Imaging and quantum efficiency measurement of chromium emitters in diamond
We present direct imaging of the emission pattern of individual
chromium-based single photon emitters in diamond and measure their quantum
efficiency. By imaging the excited state transition dipole intensity
distribution in the back focal plane of high numerical aperture objective, we
determined that the emission dipole is oriented nearly orthogonal to the
diamond-air interface. Employing ion implantation techniques, the emitters were
engineered with various proximities from the diamond-air interface. By
comparing the decay rates from the single chromium emitters at different depths
in the diamond crystal, an average quantum efficiency of 28% was measured.Comment: 11 pages and 4 figure

Gravitational hydrodynamics of large scale structure formation
The gravitational hydrodynamics of the primordial plasma with neutrino hot
dark matter is considered as a challenge to the bottom-up cold dark matter
paradigm. Viscosity and turbulence induce a top-down fragmentation scenario
before and at decoupling. The first step is the creation of voids in the
plasma, which expand to 37 Mpc on the average now. The remaining matter clumps
turn into galaxy clusters. Turbulence produced at expanding void boundaries
causes a linear morphology of 3 kpc fragmenting protogalaxies along vortex
lines. At decoupling galaxies and proto-globular star clusters arise; the
latter constitute the galactic dark matter halos and consist themselves of
earth-mass H-He planets. Frozen planets are observed in microlensing and
white-dwarf-heated ones in planetary nebulae. The approach also explains the
Tully-Fisher and Faber-Jackson relations, and cosmic microwave temperature
fluctuations of micro-Kelvins.Comment: 6 pages, no figure
Properties of simulated Milky Way-mass galaxies in loose group and field environments
We test the validity of comparing simulated field disk galaxies with the
empirical properties of systems situated within environments more comparable to
loose groups, including the Milky Way's Local Group. Cosmological simulations
of Milky Way-mass galaxies have been realised in two different environment
samples: in the field and in environments with similar properties to the Local
Group. Apart from the environments of the galaxies, the samples are kept as
homogeneous as possible with equivalent ranges in last major merger time, halo
mass and halo spin. Comparison of these two samples allow for systematic
differences in the simulations to be identified. Metallicity gradients, disk
scale lengths, colours, magnitudes and age-velocity dispersion relations are
studied for each galaxy in the suite and the strength of the link between these
and environment of the galaxies is studied. The bulge-to-disk ratio of the
galaxies show that these galaxies are less spheroid dominated than many other
simulated galaxies in literature with the majority of both samples being disk
dominated. We find that secular evolution and mergers dominate the spread of
morphologies and metallicity gradients with no visible differences between the
two environment samples. In contrast with this consistency in the two samples
there is tentative evidence for a systematic difference in the velocity
dispersion-age relations of galaxies in the different environments. Loose group
galaxies appear to have more discrete steps in their velocity dispersion-age
relations. We conclude that at the current resolution of cosmological galaxy
simulations field environment galaxies are sufficiently similar to those in
loose groups to be acceptable proxies for comparison with the Milky Way

The Evolution of Quasar CIV and SiIV Broad Absorption Lines Over Multi-Year Time Scales
We investigate the variability of CIV 1549A broad absorption line (BAL)
troughs over rest-frame time scales of up to ~7 yr in 14 quasars at redshifts
z>2.1. For 9 sources at sufficiently high redshift, we also compare CIV and
SiIV 1400A absorption variation. We compare shorter- and longer-term
variability using spectra from up to four different epochs per source and find
complex patterns of variation in the sample overall. The scatter in the change
of absorption equivalent width (EW), Delta EW, increases with the time between
observations. BALs do not, in general, strengthen or weaken monotonically, and
variation observed over shorter (<months) time scales is not predictive of
multi-year variation. We find no evidence for asymmetry in the distribution of
Delta EW that would indicate that BALs form and decay on different time scales,
and we constrain the typical BAL lifetime to be >~30 yr. The BAL absorption for
one source, LBQS 0022+0150, has weakened and may now be classified as a
mini-BAL. Another source, 1235+1453, shows evidence of variable, blue continuum
emission that is relatively unabsorbed by the BAL outflow. CIV and SiIV BAL
shape changes are related in at least some sources. Given their high
velocities, BAL outflows apparently traverse large spatial regions and may
interact with parsec-scale structures such as an obscuring torus. Assuming BAL
outflows are launched from a rotating accretion disk, notable azimuthal
symmetry is required in the outflow to explain the relatively small changes
observed in velocity structure over times up to 7 yr
X-raying the Winds of Luminous Active Galaxies
We briefly describe some recent observational results, mainly at X-ray
wavelengths, on the winds of luminous active galactic nuclei (AGNs). These
winds likely play a significant role in galaxy feedback. Topics covered include
(1) Relations between X-ray and UV absorption in Broad Absorption Line (BAL)
and mini-BAL quasars; (2) X-ray absorption in radio-loud BAL quasars; and (3)
Evidence for relativistic iron K BALs in the X-ray spectra of a few bright
quasars. We also mention some key outstanding problems and prospects for future

