Artificial Intelligence empowerment in managerial decision-making
Artificial intelligence (AI) is one of the most interesting topics to be studied and developed and fascinating in terms of the different applications and usages. The aim of this research work was to understand the relationship of AI in manage-rial decision-making. Hence, the theory developed was focused on the growth of the rela-tionship between technology and management, specifically in decision-making, noticing the evolution of information systems (IS) to artificial intelligence directed to strategical, tactical, and operational decision-making. This line of thought was followed to understand if the usage of technology and AI was conditioned by firms’ characteristics, in terms of being small, medium, and big firms. The research focused also in analyse the potential of AI and/or technologies in firms, more precisely, understand the changes on organizations due to the alterations provided by AI and technology. Also, understand the impact of AI in managers, in terms of cooperation if it was in the ideal weight to work and build success, and if they had suggestions to upgrade or implement AI within their firms. The sample was composed by administrates and CEOs of small, medium, and big firms, that were sub-mitted to an interview. The results of the content of analysis of the interviews reinforce the ideas exposed in the literature review, showing that the use of AI was most used in big firms, with higher conditions to invest on it, rather than in medium and small firms, that use IS combined with human rationality. With the help of chaos theory, it was perceived that the firms pre-sented in the research do not implement AI/technologies in their processes as an attempt of solve problems but to understand if their usage would bring valuable benefits to them. Additionally, it was observed that the firms were not owning knowledge of the potential-ities of the vast existence of tools with AI to apply in several areas but know that it builds success. Finally, there were quested the impacts of technologies and AI in the workers within firms, demonstrating that most of them offer resistance when implementing AI and technologies, feeling threatened but ends with the acceptance of it by seeing the better, quickly, and accurate results presented by it. The quested people mentioned that most of them fear the unknown, but it does not stop them from growing and working in the pro-cess of implement and know it, being aware of the increase its applications in the world
Unveiling the production of metabolites with flavor enhancement through genome-scale metabolic modelling of a lambic beer microbial community
Dissertação de mestrado em BioinformaticsSystems biology studies biological processes on a global scale, involving different omics. It
uses bioinformatic approaches, such as the reconstruction of genome-scale metabolic models to
understand the biological system of a cell, organism, or microbial community. Genome-scale
metabolic models are metabolic models based on the well-known stoichiometry of biochemical
reactions. It offers a whole system view, predicting the metabolic phenotype, based on the
genome and biochemical information. These models haves several applications in different
areas such as biotechnological and pharmaceutical.
Lambic beers are commercial beers from Belgium that still use old brewing styles. This
type of beer is gaining interest worldwide due to its unique flavour profile obtained by a
mixed yeast-bacteria culture fermentation. Therefore, in this thesis, the lactic acid bacterium
Pediococcus damnosus and Brettanomyces bruxellensis yeast, which play an important role in the
acidification and maturation phase of the lambic beer fermentation, will be studied. Pediococcus
damnosus is a gram-positive bacterium belonging to the lactic acid bacteria group commonly
found in brewery environments. Pediococcus damnosus produces only lactate by the sugar
metabolism, which confers an acidic and tart flavour to the beer. In turn, Brettanomyces
bruxellensis is a facultatively anaerobic yeast, also responsible for the typical aroma of lambic
beer. It uses several carbon sources and produces several volatile phenolic compounds not
desired in common fermentations crucial in this type of beer.
Usually, in nature, the microorganisms appear in communities. Thus, the study of microbial
communities is essential to understand their development, interaction and evolution. The main
aim of this thesis is to unveil the production of metabolites with flavour enhancement in the
acid lambic beer through the reconstruction and simulation of genome-scale metabolic models
for each microorganism and therefore for the microbial community composed by them, to
understand the interactions between the species and how these affects the lambic beer flavour.
Two genome-scale metabolic models were reconstructed: the model of the bacterium Pediococcus
damnosus and the model of the yeast Brettanomyces bruxellensis. The tool used for
model reconstruction was merlin, which automates several reconstruction processes and having
a user-friendly interface. The Pediococcus damnosus genome-scale metabolic model consists
of 809 reactions and 589 metabolites. In turn, the Brettanomyces bruxellensis genome-scale
metabolic model has 2095 reactions and 1249 metabolites. In the simulations performances, the
genome-scale metabolic models showed the ability to grow in the minimal medium provided,
as described in the literature. Furthermore, simulations predicted the production of certain
compounds, such as butanediol in the bacterium Pediococcus damnosus and 4-ethylphenol in the
yeast B. bruxellensis, which may influence the Lambic beer flavour. Interactions between the
genome-scale metabolic models, especially amino acid exchanges, were predicted. The model of the Pediococcus damnosus-Brettanomyces bruxellensis community was assembled using ReFramed.
