Compassion motivations: Distinguishing submissive compassion from genuine compassion and its association with shame, submissive behavior, depression, anxiety and stress
Abstract Recent research has suggested that being compassionate and helpful to others is linked to well-being. However, people can pursue compassionate motives for different reasons, one of which may be to be liked or valued. Evolutionary theory suggests this form of helping may be related to submissive appeasing behavior and therefore could be negatively associated with well-being. To explore this possibility we developed a new scale called the submissive compassion scale and compared it to other established submissive and shame-based scales, along with measures of depression, anxiety and stress in a group of 192 students. As predicted, a submissive form of compassion (being caring in order to be liked) was associated with submissive behavior, shame-based caring, ego-goals and depression, anxiety, and stress. In contrast, compassionate goals and compassion for others were not. As research on compassion develops, new ways of understanding the complex and mixed motivations that can lie behind compassion are required. The desire to be helpful, kind, and compassionate, when it arises from fears of rejection and desires for acceptance, needs to be explored.N/
The SPLASH Survey: Kinematics of Andromeda's Inner Spheroid
The combination of large size, high stellar density, high metallicity, and
Sersic surface brightness profile of the spheroidal component of the Andromeda
galaxy (M31) within R_proj ~ 20 kpc suggest that it is unlike any subcomponent
of the Milky Way. In this work we capitalize on our proximity to and external
view of M31 to probe the kinematical properties of this "inner spheroid." We
employ a Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) analysis of resolved stellar
kinematics from Keck/DEIMOS spectra of 5651 red giant branch stars to
disentangle M31's inner spheroid from its stellar disk. We measure the mean
velocity and dispersion of the spheroid in each of five spatial bins after
accounting for a locally cold stellar disk as well as the Giant Southern Stream
and associated tidal debris. For the first time, we detect significant spheroid
rotation (v_rot ~ 50 km/s) beyond R_proj ~ 5 kpc. The velocity dispersion
decreases from about 140 km/s at R_proj = 7 kpc to 120 km/s at R_proj = 14 kpc,
consistent to 2 sigma with existing measurements and models. We calculate the
probability that a given star is a member of the spheroid and find that the
spheroid has a significant presence throughout the spatial extent of our
sample. Lastly, we show that the flattening of the spheroid is due to velocity
anisotropy in addition to rotation. Though this suggests that the inner
spheroid of M31 more closely resembles an elliptical galaxy than a typical
spiral galaxy bulge, it should be cautioned that our measurements are much

A pilot investigation of emotional regulation difficulties and mindfulness-based strategies in manic and remitted bipolar I disorder and major depressive disorder
Background: Both bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder are characterized by difficulties in emotion regulation. Little is known about which specific emotion regulatory patterns may be transdiagnostic versus disorder specific, and how such patterns change as a function of current mood states.
Methods: This preliminary investigation examined specific patterns of self-reported trait emotion regulation difficulties and mindfulness-based regulations strategies across four groups: remitted adults with bipolar I disorder (BD-remitted; n = 32), currently manic adults with bipolar I disorder (BD-manic; n = 19), remitted adults with major depressive disorder (MDD-remitted; n = 32), and healthy controls (CTL; n = 30).
Results: All three clinical groups reported significantly greater difficulties with emotion regulation and decreased overall mindfulness-based strategies.
Conclusions: These results suggest that increased emotion regulation difficulties, decreased mindfulness, and increased emotion-driven impulsivity may be transdiagnostic across mood disorders and states, and that impulsivity may be particularly impaired during periods of mania.

