Turbulence and turbulent mixing in natural fluids
Turbulence and turbulent mixing in natural fluids begins with big bang
turbulence powered by spinning combustible combinations of Planck particles and
Planck antiparticles. Particle prograde accretions on a spinning pair releases
42% of the particle rest mass energy to produce more fuel for turbulent
combustion. Negative viscous stresses and negative turbulence stresses work
against gravity, extracting mass-energy and space-time from the vacuum.
Turbulence mixes cooling temperatures until strong-force viscous stresses
freeze out turbulent mixing patterns as the first fossil turbulence. Cosmic
microwave background temperature anisotropies show big bang turbulence fossils
along with fossils of weak plasma turbulence triggered as plasma photon-viscous
forces permit gravitational fragmentation on supercluster to galaxy mass
scales. Turbulent morphologies and viscous-turbulent lengths appear as linear
gas-proto-galaxy-clusters in the Hubble ultra-deep-field at z~7. Proto-galaxies
fragment into Jeans-mass-clumps of primordial-gas-planets at decoupling: the
dark matter of galaxies. Shortly after the plasma to gas transition,
planet-mergers produce stars that explode on overfeeding to fertilize and
distribute the first life.Comment: 23 pages 12 figures, Turbulent Mixing and Beyond 2009 International

Methanol oxidation on Fe2O3catalysts and the effects of surface Mo
The adsorption of methanol on haematite has been investigated using temperature programmed methods, combined with in situ DRIFTS. Model catalysts based on this material have then been made with a shell–core configuration of molybdenum oxide monolayers on top of the haematite core. These are used as models of industrial iron molybdate catalysts, used to selectively oxidise methanol to formaldehyde, one of the major chemical outlets for methanol. Haematite itself is completely ineffective in this respect since it oxidises it to CO2 and the DRIFTS shows that this occurs by oxidation of methoxy to formate at around 200 °C. The decomposition behaviour is affected by the absence or presence of oxygen in the gas phase; oxygen destabilises the methoxy and enhances formate production. In contrast, when a monolayer of molybdena is placed onto the surface by incipient wetness, and it remains there after calcination, the pathway to formate production is blocked and formaldehyde is the main gas phase product in TPD after methanol dosing

Gravitational hydrodynamics of large scale structure formation
The gravitational hydrodynamics of the primordial plasma with neutrino hot
dark matter is considered as a challenge to the bottom-up cold dark matter
paradigm. Viscosity and turbulence induce a top-down fragmentation scenario
before and at decoupling. The first step is the creation of voids in the
plasma, which expand to 37 Mpc on the average now. The remaining matter clumps
turn into galaxy clusters. Turbulence produced at expanding void boundaries
causes a linear morphology of 3 kpc fragmenting protogalaxies along vortex
lines. At decoupling galaxies and proto-globular star clusters arise; the
latter constitute the galactic dark matter halos and consist themselves of
earth-mass H-He planets. Frozen planets are observed in microlensing and
white-dwarf-heated ones in planetary nebulae. The approach also explains the
Tully-Fisher and Faber-Jackson relations, and cosmic microwave temperature
fluctuations of micro-Kelvins.Comment: 6 pages, no figure
Galactic Archaeology and Minimum Spanning Trees
Chemical tagging of stellar debris from disrupted open clusters and
associations underpins the science cases for next-generation multi-object
spectroscopic surveys. As part of the Galactic Archaeology project TraCD
(Tracking Cluster Debris), a preliminary attempt at reconstructing the birth
clouds of now phase-mixed thin disk debris is undertaken using a parametric
minimum spanning tree (MST) approach. Empirically-motivated chemical abundance
pattern uncertainties (for a 10-dimensional chemistry-space) are applied to
NBODY6-realised stellar associations dissolved into a background sea of field
stars, all evolving in a Milky Way potential. We demonstrate that significant
population reconstruction degeneracies appear when the abundance uncertainties
approach 0.1 dex and the parameterised MST approach is employed; more
sophisticated methodologies will be required to ameliorate these degeneracies.Comment: To appear in "Multi-Object Spectroscopy in the Next Decade: Big

Simple and accurate modelling of the gravitational potential produced by thick and thin exponential discs
We present accurate models of the gravitational potential produced by a radially exponential disc mass distribution. The models are produced by combining three separate Miyamoto–Nagai discs. Such models have been used previously to model the disc of the Milky Way, but here we extend this framework to allow its application to discs of any mass, scalelength, and a wide range of thickness from infinitely thin to near spherical (ellipticities from 0 to 0.9). The models have the advantage of simplicity of implementation, and we expect faster run speeds over a double exponential disc treatment. The potentials are fully analytical, and differentiable at all points. The mass distribution of our models deviates from the radial mass distribution of a pure exponential disc by <0.4 per cent out to 4 disc scalelengths, and <1.9 per cent out to 10 disc scalelengths. We tabulate fitting parameters which facilitate construction of exponential discs for any scalelength, and a wide range of disc thickness (a user-friendly, web-based interface is also available). Our recipe is well suited for numerical modelling of the tidal effects of a giant disc galaxy on star clusters or dwarf galaxies. We consider three worked examples; the Milky Way thin and thick disc, and a discy dwarf galaxy
Assembly and force measurement with SPM-like probes in holographic optical tweezers
We report a high fidelity tomographic reconstruction of the quantum state of photon pairs generated by parametric down-conversion with orbital angular momentum (OAM) entanglement. Our tomography method allows us to estimate an upper and lower bound for the entanglement between the down-converted photons. We investigate the two-dimensional state subspace defined by the OAM states ±ℓ and superpositions thereof, with ℓ=1, 2, ..., 30. We find that the reconstructed density matrix, even for OAMs up to around ℓ=20, is close to that of a maximally entangled Bell state with a fidelity in the range between F=0.979 and F=0.814. This demonstrates that, although the single count-rate diminishes with increasing ℓ, entanglement persists in a large dimensional state space
Vortex-type elastic structured media and dynamic shielding
The paper addresses a novel model of metamaterial structure. A system of
spinners has been embedded into a two-dimensional periodic lattice system. The
equations of motion of spinners are used to derive the expression for the
chiral term in the equations describing the dynamics of the lattice. Dispersion
of elastic waves is shown to possess innovative filtering and polarization
properties induced by the vortextype nature of the structured media. The
related homogenised effective behavior is obtained analytically and it has been
implemented to build a shielding cloak around an obstacle. Analytical work is
accompanied by numerical illustrations.Comment: 24 pages, 13 figure
