Motivated by Money: Students With Academic Scholarships Versus Those Without and Their Emotional Intelligence
The purpose of this study was to determine the retention rate of students who had received academic scholarships versus students who had not received academic scholarships but met the qualifications to receive the scholarships and the effects of emotional intelligence on these students. The data collection mechanisms for this study included the student information system at The University of Southern Mississippi and the EQi: Short survey administered to students during the orientation week activities at The University of Southern Mississippi prior to the beginning of the fall 2004 semester. There were 667 students who participated in the EQi: Short survey during the orientation week activities in fall 2004, of those students, 213 students met the qualifications to receive the scholarship and had partaken in the EQi: Short survey. The students were monitored over an 8 semester time frame with 196 students\u27 race being Caucasian and 11 students being African American. Based on all of the students in the study, 71% persisted by either graduating from the institution or still being enrolled after the 8l semester; compared to 29% of students who were no longer enrolled at the institution and did not earn a degree. Based on EQi sub scores of student who persist, stress management had the highest mean of 101.15, while general mood had a mean score of 99.46.
In this study, various statistical tests were conducted to determine persistence including Chi Square, t-test, and logistic regression. In the study, there were significant differences between the persistence of students who did earn a scholarship and those students who qualified for the scholarship but did not receive it. Students who earned a scholarship persisted at a greater rate than students who did not persist. There was also a significant difference between the persistence of females who receive the scholarship versus males who received the scholarship, with females persisting at a higher rate compared to male students. Students\u27 GPA in the spring 2007 showed a significant difference between students who had the scholarship and those students who did not have the scholarship. Significance was not found in the persistence of students who received a Pell Grant compared to students who did not receive a Pell Grant; nor was significance detected based on the race of the student being either African American or Caucasian.
Recommendations for further research would include expanding the study to include multitude of cohorts and students at The University of Southern Mississippi and expanding the study to institutions in the southeastern United States. A qualitative study could be conducted on students who did not persist to discover their reasons for leaving the institution, as well as a qualitative study being conducted on students who chose to persist at the institution and their reasons for continuing their studies

Reforming the Veterans Health Administration-Beyond Palliation of Symptoms
The Veterans Health Administration (VHA) is one of the largest health care delivery systems in the United States, with 9.1 million enrollees, 20,000 physicians, 1600 facilities, 288,000 employees, and a $59 billion budget. In response to highly publicized concerns regarding delayed access to care, preventable deaths in patients awaiting care, and falsification of lists to make waiting times appear shorter, Congress passed and President Barack Obama signed the Veterans Access, Choice, and Accountability Act of 2014. In addition to expanding non-VHA treatment options for veterans, this law requires a comprehensive, independent assessment of 12 areas of VHA care delivery and management (see box). Eleven assessments were
conducted under the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Alliance to Modernize Healthcare, operated by the MITRE Corporation; the assessment of one area, “Access Standards,” was conducted by the Institute of Medicine. An independent blue-ribbon panel of experts was formed to examine and advise on all aspects of data collection and review, best practices, assessments, and recommendations. That panel, which we chaired, unanimously endorsed an integrated report, which was delivered to Secretary of Veterans Affairs Robert McDonald and Congress on September 1, 2015, and publicly released on September 18.

Automation in the simulation of processes with Aspen HYSYS: An academic approach
Aspen HYSYS is a typical tool used in some Master in Chemical Engineering courses at the University of Castilla-La Mancha like “Analysis and Optimization of Chemical Processes” and “Dynamic of Process: Regulation of Chemical Plants.” Automation is the process of linking commercial software to third-parties applications built in EXCEL-Visual Basic for Applications. The capability of automation as a powerful tool for simulating unprecedented complex processes suggests that it could be a relevant background complement to the classical one offered by a university. In this sense, a seminar about automation based on the study of two cases: a refrigeration process and a production one taken from literature, has been proposed at the University of Castilla-La Mancha. The analysis of the survey performed for the subject evaluation resulted to be very positive. Students consider the methodology of the course and the potentiality of automation for developing their research and professional skills appropriately. However, more examples are required to better understand the automation concept and its potential application to other situations. Finally, they declare that the concept of automation requires a lot of expertise and deep knowledge of programming and the correct application of numerical methods for solving complex problem
Catalysts Supported on Carbon Materials for the Selective Hydrogenation of Citral
The heterogeneously catalyzed selective-hydrogenation of citral is one of the more feasible ways for obtaining its appreciated unsaturated-alcohols, nerol and geraniol, which are present in over 250 essential oils. Thus, citral has very recently come to be produced petro-chemically in very large quantities, and so partial hydrogenation of citral has become a very economical route for the production of these compounds. However, the selective hydrogenation of citral is not easy, because citral is an α,β-unsaturated aldehyde which possesses three double bonds that can be hydrogenated: an isolated C=C bond and the conjugated C=O and C=C bonds. For this reason, in catalyst selection there are several important issues which affect the product selectivity, for example, the active metal and metal particle size which are factors related to the catalyst preparation method, catalyst precursor, or support surface area, as well as other factors such as porosity, the addition of a second catalytic metal, and, of course, the type of catalyst support. About this last one, carbon materials are very interesting supports for this type of hydrogenation reaction due to their unique chemical and textural properties. This review collects and analyzes the results obtained in the selective hydrogenation of citral catalyzed by carbon material supported metals. This work is supported by the MICINN-FEDER, project CTM2010-18889
Improvement of the NOx selectivity for a planar YSZ sensor
International audienceIn recent years planar yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) based electrochemical gas sensors for automotive exhaust applications have become a major source of interest. The present work aims to develop a sensor for industrialisation. For this reason planar YSZ-based electrochemical sensors using two metallic electrodes (platinum and gold) were fabricated using screen-printing technology and tested in a laboratory test bench for different concentrations of pollutant gas such as CO, NO, NO2 and hydrocarbons in oxygen rich atmosphere. It was furthermore shown that the selectivity towards NOx could be highly reinforced by deposing a catalytic filter consisting of 1.7-4.5 wt.% Pt dispersed on alumina directly on the sensing elements. This filter was characterized by the use of SEM, TPD and XRD
