    Dispersive analysis of K_{L mu3} and K_{L e3} scalar and vector form factors using KTeV data

    Using the published KTeV samples of K_L --> pi^{\pm} e^{\mp} nu and K_L --> pi^{\pm} mu^{\mp} nu decays [1], we perform a reanalysis of the scalar and vector form factors based on the dispersive parameterization [2,3]. We obtain phase space integrals I^e_K = 0.15446 \pm 0.00025 and I^{mu}_K = 0.10219 \pm 0.00025. For the scalar form factor parameterization, the only free parameter is the normalized form factor value at the Callan-Treiman point (C); our best fit results in ln C = 0.1915 \pm 0.0122. We also study the sensitivity of C to different parametrizations of the vector form factor. The results for the phase space integrals and C are then used to make tests of the Standard Model. Finally, we compare our results with lattice QCD calculations of F_K/F_pi and f_+(0).Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, to be published in PR

    Different source of commercial vegetable oils may regulate metabolic, inflammatory and redox status in healthy rats.

    Our goal was to carry out a comparative study to evaluate the metabolic and inflammatory effects and the redox status of commercial vegetable oils supplementation [linseed (LO), coconut (VCO), and sunflower (SO)] in metabolically healthy rats. The results found in this study showed that the LO group decreased the HOMA-IR and hepatic cholesterol, and increased the serum levels of IL-6. Supplementation with VCO increased glucose and HOMA-IR, cholesterol concentration and serum triacylglycerol (TAG). In this group, there was also an increase in TBARS. In the SO group there was a decrease in serum concentrations of cholesterol and TAG and an increase in hepatic concentration of these lipids. In addition, in the SO group there was a decrease in hepatic and s?rum concentrations of IL-6 and hepatic levels of TNF, as well as a decrease in the GSH/GSSG ratio, suggesting changes in glutathione metabolism and inflammatory mediators

    Assessment of cognitive status in patients with type 2 diabetes through the mini-mental status examination: a cross-sectional study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Diabetes is considered an independent risk factor for cognitive impairment and some studies observed through neuropsychological tests that cognitive disfunction affects both elderly and younger patients with diabetes. The aims of this study were to evaluate the cognitive status of outpatients with type 2 diabetes and to evaluate factors associated with impaired function.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A cross-sectional study was conducted in a group of type 2 diabetic outpatients. They were asked to undergo the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) during routine ambulatory visits between April 2006 and January 2007, with the highest pontuation of the test being 30 points. Patients were classified as having possible dementia according to years of study. Exclusion criteria were blindness, illiterately, stroke, Alzheimer disease and psychiatric disorder. Results are presented as median (interquartile range) or mean ± SD.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The study group was composed of 346 type 2 diabetic outpatients (216 females), aged 58,6 ± 12,1 years and with duration of diabetes of 12,3 ± 9,1 years. Hypertension was present in 77,2%. The total MMSE score achieved was 26 points (16 - 30) and was correlated with years of study (R<sup>2 </sup>= 0,39, p < 0,001) and 'per capita' income (R<sup>2 </sup>= 0,22, p < 0,0001) and duration of diabetes (R2 = - 0,13, p = 0,01). Patients who needed help to take their medications obtained worst performance in the MMSE (23,16 ± 3,55 <it>vs </it>25,7 ± 2,84, p < 0,01) and were more likely to present possible dementia (p < 0,01). Forty two subjects (12.1%) had diagnosis of possible dementia and this was also associated with years of study (p = 0,045). No association was observed between possible dementia and total MMSE scores with A1C levels.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>We conclude that patients with type 2 diabetes should be regularly evaluated for their cognitive function, because duration of disease could be associated with decline in cognition. The early implementation of mini mental which is a simple method of execution can be done to detect early stages of dementia. This test could be an important tool to access the ability of patient to understand their disease and treatment.</p

    Efeito do extrato aquoso da Hyptis pectinata na regeneração hepática após hepatectomia parcial em ratos

    Objetivo: Este estudo foi realizado com o objetivo de verificar o efeito do extrato aquoso da Hyptis pectinata na regeneração hepática bem como nos níveis das enzimas séricas (AST, ALT e γ-GT) após hepatectomia parcial de 67% em ratos. Métodos: AST, ALT e γ-GT, foram determinadas pelo método cinético utilizando um espectrofotômetro (Modelo E2250- CELM). A regeneração hepática foi avaliada por imunohistoquímica (PCNA). Resultados: O pré-tratamento oral de 100 mg/ kg foi realizado durante 4 dias e causou aumento na regeneração hepática O pré-tratamento oral com 200 mg/kg diminuiu significativamente os níveis de AST quando comparado com o grupo submetido ao pré-tratamento com água destilada. As demais enzimas avaliadas não apresentaram diferenças quando comparadas entre os grupos estudados. Conclusão: O presente estudo mostra que o extrato aquoso da Hyptis pectinata, numa concentração de 100 mg/kg possui alguma atividade biológica estimulando a regeneração hepática e causando também um leve efeito hepatoprotetor numa concentração de 200 mg/kg. _________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT: Purpose: This study was carried out to assess the effects of the aqueous extract of Hyptis pectinata leaves on liver regeneration and on serum enzymes (AST, ALT and γ-GT) after 67% partial hepatectomy in rats. Methods: AST, ALT and γ-GT, were determined by conventional procedures using a spectrophotometer (Model E2250-CELM). Liver regeneration was evaluated by immunohistochemical staining for proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA). Results:Oral pretreatment during 4 days at 100 mg/kg increased liver regeneration index. At 200 mg/kg, AST level was statistically decreased in comparison to the group submited to distilled water administration. The other enzymes assessed disclosed no difference when all groups were compared. Conclusion: The present study shows that the aqueous extract of Hyptis pectinata leaves contains some biological active principles that stimulate liver regeneration at 100 mg/kg and cause slight hepatic protection at 200 mg/kg

    Photobiomodulation reduces the cytokine storm syndrome associated with Covid-19 in the zebrafish model

    Although the exact mechanism of the pathogenesis of COVID-19 is not fully understood, oxidative stress and the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines have been highlighted as playing a vital role in the pathogenesis of the disease. In this sense, alternative treatments are needed to reduce the inflammation caused by COVID-19. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the potential effect of red PBM as an attractive therapy to downregulate the cytokine storm caused by COVID-19 from a zebrafish model. RT-PCR analyses and protein-protein interaction prediction among SARS-CoV-2 and Danio rerio proteins showed that rSpike was responsible for generating systemic inflammatory processes with significantly increased pro-inflammatory (il1b, il6, tnfa, and nfkbiab), oxidative stress (romo1) and energy metabolism (slc2a1a, coa1) mRNA markers, with a pattern like those observed in COVID-19 cases in humans. On the other hand, PBM treatment decreased the mRNA levels of these pro-inflammatory and oxidative stress markers compared with rSpike in various tissues, promoting an anti-inflammatory response. Conversely, PBM promotes cellular and tissue repair of injured tissues and significantly increases the survival rate of rSpike-inoculated individuals. Additionally, metabolomics analysis showed that the most impacted metabolic pathways between PBM and the rSpike-treated groups were related to steroid metabolism, immune system, and lipids metabolism. Together, our findings suggest that the inflammatory process is an incisive feature of COVID-19, and red PBM can be used as a novel therapeutic agent for COVID-19 by regulating the inflammatory response. Nevertheless, the need for more clinical trials remains, and there is a significant gap to overcome before clinical trials.publishedVersio
