Geometric optimal control of the contrast imaging problem in Nuclear Magnetic Resonance
The objective of this article is to introduce the tools to analyze the
contrast imaging problem in Nuclear Magnetic Resonance. Optimal trajectories
can be selected among extremal solutions of the Pontryagin Maximum Principle
applied to this Mayer type optimal problem. Such trajectories are associated to
the question of extremizing the transfer time. Hence the optimal problem is
reduced to the analysis of the Hamiltonian dynamics related to singular
extremals and their optimality status. This is illustrated by using the
examples of cerebrospinal fluid / water and grey / white matter of cerebrum.Comment: 30 pages, 13 figur
Capturing the essence of grounded theory: the importance of understanding commonalities and variants
This paper aims to capture the essence of grounded theory (GT) by setting out its commonalities and variants and, importantly, the implications of the latter for the implementation of the former, and for the truth claims and the contributions to knowledge that a GT study might make. Firstly, three ontological and epistemological variants of GT are outlined. Secondly, the commonalities of GT are set out as
eight core elements of GT methodology that are individually necessary, but only sufficient collectively, to define a GT study. These elements are: an iterative process; theoretical sampling; theoretical sensitivity; codes, memos and concepts; constant comparison; theoretical saturation; fit, work, relevance and modifiability; and substantive theory. Thirdly, the implications of the ontological and epistemological variants of GT for, firstly, the implementation of the core common elements of the methodology and, secondly, the truth claims and contributions to knowledge that might be made, are discussed. Finally, the paper concludes by arguing that published GT studies in sport, exercise and health research have not always explicitly demonstrated a full understand of the commonalities and variants of GT, and that researchers publishing GT studies must take responsibility for doing this
Tube Width Fluctuations in F-Actin Solutions
We determine the statistics of the local tube width in F-actin solutions,
beyond the usually reported mean value. Our experimental observations are
explained by a segment fluid theory based on the binary collision approximation
(BCA). In this systematic generalization of the standard mean-field approach
effective polymer segments interact via a potential representing the
topological constraints. The analytically predicted universal tube width
distribution with a stretched tail is in good agreement with the data.Comment: Final version, 5 pages, 4 figure
Restorative Justice-Informed Moral Acquaintance: Resolving the Dual Role Problem in Correctional and Forensic Practice
The issue of dual roles within forensic and correctional fields has typically been conceptualized as dissonance—experienced by practitioners— when attempting to adhere to the conflicting ethical requirements associated with client well-being and community protection. In this paper, we argue that the dual role problem should be conceptualized more broadly; to incorporate the relationship between the offender and their victim. We also propose that Restorative Justice (RJ) is able to provide a preliminary ethical framework to deal with this common ethical oversight. Furthermore, we unite the RJ framework with that of Ward’s (2013) moral acquaintance model to provide a more powerful approach—RJ informed moral acquaintance—aimed at addressing the ethical challenges faced by practitioners within forensic and correctional roles
Computer simulations of two-dimensional melting with dipole-dipole interactions
We perform molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo simulations of two-dimensional
melting with dipole-dipole interactions. Both static and dynamic behaviors are
examined. In the isotropic liquid phase, the bond orientational correlation
length 6 and susceptibility 6 are measured, and the data are fitted to the
theoretical ansatz. An algebraic decay is detected for both spatial and
temporal bond orientational correlation functions in an intermediate
temperature regime, and it provides an explicit evidence for the existence of
the hexatic phase. From the finite-size scaling analysis of the global bond
orientational order parameter, the disclination unbinding temperature Ti is
estimated. In addition, from dynamic Monte Carlo simulations of the positional
order parameter, we extract the critical exponents at the dislocation unbinding
temperature Tm. All the results are in agreement with those from experiments
and support the Kosterlitz-Thouless-Halperin-Nelson-Young (KTHNY) theory.Comment: 23 pages, 12figure
Promoting survival: A grounded theory study of consequences of modern health practices in Ouramanat region of Iranian Kurdistan
