    Introduction to Holographic Superconductors

These lectures give an introduction to the theory of holographic superconductors. These are superconductors that have a dual gravitational description using gauge/gravity duality. After introducing a suitable gravitational theory, we discuss its properties in various regimes: the probe limit, the effects of backreaction, the zero temperature limit, and the addition of magnetic fields. Using the gauge/gravity dictionary, these properties reproduce many of the standard features of superconductors. Some familiarity with gauge/gravity duality is assumed. A list of open problems is included at the end.Comment: 34 pages, 10 figures, to appear in the proceedings of the 5th Aegean Summer School, "From Gravity to Thermal Gauge Theories: the AdS/CFT Correspondence"; v2: references adde

Optical Density Of Bone Repair After Implantation Of Homogenous Demineralized Dentin Matrix In Diabetic Rabbits

    Get PDF
This research evaluated the bone repair process after implantation of homogenous demineralized dentin matrix (HDDM) in surgical defects in the parietal bone of rabbits with alloxan-induced diabetes, using a polytetrafluorethylene (PTFe) barrier for guided bone regeneration. Thirty-six rabbits were used and divided into four groups: control (C, n = 12), diabetic (D, n = 12, left parietal bone), diabetic with PTFe (DPTFe, same 12 rabbits, right parietal bone), and diabetic with PTFe associated to HDDM (D-PTFe+HDDM, n = 12). Bone defects were created in the parietal bone of the rabbits and the experimental treatments were performed, where applicable. The rabbits were sacrificed after 15, 30, 60 and 90 days. The bone defects were examined radiographically and by optical density (ANOVA and Tukey test, p < .05). The radiographic findings showed that the D-PTFe+HDDM group presented greater radiopacity and better trabecular bone arrangement when compared to that of the C, D and D-PTFe groups. The statistical analysis showed significant differences in the optical density of the newly formed bone among the studied groups. It was possible to conclude that HDDM was biocompatible in diabetic rabbits.223275280Abreu, P.P., Morosolli, A., AraĂșjo, M.M., Carvalho, V.A.P., Gomes, M.F., Effects of autogenous demineralized dentin matrix on dental socket wound healing process in human (2004) Braz Oral Res, 18, p. 52. , SupplCarvalho, V.A.P., Tosello, D.O., Salgado, M.A.C., Gomes, M.F., Histomorphometric analysis of homogenous demineralized dentin matrix as osteopromotive material in rabbit mandibules (2004) Int J Oral Maxillofac Implants, 19 (5), pp. 679-686Gomes, M.F., Anjos, M.J.S., Nogueira, T.O., Catanzaro-GuimarĂŁes, S.A., Autogenous demineralized dentin matrix for tissue engineering applications: Radiographic and histomorphometric studies (2002) Int J Oral Maxillofac Implants, 17 (4), pp. 488-497Gomes, M.F., Silva, M.J.S., Nogueira, T.O., Catanzaro-GuimarĂŁes, S.A., Histologic evaluation of the osteoinductive property of autogenous demineralized dentin matrix on surgical bone defects in rabbit skulls using human amniotic membrane for guided bone regeneration (2001) Int J Oral Maxillofac Implants, 16 (4), pp. 563-571Guyton, A.C., Hall, J.E., (2006) Insulin, Glucagon, and Diabetes mellitus, pp. 827-840. , Guyton AC, Hall JE. The pineapple cultivars (Ananas comosus) Smooth Cayenne, PĂ©rola-da-Paraiba, PĂ©rola-da-Serra and Boituva, were compared. Smooth Cayenne produced significantly heavier fruits with largeat crown at the level of 5%. The penducle length of PĂ©rola-da-Serra local cultivar was longer. Cultivars PĂ©rola-da-Serra, PĂ©rola-da-ParaĂba and Boituva presented longer fruits, averaging 21.83 cm, 21.39 cm and 20.92cm respectively.

Farmer’s evaluation of a rolling canvas prototype against his own system for harvesting olives

    Get PDF
An olive grower was invited to organise a full day harvesting test based on two rolling canvas prototypes, using his own trunk shaker, tractors and labour. This paper reports the results observed, making also a comparison with the usual harvesting method followed by the farmer, based on a trunk shaker and canvas manually placed under the trees. Results show that the rolling canvas based system has got a slightly higher work rate, and according to the workers, is less demanding in terms of physical effort

The Kuiper Belt and Other Debris Disks

We discuss the current knowledge of the Solar system, focusing on bodies in the outer regions, on the information they provide concerning Solar system formation, and on the possible relationships that may exist between our system and the debris disks of other stars. Beyond the domains of the Terrestrial and giant planets, the comets in the Kuiper belt and the Oort cloud preserve some of our most pristine materials. The Kuiper belt, in particular, is a collisional dust source and a scientific bridge to the dusty "debris disks" observed around many nearby main-sequence stars. Study of the Solar system provides a level of detail that we cannot discern in the distant disks while observations of the disks may help to set the Solar system in proper context.Comment: 50 pages, 25 Figures.