Reward Dysregulation and Mood Symptoms in an Adolescent Outpatient Sample
Research on bipolar spectrum disorders (BPSD) in adolescence has burgeoned in the last decade, but continued work is needed to identify endophenotypic markers associated with illness onset and course. The present study examined reward dysregulation – measured via the behavioral activation system (BAS) – as one putative marker of BPSD in adolescence. A diverse group of 425 outpatient adolescents between 11–17 years of age (52% male) completed the Behavioral Inhibition and Activation Scale (BIS-BAS) scale to measure reward dysregulation. Semi-structured interviews determined diagnoses and severity of mood symptoms. Parent-reported BAS was associated with increased symptoms of mania, and parent and adolescent-reported BAS were associated with symptoms of depression. Parent-reported BIS scores were associated with increased symptoms of mania. Results held independent of diagnostic status. Furthermore, parent BIS/BAS reports were stronger predictors for manic symptoms compared to adolescent-reports. Results extend work in adults with BPSD, suggesting a transdiagnostic association between reward dysregulation and mood symptom severity in adolescence
The Panchromatic Hubble Andromeda Treasury I: Bright UV Stars in the Bulge of M31
As part of the Panchromatic Hubble Andromeda Treasury (PHAT) multi-cycle
program, we observed a 12' \times 6.5' area of the bulge of M31 with the
WFC3/UVIS filters F275W and F336W. From these data we have assembled a sample
of \sim4000 UV-bright, old stars, vastly larger than previously available. We
use updated Padova stellar evolutionary tracks to classify these hot stars into
three classes: Post-AGB stars (P-AGB), Post-Early AGB (PE-AGB) stars and
AGB-manqu\'e stars. P-AGB stars are the end result of the asymptotic giant
branch (AGB) phase and are expected in a wide range of stellar populations,
whereas PE-AGB and AGB-manqu\'e (together referred to as the hot
post-horizontal branch; HP-HB) stars are the result of insufficient envelope
masses to allow a full AGB phase, and are expected to be particularly prominent
at high helium or {\alpha} abundances when the mass loss on the RGB is high.
Our data support previous claims that most UV-bright sources in the bulge are
likely hot (extreme) horizontal branch stars (EHB) and their progeny. We
construct the first radial profiles of these stellar populations, and show that
they are highly centrally concentrated, even more so than the integrated UV or
optical light. However, we find that this UV-bright population does not
dominate the total UV luminosity at any radius, as we are detecting only the
progeny of the EHB stars that are the likely source of the UVX. We calculate
that only a few percent of MS stars in the central bulge can have gone through
the HP-HB phase and that this percentage decreases strongly with distance from
the center. We also find that the surface density of hot UV-bright stars has
the same radial variation as that of low-mass X-ray binaries. We discuss age,
metallicity, and abundance variations as possible explanations for the observed
radial variation in the UV-bright population.Comment: Accepted for publication in Ap
Addressing uncertainty in marine resource management; combining community engagement and tracking technology to characterize human behavior

Here, using a national-scale study in the Republic of Congo, we engaged with fishers from 23 of 28 small-scale fisheries landing sites along the coast to demonstrate how combining community engagement and relatively low cost Global Positioning System (GPS) trackers can rapidly provide fine-scale information on: (1) the behavioral dynamics of the fishers and fleets that operate within this sector; and (2) the location, size and attributes of important fishing grounds upon which communities are dependent. This multi-disciplinary approach should be considered within a global context where uncertainty over the behavior of marine and terrestrial resource-users can lead to management decisions that potentially compromise local livelihoods, conservation, and resource sustainability goals.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
Facial expressions depicting compassionate and critical emotions: the development and validation of a new emotional face stimulus set
Attachment with altruistic others requires the ability to appropriately process affiliative and kind facial cues. Yet there is no stimulus set available to investigate such processes. Here, we developed a stimulus set depicting compassionate and critical facial expressions, and validated its effectiveness using well-established visual-probe methodology. In Study 1, 62 participants rated photographs of actors displaying compassionate/kind and critical faces on strength of emotion type. This produced a new stimulus set based on N = 31 actors, whose facial expressions were reliably distinguished as compassionate, critical and neutral. In Study 2, 70 participants completed a visual-probe task measuring attentional orientation to critical and compassionate/kind faces. This revealed that participants lower in self-criticism demonstrated enhanced attention to compassionate/kind faces whereas those higher in self-criticism showed no bias. To sum, the new stimulus set produced interpretable findings using visual-probe methodology and is the first to include higher order, complex positive affect displays
An Easy-To-Use Simulation Program Demonstrates Variations in Bacterial Cell Cycle Parameters Depending on Medium and Temperature

Multi-level analysis of the gut-brain axis shows autism spectrum disorder-associated molecular and microbial profiles
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by heterogeneous cognitive, behavioral and communication impairments. Disruption of the gut-brain axis (GBA) has been implicated in ASD although with limited reproducibility across studies. In this study, we developed a Bayesian differential ranking algorithm to identify ASD-associated molecular and taxa profiles across 10 cross-sectional microbiome datasets and 15 other datasets, including dietary patterns, metabolomics, cytokine profiles and human brain gene expression profiles. We found a functional architecture along the GBA that correlates with heterogeneity of ASD phenotypes, and it is characterized by ASD-associated amino acid, carbohydrate and lipid profiles predominantly encoded by microbial species in the genera Prevotella, Bifidobacterium, Desulfovibrio and Bacteroides and correlates with brain gene expression changes, restrictive dietary patterns and pro-inflammatory cytokine profiles. The functional architecture revealed in age-matched and sex-matched cohorts is not present in sibling-matched cohorts. We also show a strong association between temporal changes in microbiome composition and ASD phenotypes. In summary, we propose a framework to leverage multi-omic datasets from well-defined cohorts and investigate how the GBA influences ASD