The aim of this qualitative study is to explore the way people using modern health care perceive its consequences in Ouraman-e-Takht region of Iranian Kurdistan. Ouraman-e-Takht is a rural, highly mountainous and dry region located in the southwest Kurdistan province of Iran. Recently, modern health practices have been introduced to the region. The purpose of this study was to investigate, from the Ouramains' point of view, the impact that modern health services and practices have had on the Ouraman traditional way of life. Interview data from respondents were analyzed by using grounded theory. Promoting survival was the core category that explained the impact that modern health practices have had on the Ouraman region. The people of Ouraman interpreted modern health practices as increasing their quality of life and promoting their survival. Results are organized around this core category in a paradigm model consisting of conditions, interactions, and consequences. This model can be used to understand the impact of change from the introduction of modern health on a traditional society
Assessment of the benefits of user involvement in health research from the Warwick Diabetes Care Research User Group : a qualitative case study

To assess the benefits of involving health-care users in diabetes research. Design and participants 
For this qualitative case study, semi-structured interviews were conducted with researchers who had worked extensively with the group. During regular meetings of the Research User Group, members discussed their views of the group's effectiveness as part of the meeting's agenda. Interviews and discussions were transcribed, coded using N-Vivo software and analysed using constant comparative methods. Results 
Involvement of users in research was generally seen as contributing to effective and meaningful research. However, the group should not be considered to be representative of the patient population or participants of future trials. An important contributor to the group's success was its longstanding nature, enabling users to gain more insight into research and form constructive working relationships with researchers. The user-led nature of the group asserted itself, especially, in the language used during group meetings. A partial shift of power from researchers to users was generally acknowledged. Users' main contribution was their practical expertise in living with diabetes, but their involvement also helped researchers to remain connected to the `real world' in which research would be applied. While the group's work fulfilled established principles of consumer involvement in research, important contributions relying on personal interaction between users and researchers were hard to evaluate by process measures alone. Conclusions 
We demonstrated the feasibility, acceptability and effectiveness of this longstanding, experienced, lay-led research advisory group. Its impact on research stems from the continuing interaction between researchers and users, and the general ethos of learning from each other in an on-going process. Both process measures and qualitative interviews with stakeholders are needed to evaluate the contributions of service users to health research
Maximising transparency in a doctoral thesis: The complexities of writing about the use of QSR*NVIVO within a grounded theory study
This paper discusses the challenges of how to provide a transparent account of the use of the software programme QSR*NVIVO (QSR 2000) within a Grounded Theory framework (Glaser and Strauss 1967; Strauss and Corbin 1998). Psychology students are increasingly pursuing qualitative research projects such to the extent that the UK Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) advise that students should have skill in the use of computer assisted qualitative data analysis software (CAQDAS) (Economic and Social Research Council 2001). Unlike quantitative studies, rigid formulae do not exist for writing-up qualitative projects for doctoral theses. Most authors, however, agree that transparency is essential when communicating the findings of qualitative research. Sparkes (2001) recommends that evaluative criteria for qualitative research should be commensurable with the aims, objectives, and epistemological assumptions of the research project. Likewise, the use of CAQDAS should vary according to the research methodology followed, and thus researchers should include a discussion of how CAQDAS was used. This paper describes how the evolving process of coding data, writing memos, categorising, and theorising were integrated into the written thesis. The structure of the written document is described including considerations about restructuring and the difficulties of writing about an iterative process within a linear document
Lane-formation vs. cluster-formation in two dimensional square-shoulder systems: A genetic algorithm approach
Introducing genetic algorithms as a reliable and efficient tool to find
ordered equilibrium structures, we predict minimum energy configurations of the
square shoulder system for different values of corona width . Varying
systematically the pressure for different values of we obtain
complete sequences of minimum energy configurations which provide a deeper
understanding of the system's strategies to arrange particles in an
energetically optimized fashion, leading to the competing self-assembly
