    A memória coletiva como geradora do projeto de arquitetura paisagista

    Este estudo surge na sequência de um pedido da Câmara Municipal de Viana do Alentejo para se elaborar um projeto para o Rossio do Poço Novo, em Alcáçovas, uma freguesia deste concelho, que se situa no sul de Portugal. Este é um lugar repleto de história e de património e cujos registos históricos remontam ao século VIII. Pretende apresentar-se um estudo de caso em que o projeto de Arquitetura Paisagista é, concomitantemente, uma intervenção no espaço exterior e um gerador da memória coletiva, explanando­ se a forma como estes dois aspetos podem ser simbióticos. Por último, apresentar-se-ão um artigo científico relacionado com o conceito do projeto, elaborado no seguimento deste processo, e uma reflexão crítica sobre os resultados obtidos tanto no projeto como no referido artigo. - ABSTRACT: This study appeared following a request from the Municipality of Viana do Alentejo in order to prepare a Landscape Architecture Project for Rossio do Poço Novo, in Alcáçovas, a civil parish which lies in southern Portugal. lt is a place abounding in history and heritage, whose historical records date back from the eighth century. With this paper, we intend to present a case study in which the Landscape Architecture design is both an action in the outer space and a collective memory generator, explaining how these two aspects can be symbiotic. Lastly we will show a scientific paper related to the concept of the project and that was prepared by us following this process, as well as reflection on the results achieved both with the paper and with the project

    Effectiveness of habitat management in the recovery of low-density populations of wild rabbit.

    Understanding the relationship between spatial patterns of landscape attributes and population presence and abundance is essential for understanding population processes as well as supporting management and conservation strategies. This study evaluates the influence of three factors: environment, habitat management, and season on the presence and abundance of the wild rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus), an important prey species for Mediterranean endangered predator species. To address this issue, we estimated wild rabbit presence and abundance by latrine counting in transects located in 45 plots within a 250×250 m grid from June 2007 until June 2009 in a 1,200 ha hunting area in southern Portugal.We then analyzed how wild rabbit presence and abundance correlatewith the aforementioned factors. Our results showed that the main variable influencing wild rabbit presence and abundance was the distance to the artificial warrens. North and northeast slope directions were negatively related to wild rabbit presence. Conversely, rabbit presence was positively correlated with short distances to ecotone, artificial warrens, and spring. Regarding rabbit abundance, in addition to artificial warrens, soft soils, bushes, and season also had a positive effect. We found that environmental variables, management practices, and season each affect wild rabbit presence and abundance differently at a home range scale in low-density population. Thus, our major recommendations are reducing the distance to artificial warrens and ecotone, ideally to less than 100 m, and promoting habitat quality improvement on slopes with plenty of sun exposure

    Predicting Microhabitat Suitability for an Endangered Small Mammal Using Sentinel-2 Data

    Accurate mapping is a main challenge for endangered small-sized terrestrial species. Freely available spatio-temporal data at high resolution from multispectral satellite offer excellent opportunities for improving predictive distribution models of such species based on fine-scale habitat features, thus making it easier to achieve comprehensive biodiversity conservation goals. However, there are still few examples showing the utility of remote-sensing-based products in mapping microhabitat suitability for small species of conservation concern. Here, we address this issue using Sentinel-2 sensor-derived habitat variables, used in combination with more commonly used explanatory variables (e.g., topography), to predict the distribution of the endangered Cabrera vole (Microtus cabrerae) in agrosilvopastorial systems. Based on vole surveys conducted in two different seasons over a ~176,000 ha landscape in Southern Portugal, we assessed the significance of each predictor in explaining Cabrera vole occurrence using the Boruta algorithm, a novel Random forest variant for dealing with high dimensionality of explanatory variables. Overall, results showed a strong contribution of Sentinel-2-derived variables for predicting microhabitat suitability of Cabrera voles. In particular, we found that photosynthetic activity (NDI45), specific spectral signal (SWIR1), and landscape heterogeneity (Rao’s Q) were good proxies of Cabrera voles’ microhabitat, mostly during temporally greener and wetter conditions. In addition to remote-sensing-based variables, the presence of road verges was also an important driver of voles’ distribution, highlighting their potential role as refuges and/or corridors. Overall, our study supports the use of remote-sensing data to predict microhabitat suitability for endangered small-sized species in marginal areas that potentially hold most of the biodiversity found in human-dominated landscapes. We believe our approach can be widely applied to other species, for which detailed habitat mapping over large spatial extents is difficult to obtain using traditional descriptors. This would certainly contribute to improving conservation planning, thereby contributing to global conservation efforts in landscapes that are managed for multiple purposes

    Use of Swine Manure in Agriculture in Southern Brazil: Fertility or Potential Contamination?

