    A rigorous approach to the robust design of continuous-time ΣΔ modulators

    In this paper we present a framework for robust design of continuous-time Sigma Delta modulators. The approach allows to find a modulator which maintains its performance ( stability, guaranteed peak SNR, ...) over all the foreseen parasitic effects, provided it exists. For this purpose, we have introduced the S-figure as a criterion for the robustness of a continuous-time Sigma Delta modulator. This figure, inspired by the worst-case-distance methodology, indicates how close a design is to violating one of its performance requirements. Optimal robustness is obtained by optimizing this S-figure. The approach is illustrated through various design examples and is able to find modulators that are robust to excess loop delay, clock jitter and coefficient variations. As an application of the approach, we have quantified the effect of coefficient trimming. Even with poor trim resolution, good performance can be achieved provided beneficial initial system parameters are chosen. Another example illustrates the fact that also the out-of-band peaking behavior of the signal transfer function can be controlled with our design framework

    The Nyquist criterion: a useful tool for the robust design of continuous-time ΣΔ modulators

    This paper introduces a figure of merit for the robustness of continuous-time sigma-delta modulators. It is based on the Nyquist criterion for the equivalent discrete-time (DT) loop filter. It is shown how continuous-time modulators can be designed by optimizing this figure of merit. This way modulators with increased robustness against variations in the noise-transfer function (NTF) parameters are obtained. This is particularly useful for constrained systems, where the system order exceeds the number of design parameters. This situation occurs for example due to the effect of excess loop delay (ELD) or finite gain bandwidth (GBW) of the opamps. Additionally, it is shown that the optimization is equivalent to the minimization of H_infinity, the maximum out-of-band gain of the NTF. This explains why conventional design strategies that are based on H_infinity, such as Schreier’s approach, provide quite robust modulator designs in the case of unconstrained architectures

    VOC and ozone fluxes from a pine forest in the north of Belgium

    Plants release large amounts of carbon as Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) into the atmosphere. These VOCs play an important role in the chemistry of the troposphere as they can be involved in the mechanisms of ozone and aerosol formation. The key mechanisms underneath biogenic VOC emissions are still not well understood, leading to large uncertainties in BVOC inventories on global and regional scales. Measurements of VOCs, ozone and micro-meteorology are conducted at the ‘De inslag’, a 80-year old mixed pine–oak forest located in the Campine region near Antwerp, Belgium. The forest site is a level-II plot of the European Programme of Intensive Monitoring Forest Ecosystems and is part of the Carboeuro and Nitroeurope-flux research network. The site is equipped with a flux tower that reaches above the 23m canopy. A Proton Transfer Reaction Mass Spectrometer and a Fast Ozone analyser allow determining VOC and ozone fluxes by Eddy Covariance. An analytic footprint model is used to exclude non-forest fluxes. In this study, we will test the accuracy of this footprint model with anthropogenic tracers (benzene and toluene)

    An heuristic filtering tool to identify phenotype-associated genetic variants applied to human intellectual disability and canine coat colors

    Background: Identification of one or several disease causing variant(s) from the large collection of variants present in an individual is often achieved by the sequential use of heuristic filters. The recent development of whole exome sequencing enrichment designs for several non-model species created the need for a species-independent, fast and versatile analysis tool, capable of tackling a wide variety of standard and more complex inheritance models. With this aim, we developed "Mendelian", an R-package that can be used for heuristic variant filtering. Results: The R-package Mendelian offers fast and convenient filters to analyze putative variants for both recessive and dominant models of inheritance, with variable degrees of penetrance and detectance. Analysis of trios is supported. Filtering against variant databases and annotation of variants is also included. This package is not species specific and supports parallel computation. We validated this package by reanalyzing data from a whole exome sequencing experiment on intellectual disability in humans. In a second example, we identified the mutations responsible for coat color in the dog. This is the first example of whole exome sequencing without prior mapping in the dog. Conclusion: We developed an R-package that enables the identification of disease-causing variants from the long list of variants called in sequencing experiments.     Intra-arterial versus intra venous contrast-enhanced computed tomography of the equine head