Reduced NO levels due to the deficiency of tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4) contribute to impaired vasodilation in pulmonary hypertension Due to the chemically unstable nature of BH4 it was hypothesised that oxidatively stable analogues of BR, would be able to support NO synthesis to improve Endothelial dysfunction in pulmonary hypertension Two analogues of BH4 namely 6-hydroxymethyl pterin (HMP) and 6-acetyl 7 7-dimethyl 7 8-dihydropterin (ADDP) were evaluated for vasodilator activity on precontracted rat pulmonary artery rings ADDP was administered to pulmonary hypertensive rats followed by measurement of pulmonary vascular resistance in perfused lungs and eNOS expression by immunohistochemistry ADDP and HMP caused significant relaxation in vitro in rat pulmonary arteries depleted of BH4 with a maximum relaxation at 0 3 mu M (both P<005) Vasodilator activity of ADDP and HMP was completely abolished following preincubation with the NO synthase inhibitor L-NAME ADDP and HMP did not alter relaxation induced by carbachol or spermine NONOate BH4 Itself did not produce relaxation In rats receiving ADDP 141 mg/kg/day pulmonary vasodilation induced by calcium ionophore A23187 was augmented and eNOS immunoreactivity was increased In conclusion ADDP and HMP are two analogues of BH4 which can act as oxidatively stable alternatives to BH4 in causing NO-mediated vasorelaxation Chronic treatment with ADDP resulted in Improvement of NO-mediated pulmonary artery dilation and enhanced expression of eNOS in the pulmonary vascular endothelium Chemically stable analogue, of BH4 may be able to limit endothelial dysfunction in the pulmonary vasculatur
What should an index of school segregation measure?
The article aims to make a methodological contribution to the education segregation literature, providing a critique of previous measures of segregation used in the literature, as well as suggesting an alternative approach to measuring segregation. Specifically, the paper examines Gorard, Fitz and Taylor's finding that social segregation between schools, as measured by free school meals (FSM) entitlement, fell significantly in the years following the 1988 Education Reform Act. Using Annual Schools Census data from 1989 to 2004, the paper challenges the magnitude of their findings, suggesting that the method used by Gorard et al. seriously overstates the size of the fall in segregation. We make the case for a segregation curve approach to measuring segregation, where comparisons of the level of segregation are possible regardless of the percentage FSM eligibility. Using this approach, we develop a new method for describing both the level and the location of school segregation
Shuttle STS-2 mission communication systems RF coverage and performance predictions. Volume 1: Ascent
The RF communications capabilities and nominally expected performance for the ascent phase of the second orbital flight of the shuttle are provided. Predicted performance is given mainly in the form of plots of signal strength versus elapsed mission time for the STDN (downlink) and shuttle orbiter (uplink) receivers for the S-band PM and FM, and UHF systems. Performance of the NAV and landing RF systems is treated for RTLS abort, since in this case the spacecraft will loop around and return to the launch site. NAV and landing RF systems include TACAN, MSBLS, and C-band altimeter. Signal strength plots were produced by a computer program which combines the spacecraft trajectory, antenna patterns, transmit and receive performance characteristics, and system mathematical models. When available, measured spacecraft parameters were used in the predictions; otherwise, specified values were used. Specified ground station parameter values were also used. Hydrothermal activity and magma genesis along a propagating back-arc basin: Valu Fa Ridge (southern Lau Basin)
Valu Fa Ridge is an intraoceanic back-arc spreading center located at the southern prolongation of the Lau basin. Bathymetric observations as well as detailed sampling have been carried out along the spreading axis in order to trace hydrothermal and volcanic activity and to study magma generation processes. The survey shows that widespread lava flows from recent volcanic eruptions covered most of the Vai Lili hydrothermal vent field; only diffuse low-temperature discharge and the formation of thin layers of siliceous precipitates have been observed. Evidence of present-day hydrothermal activity at the Hine Hina site is indicated by a thermal anomaly in the overlying water column. Our studies did not reveal any signs of hydrothermal activity either above the seismically imaged magma chamber at 22°25′S or across the southern rift fault zone (22°51′S). Lavas recovered along the Valu Fa Ridge range from basaltic andesites to rhyolites with SiO2 contents higher than reported from any other intraoceanic back-arc basin. On the basis of the highly variable degrees of crystal fractionation along axis, the development of small disconnected magma bodies is suggested. In addition, the geochemical character of the volcanic rocks shows that the transition zone from oceanic spreading to propagating rifting is located south of the Hine Hina vent field in the vicinity of 22°35′S
