Assessment of application, effectiveness, and compliance of forestry best management practices in West Virginia

The application, effectiveness, and compliance of forestry best management practices (BMPs) were assessed based on 116 randomly selected sites harvested between November 2003 and March 2004 in West Virginia. Landowners were contacted to gain permission for site visits according to the random list. The landowners were also asked a series of questions to identify their knowledge and satisfaction about the harvest and BMPs. A series of eight checklists were used to assess 26 BMPs on haul roads, skid trails, landings, and in streamside management zones (SMZs). Thirty three out of 116 sites with SMZs were further evaluated for BMP applications and effectiveness. Spatial data, soil, and stream type were also collected from the site to identify how these spatial attributes affect BMP application, effectiveness, and compliance. Data collected were also analyzed statistically to examine the differences of BMP application, effectiveness, and compliance among forester involvement, ownership type, and Forest Districts. Results indicated that compliance on haul roads was 80%, skid trails (70%), landings (78%), and SMZs (61%). Statewide compliance generally increased from the previous study to 72%

A Study to Determine Whether Oral Delivery Style, in Presenting Poetry to Students, Significantly Effects the Level of Responsiveness to the Poetry

Concerns about the lack of intrinsic motivation among students has been associated with behaviorism\u27s emphasis on extrinsic rewards and with a general societal trend toward materialism. Teachers frequently comment that many students seem to have little interest in learning. This research examined one factor in student motivation, lesson delivery style. Four 7th grade classes, two different classes from two different schools, were used, resulting in 69 subjects. Poetry was read to classes with either an aesthetic or a bland delivery style. The behavioral response of the students was noted as to whether or not they were indicative of physiological arousal. The students\u27 written responses were rated in the domains of composition and style and the subdomains of vividness of language, voice and tone using the Virginia Literacy Passport Test (LPT) scoring procedures. Background information obtained included student sixth grade scores on the Composition and Style Domains of the LPT Writing test, scores on the Bett\u27s Questionnaire of Mental Imagery (QMI), scores on the Affective Orientation (AO) Scale, gender, and school of attendance. The data was analyzed using factor analysis, canonical correlation and multiple regressions. Relationships were found between AO and performance on the subdomains, which may have been modified by lesson delivery style. QMI was found to be related to performance on the composition and style domains. Lesson delivery style was related to the behavioral response of students and both were related to only one writing postmeasure, a negative relationship to vividness of language

Compliance Analysis of Forestry Best Management Practices in West Virginia

A total of 29 forestry best management practices (BMPs) were measured on 116 randomly selected sites harvested between November 2003 and March 2004 in West Virginia using four checklists on haul roads, skid trails, landings, and in streamside management zones (SMZs). Landowners were contacted to gain permission for site visits according to the random list. Data collected were analyzed statistically to examine the significant differences of BMP compliance rates among forester involvement, ownership, harvest method, and forest district. Results indicate that BMP compliance was generally better when a forester was involved with the harvest or on industry lands. Forester involvement, ownership, and harvest method did not significantly affect most of BMP compliance rates. BMP compliance on skid trails, at landings, and overall compliance by site differed significantly among six forest districts in West Virginia

View within the entry pavilion; In 1965, the museum moved to a new Wilshire Boulevard complex as an independent, art-focused institution, the largest new museum to be built in the United States after the National Gallery of Art. The museum was built in a style similar to Lincoln Center and consisted of three buildings: the Ahmanson Building, the Bing Center, and the Lytton Gallery (renamed the Frances and Armand Hammer Building in 1968). The board selected LA architect William Pereira over the directors' recommendation of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe for the buildings. The museum hired the architectural firm of Hardy, Holzman, Pfeiffer Associates to design its Robert O. Anderson Building, which opened in 1986 (renamed the Art of the Americas Building in 2007). The museum's Pavilion for Japanese Art, designed by maverick architect Bruce Goff, opened in 1988. In 1994, LACMA purchased the adjacent May Department Stores building, an impressive example of streamline moderne architecture designed by Albert C. Martin Sr. LACMA West increased the museum's size by 30 percent when the building opened in 1998. In 2004, LACMA’s Board of Trustees unanimously approved plans to transform the museum, led by architect Renzo Piano. The transformation consists of three phases. Phase I started in 2004 and was completed in February 2008. Phase III is scheduled to be completed toward the end of 2010.