The community model’s simulation results show that the interaction of these microorganisms
results in the production of compounds that may flavour and thus be responsible for the unique
flavour profile of Lambic beer.
e leveduras. Nesta tese serão estudadas a bactéria ácida láctica Pediococcus damnosus e a
A bactéria
The factory events: business plan for the creation of a company in the United Kingdom
The events planning market in the United Kingdom (UK) is somehow a vague and complex
one, presenting itself, in general terms, as one of the economic growth triggers as it is one of
the sectors that contributes the most to job creation in the country. However, in which
concerns the private events sector, namely children birthday parties and other personal
celebrations, although the players are growing both nationally and regionally, there is a gap to
fill in the market, namely in Nottingham, which constitutes an opportunity.
This newly found opportunity in a market that has grown so much in countries like Portugal is
in the segment of the customised events market, planned according to the clients’ requests and
budget, under a pre-defined theme from which the decorative items, generally handmade, and
the so-called sweet table design are created to match. And if in Portugal the supply for this
kind of service has grown exponentially, although the economic recession context, it is
believed that there is even more market potential to explore in some British regions, a country
with a solid economy and relatively high purchasing power.
The present business plan resumes the process of creating an events planning company in the
UK that aims to fill that existing gap in the market, with an initial investment of only £7000.
For that purpose, the general economic environment was analysed in detail, as well as the
local specificities, such as a local market research to understand the competition and to
understand the potential local demand. Finally, the financial plan proved the business’
viability and the possibility of a quick return on the investmentO mercado de planeamento de eventos no Reino Unido é um mercado vasto e complexo,
mesa - o chamado sweet table design.
The determinants of length of stay in the Azores : a count model approach
This paper employs count data models to estimate the determinants of length of stay, as count data models naturally lend themselves to overcome the censoring and truncation data issues associated with the non-negative, integer nature of length of stay. This paper employs a rich micro data set gathered through questionnaires ministered to a representative sample of tourists departing from the Azores: the fastest growing touristic region in Portugal. It is found that sociodemographic profiles, such as nationality and Azorean ascendancy, and trip attributes, such as repeat visitation rates and type of flight, are important determinants of length of stay. In addition, it is found that destination image and attitudes regarding environmental initiatives, constructed from a factor analysis exercise, also influence length of stay. In particular, the results suggest that marketing strategies that promote the Azores for its nature, landscape, remoteness, weather and safety may increase length of stay, whereas cultural heritage has the opposite effect.N/
Road to Microservices
This document intends to elucidate the complexity of microservices decomposition and this its inherent process of implementation. Developments in technology and design, achieving higher performance, reliability, or lowering costs are valid reasons to consider controlling the product’s quality by guaranteeing its conformance with established characteristics and standards. Control is made possible by adding quality control, inspection routines, and trend analysis to a manufacturing process. These techniques are established in the Quality field academically and business-wise. Repeat Part Management (RPM) is software that allows users to apply these techniques efficiently and has brought value to the company. However, RPM has been growing, and issues have emerged due to customer needs - accumulated technical debt. These ever-growing modifications are common through different business areas, and architectures’ research evolution has accompanied them. This demand for highly modifiable, rapid development, and independent systems has resulted in the adoption of microservices. There is a concern for existing systems for decomposition due to the characteristics of microservices, which encourages approach/technique research. This architecture promotes legacy system analysis to map current functionalities and dependencies between components. Furthermore, critical concepts in a microservices architecture are researched and implemented in a new system that encompasses Repeat Part Management’s functionalities. This thesis explores the microservices’ architecture evolution with an already defined mature domain in quality assessment.
Technological policies for education and digital literacy: the governmental program ‘e.escolinha’
announced the initiative ’e.escolinha’
which included the distribution of computers
‘Magalhães’ to students of the 1st
cycle of basic education for three consecutive
school years. Currently suspended,
the programme was a flagship of the
XVII Constitutional Government, led by
José Sócrates, but it was also subject of
controversy from the opposition parties
and from the school community, especially
due to the apparent emphasis on access
to technology rather than a greater
concern with the training and pedagogical
practices. Under the Technological
Plan for Education, the ’e.escolinha’ initiative
was part of a broader policy for
the development of a competitive and dynamic
economy, responding to the goals
set by the EU in the Lisbon Strategy
2000. The initiative was presented
to the country with ambitious goals
regarding the expected changes to teachers’
pedagogical practices, the process
of children’s learning and school success
in general. However, the most visible
face of the policy, although it may comprise
other nuances, may have been reduced
to the question of access, investing
little in other dimensions of digital literacy.