    Background: The anatomical complexity of the horse’s head limits the abilities of radiography. Computed tomography (CT) in combination with contrast enhanced CT is used more often for diagnosing various head pathology in horses. The objective of this study was to compare intravenous and intra-arterial contrast-enhancement techniques and describe normal and abnormal contrast enhancement in the horse’s head. Results: All 24 horses included in the study recovered without complication from the procedures. Compared to the pre-contrast studies, post-contrast studies showed significant contrast enhancement in the pituitary gland (IA: p < 0.0001; IV: p < 0.0001), IA nose septum (p = 0.002), nose mucosa (IA: p < 0.0001; IV: p = 0.02), parotid salivary gland (IA: p < 0.0001; IV p < 0.0001), cerebrum (IA: p < 0.0001; IV: p < 0.0001), rectus capitis muscle (IA: p < 0.0001; IV p = 0.001), IA temporal muscle (p < 0.0001), IA masseter muscle (p <0.0001) and IV brainstem (p = 0.01). No significant contrast enhancement was seen in the eye (IA: p = 0.23; IV p = 0.33), tongue (IA p = 0.2; IV p = 0.57), IA brainstem (p = 0.88), IV nose septum (p = 0.26), IV temporal muscle (p = 0.09) and IV masseter muscle (p = 0.46). Three different categories of abnormal enhancement were detected: a strong vascularised mass, an enhanced rim surrounding an unenhanced structure and an inflamed anatomical structure with abnormal contrast enhancement. Conclusion: Using the intra-arterial technique, similar contrast enhancement is achieved using less contrast medium compared to the intravenous technique. And a potential major advantage of the IA technique is the ability to evaluate lesions that are characterized by increased blood flow. Using the intravenous technique, a symmetrical and homogenous enhancement is achieved, however timing is more crucial and the contrast dosage is more of influence in the IV protocol. And a potential major advantage of the IV technique is the ability to evaluate lesions that are characterized by increased vascular permeability. Knowing the different normal contrast enhancement patterns will facilitate the recognition of abnormal contrast enhancements

    Two male Golden retrievers, each one about ten years old, were presented with a visible mass in the nose, showing symptoms of sneezing and epistaxis. The histopathological examination of biopsies indicated that both dogs were affected by a squamous cell carcinoma. Further staging did not reveal any indications for metastases. Surgical removal of the tumor through a planectomy or nosectomy was proposed. Since the classical removal of the nose was cosmetically unacceptable for the owners of both dogs, a rostral nose reconstruction was opted for in both cases. As the tumor in the first dog was rather superficial, resection of the cartilaginous part of the nose (planectomy) turned out to be sufficient. In the second dog however, there was also evidence of bony involvement. Therefore, not only the nose but also the os incisiva was removed (nosectomy). In both cases, remission of the tumor was obtained after a 35 and 29 months follow-up, respectively, accompanied by an excellent cosmetic result

    Time-Integrated Position Error Accounts for Sensorimotor Behavior in Time-Constrained Tasks

    Several studies have shown that human motor behavior can be successfully described using optimal control theory, which describes behavior by optimizing the trade-off between the subject's effort and performance. This approach predicts that subjects reach the goal exactly at the final time. However, another strategy might be that subjects try to reach the target position well before the final time to avoid the risk of missing the target. To test this, we have investigated whether minimizing the control effort and maximizing the performance is sufficient to describe human motor behavior in time-constrained motor tasks. In addition to the standard model, we postulate a new model which includes an additional cost criterion which penalizes deviations between the position of the effector and the target throughout the trial, forcing arrival on target before the final time. To investigate which model gives the best fit to the data and to see whether that model is generic, we tested both models in two different tasks where subjects used a joystick to steer a ball on a screen to hit a target (first task) or one of two targets (second task) before a final time. Noise of different amplitudes was superimposed on the ball position to investigate the ability of the models to predict motor behavior for different levels of uncertainty. The results show that a cost function representing only a trade-off between effort and accuracy at the end time is insufficient to describe the observed behavior. The new model correctly predicts that subjects steer the ball to the target position well before the final time is reached, which is in agreement with the observed behavior. This result is consistent for all noise amplitudes and for both tasks
