6,520 patients with symptoms attributed to toxoplasmosis were evaluated for the prevalence of IgG anti-Toxoplasma gondii, employing the indirect immunofluorescence test. 51.27% of the evaluated proved to be positive. 60.85% of the patients with ocular disorders were seropositive to IgG anti-T.gondii; followed by 56.25% and 48.10% from those with general and gynecobstetric disorders. The symptoms and manifestations which showed the greatest positivity percentages were: asthenia, chorioretinitis, menstrual disorders, cephaleas and uveitis.Se evaluaron 6.520 pacientes con síntomas atribuíbles a toxoplasmosis por la presencia de anticuerpos IgG anti - Toxoplasma gondii mediante la técnica de inmunofluorescencia indirecta. Gender‐Informed Mentoring Strategies for Women Engineering Scholars: On Establishing a Caring Community

Improved mentoring of women graduate students and young faculty is one strategy for increasing the presence, retention and advancement of women scholars in engineering. We explore the sociological literature on interpersonally‐ and institutionally‐generated gender roles and dynamics that make the construction and maintenance of mentoring relationships especially difficult for women in male‐dominated fields. In addition, we review non‐traditional strategies including peer‐, multiple‐ and collective mentorships that are likely to be more successful for most women (and many men). Finally, organizational change strategies designed to provide a more egalitarian and cooperative atmosphere in engineering programs and departments are presented. These ideas represent a social contract for a caring community more supportive of all members' personal and professional growth and success.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/95139/1/j.2168-9830.2002.tb00672.x.pd

SEROPREVALENCIA DE Toxoplasma gondii EN Felis catus EN LA HABANA

Toxoplasma gondii is a protozoan with a wide range of intermediate and definitive (felines) hosts and causal agent of toxoplasmosis, re-emergent zoonosis of worldwide distribution. The seroprevalence in humans in Cuba is high but the prevalence in the domestic cat in the capital city is unknown. The present study aimed to determine the seroprevalence of T. gondii in Felis catus in Havana, Cuba. A total of 300 serum samples from domestic cats were collected from 15 municipalities from October 2010 until April 2011. Samples were analysed by an ELISA Inhibition assay. Municipalities were grouped in a Central and in a Peripheral zone. The seroprevalence was 70%, without significant differences between zones and municipalities. The results allowed concluding that the seroprevalence of T. gondii in domestic cats in Havana was high, which constitutes a potential risk of infection for all hosts, including humans.

In the framework of the investigation Seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii and associated risk factors in Feliscatus in Havana, this causal agent of toxoplasmosis, a re-emergent and cosmopolitan zoonosis that affects mammal and birds as intermediate hosts and felines as definitive hosts, was approached. In Cuba, a high seroprevalence of T. gondii in humans was reported in the capital; however, to date, the prevalence in the feline species (Felis catus) in Havana is unknown, mainly due to the absence of diagnosticians on the veterinary network and the complexity in sampling. For the above arguments, it was decided to determine the seroprevalence of T. gondii and to identify the risk factors associated with the presence of anti-T. gondii antibodies in Felis catus

Joey Velez-Ginorio is pursuing a bachelor\u27s degree in Computer Engineering with a minor in Mathematics. He has involved himself with several volunteer organizations across his undergraduate career: Limbitless Solutions, I.D.E.A.S., AAP Ambassadors, and the Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Native Americans and Hispanics in Science. His current research focus is in Computational Cognitive Science & Artificial Intelligence, where he seeks to build computational models for different features of human cognition - in an effort to build better A.I. With this, Joey plans to matriculate into academia, where he can pursue these ideas in the long term.https://stars.library.ucf.edu/mcnair_gallery/1004/thumbnail.jp

Temporal Order-Based First-Take-All Hashing For Fast Attention-Deficit-Hyperactive-Disorder Detection

    No full text
Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common childhood disorders and can continue through adolescence and adulthood. Although the root cause of the problem still remains unknown, recent advancements in brain imaging technology reveal there exists differences between neural activities of Typically Developing Children (TDC) and ADHD subjects. Inspired by this, we propose a novel First-Take-All (FTA) hashing framework to investigate the problem of fast ADHD subjects detection through the fMRI time-series of neuron activities. By hashing time courses from regions of interests (ROIs) in the brain into fixed-size hash codes, FTA can compactly encode the temporal order differences between the neural activity patterns that are key to distinguish TDC and ADHD subjects. Such patterns can be directly learned via minimizing the training loss incurred by the generated FTA codes. By conducting similarity search on the resultant FTA codes, data-driven ADHD detection can be achieved in an efficient fashion. The experiments\u27 results on real-world ADHD detection benchmarks demonstrate the FTA can outperform the state-of the-art baselines using only neural activity time series without any phenotypic information
