may predispose to the occurrence of adverse events in the ICU. Method: exploratory, analytical, descriptive, cross-sectional study with quantitative approach performed in six high complexity ICUs of general and teaching hospitals using a convenience sample of 128 nurses. Results: nearly 48% of participants had low perception of risk factors that could predispose to the occurrence of adverse events. There was a significant difference in the attitude of nurses working in public and philanthropic organizations (
Historical Notes on Psychology in Brazil: The Creation, Growth and Sustenance of Postgraduate Education
AbstractThis article presents a brief overview of the history of psychology in Brazil. It highlights how the Brazilian Association of Research and Postgraduate Studies in Psychology (ANPEPP - Associação Nacional de Pesquisa e Pós-graduação em Psicologia) has fulfilled its mission of fostering discussion on scientific policy and stimulating interchange among researchers. First, it provides a retrospect of ANPEPP meetings, considering both: 1) the thematic working groups, which have served to bring together researchers, and to inspire the emergence of thematic associations and journals; 2) the discussion forums, which have contributed in the critical review of scientific policy, and the mission of postgraduate studies. Second, it focuses on the history of psychology in Brazil, from colonial times to the recent national commitment to postgraduate studies. The paper argues that the plans and strategies led by national funding agencies have been successful and that their results are evidenced by the role played by Brazil in the international arena, both in scientific production and the training of its researchers. By sustaining current policies, it seems certain that, even with the oscillations in the national economy, postgraduate education will grow steadily in its advance of the psychological sciences; and will be working towards a better quality of life, social justice and ecological sustainability
Semi-empirical analysis of Sloan Digital Sky Survey galaxies: II. The bimodality of the galaxy population revisited
We revisit the bimodal distribution of the galaxy population commonly seen in
the local universe. Here we address the bimodality observed in galaxy
properties in terms of spectral synthesis products, such as mean stellar ages
and stellar masses, derived from the application of this powerful method to a
volume-limited sample, with magnitude limit cutoff M_r = -20.5, containing
about 50 thousand luminous galaxies from the SDSS Data Release 2. In addition,
galaxies are classified according to their emission line properties in three
distinct spectral classes: star-forming galaxies, with young stellar
populations; passive galaxies, dominated by old stellar populations; and, hosts
of active nuclei, which comprise a mix of young and old stellar populations. We
show that the extremes of the distribution of some galaxy properties,
essentially galaxy colours, 4000 A break index, and mean stellar ages, are
associated to star-forming galaxies at one side, and passive galaxies at
another. We find that the mean light-weighted stellar age of galaxies is the
direct responsible for the bimodality seen in the galaxy population. The
stellar mass, in this view, has an additional role since most of the
star-forming galaxies present in the local universe are low-mass galaxies. Our
results also give support to the existence of a 'downsizing' in galaxy
formation, where massive galaxies seen nowadays have stellar populations formed
at early times.Comment: 18 pages, 19 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA
Construction and content validation of the scale of predisposition to the occurrence of adverse events
This study aimed to present the results of the construction and content validation of the Scale of Predisposition for the Occurrence of Adverse Events (EPEA). A descriptive research with a qualitative approach was carried out. To study the quality of nursing care and design the scale, we performed a literature review that resulted in a preliminary instrument, composed of 90 items, divided into two dimensions to assess the quality of health care (structure and process). Expert analysis and semantic analysis were applied as techniques to study the content validity of the instrument. The findings indicate that the operational version of the EPEA was composed of 64 items, grouped into two dimensions: structure (18 items) and process (46 items). The EPEA is the first Brazilian measure constructed to assess the nurses’ attitudes towards the factors that may predispose to the occurrence of adverse events in ICU

Percepción de imagem corporal y senso de agencia : notas del experimento de la mano alienÃgena
Body image perception comprises stable and dynamic representational features. Here, we examined whether a stable body image (BI) measure correlates to a dynamic sense of agency (SoA) score. Moreover, we tested whether differential BI perception scores predicts SoA performance under sensory conflict conditions. A total of 21 university students (age M=25.9, SD=9.29) completed the Brazilian version of the Silhouette Figures Scale (SFS) and participated in The Alien Hand Experiment (TAHE). TAHE is a task that manipulates participants’ hand movement SoA. A Bayesian correlation matrix revealed substantial negative correlation probability between BI perception and SoA confidence in accuracy responses, specifically in experimental conditions where agency was manipulated. Based on the SFS scores, participants were divided into groups with and without evidences of BI distortion. Bayesian Independent Samples T-Tests evidenced substantial differential probability between groups. Analyzes confirmed lower SoA confidence among subjects with BI distortion greater than ±3 kg/m².A percepção da imagem corporal compreende caracterÃsticas representacionais estáveis e dinâmicas.
