    Interleukin-1 receptor antagonist gene (IL-1RN) polymorphism is a predictive factor of clinical pregnancy after IVF

    BACKGROUND Only 25% of IVF transfer cycles lead to a clinical pregnancy, calling for continued technical progress but also more in depth analysis of patients' individual characteristics. The interleukin-1 (IL-1) system and matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are strongly implicated in embryo implantation. The genes coding for IL-1Ra (gene symbol IL-1RN), IL-1β, MMP2 and MMP9 bear functional polymorphisms. We analysed the maternal genetic profile at these polymorphic sites in IVF patients, to determine possible correlations with IVF outcome. METHODS One hundred and sixty women undergoing an IVF cycle were enrolled and a buccal smear was obtained. The presence of IL-1RN variable number of tandem repeats and IL-1B + 3953, MMP2-1306 and MMP9-1562 single nucleotide substitutions were determined. Patients were divided into pregnancy failures (119), biochemical pregnancies (8) and clinical pregnancies (33). RESULTS There was a 40% decrease in IL-1RN*2 allele frequency (P = 0.024) and a 45% decrease in IL-1RN*2 carrier status in the clinical pregnancy group as compared to the pregnancy failure group (P = 0.017). This decrease was still statistically significant after a multivariate logistic regression analysis. The likelihood of a clinical pregnancy was decreased accordingly in IL-1RN*2 carriers: odds ratio = 0.349, 95% confidence interval = 0.2-0.8, P = 0.017. The IL-1B, MMP2 and MMP9 polymorphisms showed no correlation with IVF outcome. CONCLUSIONS IL-1RN*2 allele carriage is associated with a poor prognosis of achieving a pregnancy after IV

    Retrospective analysis of the impact of respiratory motion in treatment margins for frameless lung SBRT based on respiratory-correlated CBCT data-sets.

    To investigate the impact of respiratory motion in the treatment margins for lung SBRT frameless treatments and to validate our treatment margins using 4D CBCT data analysis. Two hundred and twenty nine fractions with early stage NSCLC were retrospectively analyzed. All patients were treated in frameless and free breathing conditions. The treatment margins were calculated according to van Herk equation in Mid-Ventilation. For each fraction, three 4D CBCT scans, pre- and postcorrection, and posttreatment, were acquired to assess target baseline shift, target localization accuracy and intra-fraction motion errors. A bootstrap analysis was performed to assess the minimum number of patients required to define treatment margins. The retrospectively calculated target-baseline shift, target localization accuracy and intra-fraction motion errors agreed with the literature. The best tailored margins to our cohort of patients were retrospectively computed and resulted in agreement with already published data. The bootstrap analysis showed that fifteen patients were enough to assess treatment margins. The treatment margins applied to our patient's cohort resulted in good agreement with the retrospectively calculated margins based on 4D CBCT data. Moreover, the bootstrap analysis revealed to be a promising method to verify the reliability of the applied treatment margins for safe lung SBRT delivery

    Thinking outside the ocean-climate nexus : Towards systems-informed decision making in a rapidly changing world

    Despite repeated calls for more inclusive practices, approaches used to address current challenges within the ocean-climate nexus do not sufficiently account for the complexity of the human-social-ecological system. So far, this has prevented efficient and just decision-making and policies. We propose to shift towards systems-informed decision making, which values transdisciplinary system-thinking and cumulative impact assessments, and encourages multi-system collaboration among decision-makers in order to address the recurring technicality of policies and to foster just solutions that account for the needs of varied actors across the sustainable development spectrum

    Parmi les méthodes de segmentation existantes on peut distinguer deux grands types d'approches : les approches guidées par les données, utilisant l'information sur les niveaux de gris, et les approches à base de modèles, exploitant de la connaissance a priori. Cependant, les résultats obtenus par l'une ou l'autre de ces approches ne sont pas suffisamment satisfaisants (cas de mauvais contrastes pour les approches bas-niveau,trop grande variabilité morphologique pour les approches à base de modèles...) . Nous nous intéressons donc à l'étude et à la mise en oeuvre de techniques de coopération dans le but d'améliorer les résultats de la segmentation. Le travail est appliqué à l'IRM du cerveau

    Pion double charge exchange on 4He

    The doubly differential cross sections for the 4^4He(π+,π)4p(\pi^+,\pi^-) 4p reaction were calculated using both a two-nucleon sequential single charge exchange model and an intranuclear cascade code. Final state interactions between the two final protons which were the initial neutrons were included in both methods. At incident pion energies of 240 and 270 MeV the low-energy peak observed experimentally in the energy spectrum of the final pions can be understood only if the contribution of pion production is included.     Near threshold eta production in proton-proton collisions

    The total cross section for the near threshold eta production in proton-proton collisions has been investigated with the assumption that the production mechanism is due to the emission of a meson x (pi, eta, sigma) from one of the nucleons followed by a x N --> eta N transition on the second one. The x N --> eta N amplitudes are generated from the unitary multi-channel multi-resonance model which has recently been constructed in analyzing the pi N scattering and pi N --> eta N reaction. The initial and final pp distortions are calculated from a coupled-channel pi-NN model which describes the NN scattering data up to about 2 GeV. With the x-NN vertex functions taken from the Bonn potential, the predicted total cross sections of threshold pp --> eta pp reaction are in good agreement with the data. In contrast to previous works, we find that the eta-exchange plays an important role. The effect of the two-pion exchange, simulated by sigma- exchange, is found to be significant but not as dominant as the vector meson-exchange introduced in previous works.Comment: 9 pages (latex: elsart.sty) + 3 figures (PostScript gzip+uuencode) Submitted to Phys.Lett.

    Higher Partial Waves in p+p->p+p+eta near Threshold

    Exclusive measurements of the production of eta mesons in the p+p->p+p+eta reaction have been carried out at excess energies of 16 and 37 MeV above threshold. The deviations from phase space are dominated by the proton-proton final state interaction and this influences particularly the energy distribution of the eta meson. However, evidence is also presented at the higher energy for the existence of an anisotropy in the angular distributions of the eta meson and also of the final proton-proton pair, probably to be associated with D-waves in this system interfering with the dominant S-wave term. The sign of the eta angular anisotropy suggests that rho-exchange is important for this reaction.Comment: 16 pages, LaTeX2e, 3 EPS Figures, Updated version, Accepted for publication in Phys. Lett.

    Energy Dependence of the Near-Threshold Total Cross-Section for the pp --> pp eta' Reaction

    Total cross sections for the pp --> pp eta' reaction have been measured in the excess energy range from Q = 1.53 MeV to Q = 23.64 MeV. The experiment has been performed at the internal installation COSY-11 using a stochastically cooled proton beam of the COoler SYnchrotron COSY and a hydrogen cluster target. The determined energy dependence of the total cross section weakens the hypothesis of the S-wave repulsive interaction between the eta' meson and the proton. New data agree well with predictions based on the phase-space distribution modified by the proton-proton final-state-interaction (FSI) only.Comment: 12 pages, 1 table, 4 figure