    A major challenge in agricultural production systems is the maximization of resources used to promote the development of crops with a minimum of environmental impact. In this sense, the use of fertilizers of animal origin has great potential to promote the improvement of soil properties. In southern Brazil, swine manure (SM) is widely used in agricultural areas, allowing nutrient cycling within pig units and reducing costs for chemical fertilizers. Much of this manure is applied in liquid form (PS), but other strategies are often used, such as PS compost and swine bedding (DL). The use of these SMs improves the chemical, biological, and physical attributes of the soil, contributing to increased fertility and productivity of crops. However, prolonged use or applications with high doses of SM can result in the accumulation of metals and phosphorus in soils, representing a risk of contamination of soils and surface water resources, mainly due to losses by runoff, and subsurface, by leaching. Therefore, the adoption of criteria and the rational use of PMs need to be adopted to avoid dangerous effects on the environment, such as plant toxicity and water contamination. The potentialities and risks of SM applications are discussed in this chapter

    Prevalence of oral mucosal lesions in a brazilian military police population

    Background: Data obtained from oral health surveys are very important for identifying disease-susceptible groups and for developing dental care and prevention programs. So, the purpose of the current article was to investigate the prevalence of oral mucosa lesions (OMLs) in a population of Brazilian police. Material and Methods: Interviews and oral cavity examinations were performed on a sample of 395 police officers who were randomly selected by the calibrated researcher. The number of individuals was obtained by a sample calculation using the finite population correction. The diagnostic criteria were based on the WHO (1997) criteria and adapted to Brazilian surveys. Results: In total, 8.61% of the population presented some OML. Traumatic injuries and benign migratory glossitis (BMG) were the most prevalent lesions. Conclusions: The prevalence of potentially malignant disorders was lower than among the Brazilian population. The most prevalent lesion among the police officers was related to trauma. Patients dissatisfied with oral health had a higher risk of presenting OMLs

    Helicobacter pylori colonization of the adenotonsillar tissue : fact or fiction?

    Objective: The transmission of the gastric pathogen Helicobacter pylori involves the oral route. Molecular techniques have allowed the detection of H. pylori DNA in samples of the oral cavity, although culture of H. pylori from these type of samples has been sporadic. Studies have tried to demonstrate the presence of H. pylori in adenotonsillar tissue, with contradictory results. Our aim was to clarify whether the adenotonsillar tissue may constitute an extra gastric reservoir for H. pylori. Methods: Sixty-two children proposed for adenoidectomy or tonsillectomy were enrolled. A total of 101 surgical specimens, 55 adenoid and 46 tonsils, were obtained. Patients were characterized for the presence of anti-H. pylori antibodies by serology. On each surgical sample rapid urease test, immunohistochemistry, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) with a peptide nucleic acid probe for H. pylori, and polymerase chain reaction–DNA hybridization assay (PCR–DEIA) directed to the vacA gene of H. pylori were performed. Results: Thirty-nine percent of the individuals had anti-H. pylori antibodies. Rapid urease test was positive in samples of three patients, all with positive serology. Immunohistochemistry was positive in samples of two patients, all with negative serology. All rapid urease test or immunohistochemistry positive cases were negative by FISH. All samples tested were negative when PCR–DEIA for H. pylori detection was used directly in adenotonsillar specimens. Conclusions: The adenotonsillar tissue does not constitute an extra gastric reservoir for H. pylori infection, at least a permanent one, in this population of children.     O Livro Verde dos Montados apresenta diversos objectivos que se interligam: Em primeiro lugar, o Livro Verde pretende reunir e sistematizar, de uma forma simples e acessível ao público, o conhecimento produzido em Portugal pelos investigadores e técnicos de várias instituições de investigação ou de gestão que estudam o Montado. Assume-se como uma oportunidade de caracterizar o sistema tendo em conta as suas várias dimensões, identificando as principais ameaças à sua preservação assim como os caminhos que podem ajudar à sua sustentabilidade. Não sendo um documento científico, baseia-se no conhecimento científico e pretende constituir a base para uma plataforma de organização, tanto dos investigadores como do conhecimento científico actualmente produzido em Portugal sobre o Montado.Em segundo lugar, o Livro Verde deverá contribuir para um entendimento partilhado do que é o Montado, por parte do público, de técnicos e de especialistas, conduzindo a uma classificação mais clara do que pode ser considerado Montado e de quais os tipos distintos de Montados que podem ser identificados. Em terceiro lugar, o Livro Verde estabelece as bases para uma estratégia coordenada de disponibilização de informação sobre o sistema Montado, visando o seu conhecimento, apreciação e valorização pela sociedade portuguesa no seu conjunto. Deste modo, o Livro Verde poderá constituir um instrumento congregador e inspirador para a realização de acções de sensibilização e informação sobre o Montado. Em quarto lugar, pretende-se que o Livro Verde contribua para um maior reconhecimento e valorização do Montado como sistema, a nível do desenho das políticas nacionais por parte dos vários sectores envolvidos.Finalmente, o Livro Verde constituirá um documento parceiro do Livro Verde das Dehesas, produzido em Espanha em 2010, de forma a reforçar o reconhecimento e a devida valorização destes sistemas silvo-pastoris no desenho das estratégias e políticas relevantes pelas instituições europeias. Em suma, os autores pretendem que o Livro Verde dos Montados se afirme como o primeiro passo para uma efectiva definição e implementação de uma estratégia nacional para os Montados
