Observation of a uniform temperature dependence in the electrical resistance across the structural phase transition in thin film vanadium oxide (VO2VO_{2})

An electrical study of thin VO2VO_{2} films in the vicinity of the structural phase transition at 680C68^{0}C shows (a) that the electrical resistance RR follows log(R)log (R) \propto T-T over the TT-range, 20<T<800C20 < T < 80 ^{0}C covering both sides of the structural transition, and (b) a history dependent hysteresis loop in RR upon thermal cycling. These features are attributed here to transport through a granular network.Comment: 3 pages, 3 color figure

Long Memory and Volatility Clustering: is the empirical evidence consistent across stock markets?

Long memory and volatility clustering are two stylized facts frequently related to financial markets. Traditionally, these phenomena have been studied based on conditionally heteroscedastic models like ARCH, GARCH, IGARCH and FIGARCH, inter alia. One advantage of these models is their ability to capture nonlinear dynamics. Another interesting manner to study the volatility phenomena is by using measures based on the concept of entropy. In this paper we investigate the long memory and volatility clustering for the SP 500, NASDAQ 100 and Stoxx 50 indexes in order to compare the US and European Markets. Additionally, we compare the results from conditionally heteroscedastic models with those from the entropy measures. In the latter, we examine Shannon entropy, Renyi entropy and Tsallis entropy. The results corroborate the previous evidence of nonlinear dynamics in the time series considered.Comment: 8 pages; 2 figures; paper presented in APFA 6 conferenc

Genetic screening for mutants with altered seminal root numbers in hexaploid wheat using a high-throughput root phenotyping platform

Roots are the main channel for water and nutrient uptake in plants. Optimization of root architecture provides a viable strategy to improve nutrient and water uptake efficiency and maintain crop productivity under water-limiting and nutrient-poor conditions. We know little, however, about the genetic control of root development in wheat, a crop supplying 20% of global calorie and protein intake. To improve our understanding of the genetic control of seminal root development in wheat, we conducted a high-throughput screen for variation in seminal root number using an exome-sequenced mutant population derived from the hexaploid wheat cultivar Cadenza. The screen identified seven independent mutants with homozygous and stably altered seminal root number phenotypes. One mutant, Cadenza0900, displays a recessive extra seminal root number phenotype, while six mutants (Cadenza0062, Cadenza0369, Cadenza0393, Cadenza0465, Cadenza0818 and Cadenza1273) show lower seminal root number phenotypes most likely originating from defects in the formation and activation of seminal root primordia. Segregation analysis in F2 populations suggest that the phenotype of Cadenza0900 is controlled by multiple loci whereas the Cadenza0062 phenotype fits a 3:1 mutant:wild-type segregation ratio characteristic of dominant single gene action. This work highlights the potential to use the sequenced wheat mutant population as a forward genetic resource to uncover novel variation in agronomic traits, such as seminal root architecture

Magnetic-film atom chip with 10 μ\mum period lattices of microtraps for quantum information science with Rydberg atoms

We describe the fabrication and construction of a setup for creating lattices of magnetic microtraps for ultracold atoms on an atom chip. The lattice is defined by lithographic patterning of a permanent magnetic film. Patterned magnetic-film atom chips enable a large variety of trapping geometries over a wide range of length scales. We demonstrate an atom chip with a lattice constant of 10 μ\mum, suitable for experiments in quantum information science employing the interaction between atoms in highly-excited Rydberg energy levels. The active trapping region contains lattice regions with square and hexagonal symmetry, with the two regions joined at an interface. A structure of macroscopic wires, cut out of a silver foil, was mounted under the atom chip in order to load ultracold 87^{87}Rb atoms into the microtraps. We demonstrate loading of atoms into the square and hexagonal lattice sections simultaneously and show resolved imaging of individual lattice sites. Magnetic-film lattices on atom chips provide a versatile platform for experiments with ultracold atoms, in particular for quantum information science and quantum simulation.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figure
