Evaluation of magnetic helicity in homogeneous turbulence
A technique for the measurement of magnetic helicity from values of the two point magnetic field correlation matrix under the assumption of spatial homogeneity is presented. Knowledge of a single scalar function of space, derivable from the correlation matrix, suffices to determine the magnetic helicity. The technique is illustrated by reporting the first measurement of the magnetic helicity of the solar wind
Vortex-type elastic structured media and dynamic shielding
The paper addresses a novel model of metamaterial structure. A system of
spinners has been embedded into a two-dimensional periodic lattice system. The
equations of motion of spinners are used to derive the expression for the
chiral term in the equations describing the dynamics of the lattice. Dispersion
of elastic waves is shown to possess innovative filtering and polarization
properties induced by the vortextype nature of the structured media. The
related homogenised effective behavior is obtained analytically and it has been
implemented to build a shielding cloak around an obstacle. Analytical work is
accompanied by numerical illustrations.Comment: 24 pages, 13 figure
Single-channel digital command-detection system
System, fabricated of highly-reliable digital logic elements, operates on binary pulse-code-modulated signals and derives internal synchronization from data signal. All-digital implementation of detector develops synchronization from data signal by computer cross-correlation of command modulation signal with its expected forms in sequence and adjusts detector phases in accordance with correlation peaks
The turbulent generation of outward traveling Alfvenic fluctuations in the solar wind
From an analysis of the incompressible MHD equations, it is concluded that the frequent observation of outward propagating Alfvenic fluctuations in the solar wind can arise from early stages of in situ turbulent evolution, and need not reflect coronal processes
Large amplitude MHD waves upstream of the Jovian bow shock
Observations of large amplitude magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) waves upstream of Jupiter's bow shock are analyzed. The waves are found to be right circularly polarized in the solar wind frame which suggests that they are propagating in the fast magnetosonic mode. A complete spectral and minimum variance eigenvalue analysis of the data was performed. The power spectrum of the magnetic fluctuations contains several peaks. The fluctuations at 2.3 mHz have a direction of minimum variance along the direction of the average magnetic field. The direction of minimum variance of these fluctuations lies at approximately 40 deg. to the magnetic field and is parallel to the radial direction. We argue that these fluctuations are waves excited by protons reflected off the Jovian bow shock. The inferred speed of the reflected protons is about two times the solar wind speed in the plasma rest frame. A linear instability analysis is presented which suggests an explanation for many of the observed features of the observations
Celestial mechanics in Kerr spacetime
The dynamical parameters conventionally used to specify the orbit of a test
particle in Kerr spacetime are the energy , the axial component of the
angular momentum, , and Carter's constant . These parameters are
obtained by solving the Hamilton-Jacobi equation for the dynamical problem of
geodesic motion. Employing the action-angle variable formalism, on the other
hand, yields a different set of constants of motion, namely, the fundamental
frequencies , and associated with
the radial, polar and azimuthal components of orbital motion. These
frequencies, naturally, determine the time scales of orbital motion and,
furthermore, the instantaneous gravitational wave spectrum in the adiabatic
approximation. In this article, it is shown that the fundamental frequencies
are geometric invariants and explicit formulas in terms of quadratures are
derived. The numerical evaluation of these formulas in the case of a rapidly
rotating black hole illustrates the behaviour of the fundamental frequencies as
orbital parameters such as the semi-latus rectum , the eccentricity or
the inclination parameter are varied. The limiting cases of
circular, equatorial and Keplerian motion are investigated as well and it is
shown that known results are recovered from the general formulas.Comment: 25 pages (LaTeX), 5 figures, submitted to Class. Quantum Gra
Method and apparatus for a single channel digital communications system
A method and apparatus are described for synchronizing a received PCM communications signal without requiring a separate synchronizing channel. The technique provides digital correlation of the received signal with a reference signal, first with its unmodulated subcarrier and then with a bit sync code modulated subcarrier, where the code sequence length is equal in duration to each data bit
Dark states of dressed Bose-Einstein condensates
We combine the ideas of dressed Bose-Einstein condensates, where an
intracavity optical field allows one to design coupled, multicomponent
condensates, and of dark states of quantum systems, to generate a full quantum
entanglement between two matter waves and two optical waves. While the matter
waves are macroscopically populated, the two optical modes share a single
photon. As such, this system offers a way to influence the behaviour of a
macroscopic quantum system via a microscopic ``knob''.Comment: 6 pages, no figur
