    Flora of Vascular Plants in Ridgelines in the Palgongsa Procincial Park, Korea

    AbstractWe investigated and analyzed the flora of vascular plants around ridgelines in the Palgongsan Provincial Park to suggest fundamental data for establishing preservation plans of them. The flora of vascular plants around ridgelines was a total of 587 taxa including 102 familiies, 314 genera, 518 species, 58 varieties, 7 forma, and 4 subspecies. Rare plants designated by Korea Forest Service were 27 taxa including Semiquilegia mandshurica and Aristolochia manshuriensis. Endemic plants were 15 taxa including Clematis trichotoma and Carex okamotoi. Floristic special plants were a total of 100 taxa including all five classes. Naturalized plants were 13 taxa including Phytolacca Americana, ambrosia, and Taraxacum officinale

    Tip-Enhanced Raman Scattering Imaging of Two-Dimensional Tungsten Disulfide with Optimized Tip Fabrication Process

    We successfully achieve the tip-enhanced nano Raman scattering images of a tungsten disulfide monolayer with optimizing a fabrication method of gold nanotip by controlling the concentration of etchant in an electrochemical etching process. By applying a square-wave voltage supplied from an arbitrary waveform generator to a gold wire, which is immersed in a hydrochloric acid solution diluted with ethanol at various ratios, we find that both the conical angle and radius of curvature of the tip apex can be varied by changing the ratio of hydrochloric acid and ethanol. We also suggest a model to explain the origin of these variations in the tip shape. From the systematic study, we find an optimal condition for achieving the yield of similar to 60% with the radius of similar to 34 nm and the cone angle of similar to 35 degrees. Using representative tips fabricated under the optimal etching condition, we demonstrate the tip-enhanced Raman scattering experiment of tungsten disulfide monolayer grown by a chemical vapor deposition method with a spatial resolution of similar to 40 nm and a Raman enhancement factor of similar to 4,760. © The Author(s) 2017

    Complexity of Atherosclerotic Coronary Artery Disease and Long-Term Outcomes in Patients With Unprotected Left Main Disease Treated With Drug-Eluting Stents or Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting

    ObjectivesThe aim of this study was to compare treatment effects of drug-eluting stents (DES) or coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) for left main coronary artery (LMCA) disease according to the complexity of atherosclerotic disease burden.BackgroundLimited information is available on the relationships between the extent of coronary atherosclerosis and very long-term outcomes of surgical or percutaneous LMCA revascularization.MethodsA total of 1,146 patients with unprotected LMCA disease who received DES (n = 645) or underwent CABG (n = 501) were evaluated. The extent of atherosclerotic disease burden was measured using the SYNTAX (Synergy Between PCI With Taxus and Cardiac Surgery) score; a low-risk score was defined as ≤22, an intermediate-risk score as 23 to 32, and a high-risk score as ≥33.ResultsAfter multivariate adjustment with the inverse-probability-of-treatment weighting method, the 5-year risks for death (6.1% for DES vs. 16.2% for CABG; hazard ratio [HR]: 0.52; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.21 to 1.28; p = 0.15) and the composite of death, Q-wave myocardial infarction, or stroke (6.4% vs. 16.2%; HR: 0.54; 95% CI: 0.22 to 1.34; p = 0.18) favored DES in patients with low-risk SYNTAX scores; in contrast, the 5-year risks for death (26.9% vs. 17.8%; HR: 1.46; 95% CI: 0.92 to 2.30; p = 0.11) and the composite outcome (27.6% vs. 19.5%; HR: 1.36; 95% CI: 0.87 to 2.12; p = 0.18) favored CABG in patients with high-risk SYNTAX scores (interaction p = 0.047 for death, interaction p = 0.08 for composite outcome). Patients undergoing CABG consistently had lower rates of target vessel revascularization.ConclusionsAccording to the complexity of concomitant coronary disease, there were differential treatment effects on long-term mortality in patients with unprotected LMCA disease who received DES or underwent CABG

    Rate of Isolation and Trends of Antimicrobial Resistance of Multidrug Resistant Pseudomonas Aeruginosa from Otorrhea in Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media

    ObjectivesTo assess the rate of isolation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) and multidrug-resistant PA (MDR-PA) from patients with chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) otorrhea and the annual trend of antibiotic-resistance.MethodsOtorrhea samples were collected aseptically from 1,598 CSOM patients. The rate of bacterial isolation and the results of antibiotic susceptibility testing were evaluated retrospectively.ResultsThe PA isolation rate from CSOM otorrhea was 24.4%. Of the 398 isolated strains tested for their susceptibilities to 10 antibiotics, 395 strains showed definitive results. Of these, 183 (46.3%) were susceptible to whole antibiotics and 212 (53.7%) was resistant to more than 1 antibiotics, with the frequency of antibiotics-resistance increasing significantly over time. Although strains susceptible to all antibiotics decreased over time, the rate of isolation of MDR-PA did not change significantly. Resistance to aminoglycosides and quinolones was higher than to other antibiotics and significantly increased over time, whereas resistance to other antibiotics showed no trend.ConclusionMDR-PA, assessed using five individual antibiotics and six antibiotic-classes, showed no tendency to increase or decrease over time. This may have been due to increased concern about antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains, leading to improved infection control within hospitals and healthcare centers

    A pepper MSRB2 gene confer drought tolerance in rice through the protection of chloroplast-targeted genes

    Background: The perturbation of the steady state of reactive oxygen species (ROS) due to biotic and abiotic stresses in a plant could lead to protein denaturation through the modification of amino acid residues, including the oxidation of methionine residues. Methionine sulfoxide reductases (MSRs) catalyze the reduction of methionine sulfoxide back to the methionine residue. To assess the role of this enzyme, we generated transgenic rice using a pepper CaMSRB2 gene under the control of the rice Rab21 (responsive to ABA protein 21) promoter with/without a selection marker, the bar gene. Results: A drought resistance test on transgenic plants showed that CaMSRB2 confers drought tolerance to rice, as evidenced by less oxidative stress symptoms and a strengthened PSII quantum yield under stress conditions, and increased survival rate and chlorophyll index after the re-watering. The results from immunoblotting using a methionine sulfoxide antibody and nano-LC-MS/MS spectrometry suggest that porphobilinogen deaminase (PBGD), which is involved in chlorophyll synthesis, is a putative target of CaMSRB2. The oxidized methionine content of PBGD expressed in E. coli increased in the presence of H2O2, and the Met-95 and Met-227 residues of PBGD were reduced by CaMSRB2 in the presence of dithiothreitol (DTT). An expression profiling analysis of the overexpression lines also suggested that photosystems are less severely affected by drought stress.