Based on interviews with key actors
involved in the conception and implementation
of the ’e.escolinha’ initiative,
and on official programme documents,
this paper intends to discuss how
policy makers and companies set out and
evaluate the objectives of this initiative.
It is intended, in particular, to understand
if they share the idea that this governmental
measure follows a technological
drift or if they discern any digital
literacy objectives in it. This piece

Based on data from national and international statistical reports, we try to reflect on the trends about news uses in the daily lives of young people, in recent years, and how current practices contribute to an increase of civic participation. In the three studies analyzed (Pew Research Center (2012), Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism (2013) and Marktest (2012), respectively), it was observed that there has been a decline in the interest of news in general and an increase in the preference for media content located between the sphere of information and entertainment, at the expense of political affairs. Reflecting upon news uses by young people, some authors argue that the infotainment or soft news could jeopardize the future of journalism and democracy (Mindich, 2005; Barbur & Goodnow, 2011; Barnhurst & Wartella, 1998; Currah and Franklin, cit in Nguyen, 2012; Baumgartner & Morris, 2006; among others), while others advocate a positive impact on the survival of the media and training of young citizens (Barnet, Schudson and Brewer & Marquardt cit in Nguyen, 2012; Armstrong, 2005; among others). Despite the controversial debate, it is stated that the path to citizenship resides on the development of critical skills about information and the ability of young citizens to express their interests and ideologies making use of the potentialities of new media (Dahlgreen, 2011; Buckingham, 2000). This article is part of the PhD Scholarship "The (dis)interest of young people in actuality: study on the role of the media in information about the world" (SFRH/BD/94791/2013) funded by FCT, QREN and POPH.(undefined
New garment proposal for prevention of spreading Gram-negative bacteria resistant to carbapenem antibiotic class under hospital settings
Sensitive skin diseases, including atopic dermatitis, skin inflammation and bedsores,
leave patients vulnerable under hospital setting. It is important for the development
of a hospital gown with ‘‘soft hand’’ properties and at the same time as a protector
against nosocomial infections. Klebsiella pneumoniae has developed resistance to
antibiotics in the carbapenem antibiotic class, known as carbapenem-resistant
K. pneumoniae (CRKP). CRKP is resistant to nearly all antibiotics and can kill up to
50% of infected patients.
This work consisted in the development of a washable recycled silk fibroin-based
gown covalently linked with an amino acid L-Cysteine(L-Cys), focused on prevention of
K. pneumoniae establishment, proliferation and spreading to community, for use under
hospital settings. With the growing problem of resistance to antibiotics and few new
therapies on the horizon, gowns adsorbed with L-Cys show to function as a barrier to
the establishment and proliferation of microorganisms, providing user protection from
infectious disease. This gown was knitted at a rectilinear needle loom with a Jersey knit structure. Then it was cross-linked with L-Cys, subjected to laundry, and subsequently
characterized by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared
spectroscopy, contact angle, free energy of adhesion, scanning electron microscopy
and transmission electron microscopy. Results presented a bactericidal effect against
K. pneumoniae of 94.92% after three rinses and 88.88% after five washing cycles, with the
few adhered bacteria with an altered and compromised morphology.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
“Seeing but not believing”: Undergraduate students’ media uses and news trust
Young people often encounter the news on social media while engaging in social and entertainment practices. Despite relying on social media for news, youth see online information with suspicion and as less trustworthy than traditional news media. While many factors contribute to the widespread decline in news trust, the relationship between youth news media uses and their trust in the news remains unclear. This article seeks to understand how Portuguese undergraduate students describe their news trust, and how these perceptions relate to their media uses. We draw on a mixed-methods study using a survey (N = 562) and focus groups (N = 45) with students from diverse disciplines, between 2016 and 2017. The findings reveal a paradoxical relationship between students’ media uses and news trust. Students mistrust online news but stay informed through social media. This is explained by emotional needs as well as perceptions of the news combining optimistic and critical stances. This study suggests further research on what news trust means for young people on social media. This article is the result of a PhD fellowship (SFRH/BD/94791/2013), funded by the Foundation for Science
