Integrated structure/control law design by multilevel optimization
A new approach to integrated structure/control law design based on multilevel optimization is presented. This new approach is applicable to aircraft and spacecraft and allows for the independent design of the structure and control law. Integration of the designs is achieved through use of an upper level coordination problem formulation within the multilevel optimization framework. The method requires the use of structure and control law design sensitivity information. A general multilevel structure/control law design problem formulation is given, and the use of Linear Quadratic Gaussian (LQG) control law design and design sensitivity methods within the formulation is illustrated. Results of three simple integrated structure/control law design examples are presented. These results show the capability of structure and control law design tradeoffs to improve controlled system performance within the multilevel approach
The Origin of Sequential Chromospheric Brightenings
Sequential chromospheric brightenings (SCBs) are often observed in the
immediate vicinity of erupting flares and are associated with coronal mass
ejections. Since their initial discovery in 2005, there have been several
subsequent investigations of SCBs. These studies have used differing detection
and analysis techniques, making it difficult to compare results between
studies. This work employs the automated detection algorithm of Kirk et al.
(Solar Phys. 283, 97, 2013) to extract the physical characteristics of SCBs in
11 flares of varying size and intensity. We demonstrate that the magnetic
substructure within the SCB appears to have a significantly smaller area than
the corresponding H-alpha emission. We conclude that SCBs originate in the
lower corona around 0.1 R_sun above the photosphere, propagate away from the
flare center at speeds of 35 - 85 km/s, and have peak photosphere magnetic
intensities of 148 +/- 2.9 G. In light of these measurements, we infer SCBs to
be distinctive chromospheric signatures of erupting coronal mass ejections.Comment: 25 pages, 9 figures, 5 table
A method of evaluating efficiency during space-suited work in a neutral buoyancy environment
The purpose was to investigate efficiency as related to the work transmission and the metabolic cost of various extravehicular activity (EVA) tasks during simulated microgravity (whole body water immersion) using three space suits. Two new prototype space station suits, AX-5 and MKIII, are pressurized at 57.2 kPa and were tested concurrently with the operationally used 29.6 kPa shuttle suit. Four male astronauts were asked to perform a fatigue trial on four upper extremity exercises during which metabolic rate and work output were measured and efficiency was calculated in each suit. The activities were selected to simulate actual EVA tasks. The test article was an underwater dynamometry system to which the astronauts were secured by foot restraints. All metabolic data was acquired, calculated, and stored using a computerized indirect calorimetry system connected to the suit ventilation/gas supply control console. During the efficiency testing, steady state metabolic rate could be evaluated as well as work transmitted to the dynamometer. Mechanical efficiency could then be calculated for each astronaut in each suit performing each movement
Quantitative Decoding of Interactions in Tunable Nanomagnet Arrays Using First Order Reversal Curves
To develop a full understanding of interactions in nanomagnet arrays is a
persistent challenge, critically impacting their technological acceptance. This
paper reports the experimental, numerical and analytical investigation of
interactions in arrays of Co nanoellipses using the first-order reversal curve
(FORC) technique. A mean-field analysis has revealed the physical mechanisms
giving rise to all of the observed features: a shift of the non-interacting
FORC-ridge at the low-H end off the local coercivity H axis; a stretch
of the FORC-ridge at the high-H end without shifting it off the H axis;
and a formation of a tilted edge connected to the ridge at the low-H end.
Changing from flat to Gaussian coercivity distribution produces a negative
feature, bends the ridge, and broadens the edge. Finally, nearest neighbor
interactions segment the FORC-ridge. These results demonstrate that the FORC
approach provides a comprehensive framework to qualitatively and quantitatively
decode interactions in nanomagnet arrays.Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures. 9 page supplemental material including 3 figure
Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) Acoustical Resonance Technical Assessment Report
A request was submitted on September 2, 2004 concerning the uncertainties regarding the acoustic environment within the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) cavity, and the potential for structural damage from acoustical resonance or tones, especially if they occur at or near a structural mode. The requestor asked for an independent expert opinion on the approach taken by the SOFIA project to determine if the project's analysis, structural design and proposed approach to flight test were sound and conservative. The findings from this assessment are recorded in this document
The Nolan House
As a precedent, The Green Team analyzed the history of glass architecture, literature, and culture. Based on our research, we found that glass is often depicted as breakable, delicate, and a way to expose or display aspects that would otherwise be hidden. We challenged ourselves to incorporate safety and privacy into our glass house as a way to combat the pre-existing notions of glass in architecture
Integrating user-centred design in the development of a silent speech interface based on permanent magnetic articulography
Abstract: A new wearable silent speech interface (SSI) based on Permanent Magnetic Articulography (PMA) was developed with the involvement of end users in the design process. Hence, desirable features such as appearance, port-ability, ease of use and light weight were integrated into the prototype. The aim of this paper is to address the challenges faced and the design considerations addressed during the development. Evaluation on both hardware and speech recognition performances are presented here. The new prototype shows a com-parable performance with its predecessor in terms of speech recognition accuracy (i.e. ~95% of word accuracy and ~75% of sequence accuracy), but significantly improved appearance, portability and hardware features in terms of min-iaturization and cost
Narratives as a Fundamental Component of Consciousness
In this paper, we propose a conceptual architecture that models human (spatially-temporally-modally) cohesive narrative development using a computer representation of quale properties. Qualia are proposed to be the fundamental "cognitive" components humans use to generate cohesive narratives. The engineering approach is based on cognitively inspired technologies and incorporates the novel concept of quale representation for computation of primitive cognitive components of narrative. The ultimate objective of this research is to develop an architecture that emulates the human ability to generate cohesive narratives with incomplete or perturbated information
Visions, Values, and Videos: Revisiting Envisionings in Service of UbiComp Design for the Home
UbiComp has been envisioned to bring about a future dominated by calm
computing technologies making our everyday lives ever more convenient. Yet the
same vision has also attracted criticism for encouraging a solitary and passive
lifestyle. The aim of this paper is to explore and elaborate these tensions
further by examining the human values surrounding future domestic UbiComp
solutions. Drawing on envisioning and contravisioning, we probe members of the
public (N=28) through the presentation and focus group discussion of two
contrasting animated video scenarios, where one is inspired by "calm" and the
other by "engaging" visions of future UbiComp technology. By analysing the
reasoning of our participants, we identify and elaborate a number of relevant
values involved in balancing the two perspectives. In conclusion, we articulate
practically applicable takeaways in the form of a set of key design questions
and challenges.Comment: DIS'20, July 6-10, 2020, Eindhoven, Netherland
