    The Leeds Winter Warmth Campaign: Stakeholder Evaluation

    The winter of 2012/13 was longer and colder than usual; whilst temperatures were average in December, it was colder than usual from January through to May. March was the coldest it has been for 50 years (Met Office, 2013). This evaluation focuses on the organisations funded by the Winter Warmth campaign to deliver services to Leeds residents. The overriding aim of the evaluation was to inform the operation of possible future schemes, with good practices and any issues identified. The views of organisations on the need for the funds and how the campaign was organised were ascertained. How they delivered the services, reached clients and worked with other stakeholders is explored and their suggestions for improvements described. This report should be read alongside the overall campaign report, by Leeds City Council, and the beneficiary report

    En este trabajo expongo la replicación de base de datos, como un método para obtener mayor seguridad y disponibilidad de los datos almacenados en las distintas bases de datos Postgres. Como objetivo de este trabajo, demuestro que utilizar replicación en bases de datos, logra una mayor disponibilidad de los datos. Esto queda demostrado por medio de sistemas operativos (Linux) instalados en máquinas virtuales, los cuales cuentan con la configuración que se investiga según el tema que se desarrolla. Este tipo de tecnología beneficia a los administradores de bases de datos, a los propietarios de la información y a los usuarios finales, dado que esto permite a los administradores de bases de datos, manejar las bases de datos de una manera más segura, a los propietarios de la información de que garantizan la integridad de sus datos, dado que evita pérdidas de información y que los usuarios de la misma cuentan con los datos cada vez que lo necesitan, aun cuando existen fallas en los servidores de bases de datos.     Fresh, pseudotachylyte-bearing mantle peridotites from the lawsonite eclogite-facies san petrone unit, alpine corsica

    Mantle peridotites exhumed in mountain belts provide important insights on the composition and evolution of the upper mantle, and additionally inform on metamorphic, geochemical, and tectonic processes-including seismic activity-at convergent margins. In this contribution, we present field, microstruc-tural, and mineralogical data of fresh, pseudotachylyte-bearing mantle peridotites from the lawsonite eclogite-facies San Petrone unit, Alpine Corsica, France. The present case study represents the first example of subducted fresh peridotite associated with fresh lawsonite eclogite-facies assemblages. Two bodies of fresh peridotite are embedded in fully serpentinized ultramafic rocks forming the substratum of a subducted ocean-continent transition of the Piemonte-Liguria Basin. Clinopyroxene and spinel mineral chemistry indicates that the investigated peridotite samples were part of a refertilized mantle and, therefore, the San Petrone unit likely belonged to the more distal part of the ocean-continent transition. Because small bodies of fresh peridotite embedded in fully serpentinized rocks can hardly be identified by means of geophysical investigations, this finding suggests that small, yet disseminated bodies of fresh mantle peridotite can potentially be more abundant than previously supposed at ocean-continent transition and, potentially, at mid-ocean ridges and in subduction zones. The preservation of fresh mantle peridotite bodies in subducting slabs is also discussed with respect to its potential implications on intermediate depth seismicity and geochemical cycling-including production of natural energy sources-from rifting to subduction

    Predictive relation for the α-relaxation time of a coarse-grained polymer melt under steady shear

    We examine the influence of steady shear on structural relaxation in a simulated coarse-grained unentangled polymer melt over a wide range of temperature and shear rates. Shear is found to progressively suppress the α-relaxation process observed in the intermediate scattering function, leading ultimately to a purely inertially dominated β-relaxation at high shear rates, a trend similar to increasing temperature. On the basis of a scaling argument emphasizing dynamic heterogeneity in cooled liquids and its alteration under material deformation, we deduce and validate a parameter-free scaling relation for both the structural relaxation time τα from the intermediate scattering function and the “stretching exponent” β quantifying the extent of dynamic heterogeneity over the entire range of temperatures and shear rates that we can simulate

    Cardiocirculatory intraoperative assessment during single-shot caudal anaesthesia in children: comparison between levobupivacaine and ropivacaine

    BACKGROUND: Caudal block with levobupivacaine or ropivacaine is the most commonly used regional anaesthesia in children. METHODS: The aim of study was to compare the cardiocirculatory profile induced in two matched groups of young patients, submitted to caudal anaesthesia with levobupivacaine or ropivacaine for an elective subumbilical surgery. Sixty children were enrolled: thirty received levopubivacaine 0.25% and thirty ropivacaine 0.2%. Intraoperative heart rate (HR), systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP) were monitored at following times: Ta0 (after anaesthesia induction), Tal (after caudal anaesthesia), Ta2 (five minutes later), Ta3 (ten minutes later), Ts1 (at surgical incision), Ts2, Ts3, Ts4, Ts5 (every 10 minutes during surgery), Taw (at the awakening). RESULTS: In both groups the cardiocirculatory trend remained within normal ranges at all times considered, demonstrating the safety of the method with both drugs. Both groups showed a similar trend at the different monitoring times: low decrease in HR, SBP and DBP after caudal block, slight increase in parameters after skin incision, slight decrease during surgery, increase at awakening. Regarding SBP and DBP, the levobupivacaine group children generally showed higher levels compared to the ropivacaine group, especially for DBP. CONCLUSIONS: Paediatric caudal anaesthesia is an effective method with an very infrequent complication rate. Possible hypotheses for differing haemodynamic behaviour could include a stronger vasoconstriction reflex of innervated areas during caudal anaesthesia with levobupivacaine and a lower levobupivacaine induced block of the sympathetic fibers, related to different pharmacokinetic profile of low concentrations of the local anaesthetics used in paediatric epidural space

    Feedback between high-pressure genesis of abiotic methane and strain localization in subducted carbonate rocks

    AbstractFluid-rock interactions exert key control over rock rheology and strain localization. Redox may significantly affect the reaction pathways and, thereby, the mechanical properties of the rock. This effect may become critical in volatile-rich, redox sensitive rocks such as carbonate-rich lithologies, the breakdown of which can significantly modify the net volume change of fluid-mediated reactions. Subduction focus the largest recycling of crustal carbonates and the most intense seismic activity on Earth. Nevertheless, the feedbacks between deep carbon mobilization and deformation remain poorly investigated. We present quantitative microstructural results from natural samples and thermodynamic modeling indicating that percolation of reducing fluids exerts strong control on the mobilization of carbon and on strain localization in subducted carbonate rocks. Fluid-mediated carbonate reduction progressed from discrete domains unaffected by ductile deformation into localized shear zones deforming via diffusion creep, dissolution-precipitation creep and grain boundary sliding. Grain-size reduction and creep cavitation along localized shear zones enhanced fluid-carbonate interactions and fluid channelization. These results indicate that reduction of carbonate rocks can exert an important positive feedback on strain localization and fluid channelization, with potential implications on seismic activity and transport of deep hydrocarbon-bearing fluids.</jats:p
