    Three-body structure of the nnΛnn\Lambda system with ΛN−ΣN\Lambda N-\Sigma N coupling

    The structure of the three-body nnΛnn\Lambda system, which has been observed recently by the HypHI collaboration, is investigated taking ΛN−ΣN\Lambda N-\Sigma N coupling explicitly into account. The YNYN and NNNN interactions employed in this work reproduce the binding energies of Λ3^3_{\Lambda}H, Λ4^4_{\Lambda}H and Λ4^4_{\Lambda}He. We do not find any Λ3n^3_{\Lambda}n bound state, which contradicts the interpretation of the data reported by the HypHI collaboration.Comment: To be publsihed in PRC as a Rapid communicatio

    Higher-order compatible finite element schemes for the nonlinear rotating shallow water equations on the sphere

Available from Elsevier via the DOI in this record.We describe a compatible finite element discretisation for the shallow water equations on the rotating sphere, concentrating on integrating consistent upwind stabilisation into the framework. Although the prognostic variables are velocity and layer depth, the discretisation has a diagnostic potential vorticity that satisfies a stable upwinded advection equation through a Taylor–Galerkin scheme; this provides a mechanism for dissipating enstrophy at the gridscale whilst retaining optimal order consistency. We also use upwind discontinuous Galerkin schemes for the transport of layer depth. These transport schemes are incorporated into a semi-implicit formulation that is facilitated by a hybridisation method for solving the resulting mixed Helmholtz equation.     Gravitational hydrodynamics of large scale structure formation

    The gravitational hydrodynamics of the primordial plasma with neutrino hot dark matter is considered as a challenge to the bottom-up cold dark matter paradigm. Viscosity and turbulence induce a top-down fragmentation scenario before and at decoupling. The first step is the creation of voids in the plasma, which expand to 37 Mpc on the average now. The remaining matter clumps turn into galaxy clusters. Turbulence produced at expanding void boundaries causes a linear morphology of 3 kpc fragmenting protogalaxies along vortex lines. At decoupling galaxies and proto-globular star clusters arise; the latter constitute the galactic dark matter halos and consist themselves of earth-mass H-He planets. Frozen planets are observed in microlensing and white-dwarf-heated ones in planetary nebulae. The approach also explains the Tully-Fisher and Faber-Jackson relations, and cosmic microwave temperature fluctuations of micro-Kelvins.Comment: 6 pages, no figure

    A domain-specific language for the hybridization and static condensation of finite element methods

    In this paper, we introduce a domain-specific language (DSL) for concisely expressing localized linear algebra on finite element tensors and its integration within a code-generation framework. This DSL is general enough to facilitate the automatic generation of element-based dense linear algebra kernels necessary for the implementation of static condensation methods and local solvers for a variety of problems. We demonstrate its use for the static condensation of continuous Galerkin problems, and systems arising from hybridizing finite element discretizations. We also describe how this DSL can be used to execute local post-processing procedures to construct superconvergent approximations to mixed problems. This work also features high-level implementations of static condensation and hybrid-mixed methods as preconditioners conforming to PETSc's interface for solving linear systems. These preconditioning interfaces provide reduced operators, which are obtained from locally assembled expressions, with the necessary context to specify full solver configurations on the resulting linear systems. We validate our implementations within the context of model second-order elliptic problems. Finally, we conclude with a performance comparison highlighting the use of a hybrid-mixed method as an efficient preconditioner in a semi-implicit method for the nonlinear rotating shallow water equations

    Towards a fundamental astrometric reference system behind the Malleganic clouds : spectroscopic confirmation of new quasar candidates selected in the near-infrared

    Quasi-stellar objects (quasars) located behind nearby galaxies provide an excellent absolute reference system for astrometric studies, but they are difficult to identify because of fore- and background contamination. We have embarked on a programme to expand the quasar reference system behind the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds, the Magellanic Bridge and Magellanic Stream. Hundreds of quasar candidates were selected, based on their near-infrared colours and variability properties from the ESO VISTA Magellanic Clouds (VMC) Public Survey. A subset of 49 objects was followed up with optical spectroscopy with FORS2. We confirmed the quasar nature of 37 objects (34 new identifications) that span a redshift range from z ~ 0.5 to 4.1

Quasi-stellar objects (quasars) located behind nearby galaxies provide an excellent absolute reference system for astrometric studies, but they are difficult to identify because of fore- and background contamination. Deep wide-field, high angular resolution surveys spanning the entire area of nearby galaxies are needed to obtain a complete census of such quasars. Aims. We embarked on a program to expand the quasar reference system behind the Large and the Small Magellanic Clouds, the Magellanic Bridge, and the Magellanic Stream that connects the Clouds with the Milky Way. Methods. Hundreds of quasar candidates were selected based on their near-infrared colors and variability properties from the ongoing public ESO VISTA Magellanic Clouds survey. A subset of 49 objects was followed up with optical spectroscopy. Results. We confirmed the quasar nature of 37 objects (34 new identifications): four are low redshift objects, three are probably stars, and the remaining three lack prominent spectral features for a secure classification. The bona fide quasars, identified from their broad emisison lines, are located as follows: 10 behind the LMC, 13 behind the SMC, and 14 behind the Bridge. The quasars span a redshift range from z ~ 0.5 to z ~ 4.1. Conclusions. Upon completion the VMC survey is expected to yield a total of ~1500 quasars with Y< 19.32 mag, J< 19.09 mag, and Ks< 18.04 mag

    Dealing with a traumatic past: the victim hearings of the South African truth and reconciliation commission and their reconciliation discourse

    In the final years of the twentieth and the beginning of the twenty-first century, there has been a worldwide tendency to approach conflict resolution from a restorative rather than from a retributive perspective. The South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), with its principle of 'amnesty for truth' was a turning point. Based on my discursive research of the TRC victim hearings, I would argue that it was on a discursive level in particular that the Truth Commission has exerted/is still exerting a long-lasting impact on South African society. In this article, three of these features will be highlighted and illustrated: firstly, the TRC provided a discursive forum for thousands of ordinary citizens. Secondly, by means of testimonies from apartheid victims and perpetrators, the TRC composed an officially recognised archive of the apartheid past. Thirdly, the reconciliation discourse created at the TRC victim hearings formed a template for talking about a traumatic past, and it opened up the debate on reconciliation. By discussing these three features and their social impact, it will become clear that the way in which the apartheid past was remembered at the victim hearings seemed to have been determined, not so much by political concerns, but mainly by social needs

    Inclusive K+K^+ and exclusive K+YK^+Y photoproduction on the deuteron: Λ\Lambda- and Σ\Sigma-threshold phenomena

    Inclusive K+K^+ and exclusive K+YK^+Y photoproduction on the deuteron are investigated theoretically. Modern hyperon-nucleon forces and a recently updated kaon photoproduction operator for the γ+N→K++Y\gamma +N\to K^++Y process are used. Sizable effects of the hyperon-nucleon final state interaction are found near the K+ΛNK^+\Lambda N and K+ΣNK^+\Sigma N thresholds in the inclusive reaction. Angular distributions for the exclusive process show clear YNYN final state interaction effects in certain kinematic regions. Precise data especially for the inclusive process around the K+ΣNK^+\Sigma N threshold would help to clarify the strength and property of the ΛN−ΣN\Lambda N-\Sigma N interaction.Comment: 14 pages, 10 figure
