    Solar Enablement Initiative in Australia: Report on Efficiently Identifying Critical Cases for Evaluating the Voltage Impact of Large PV Investment

    The increasing quantity of PV generation connected to distribution networks is creating challenges in maintaining and controlling voltages in those distribution networks. Determining the maximum hosting capacity for new PV installations based on the historical data is an essential task for distribution networks. Analyzing all historical data in large distribution networks is impractical. Therefore, this paper focuses on how to time efficiently identify the critical cases for evaluating the voltage impacts of the new large PV applications in medium voltage (MV) distribution networks. A systematic approach is proposed to cluster medium voltage nodes based on electrical adjacency and time blocks. MV nodes are clustered along with the voltage magnitudes and time blocks. Critical cases of each cluster can be used for further power flow study. This method is scalable and can time efficiently identify cases for evaluating PV investment on medium voltage networks

    Development and initial validation of the Italian Mood Scale (ITAMS) for use in sport and exercise contexts

    The current study presents initial validation statistics for the Italian Mood Scale (ITAMS), a culturally- and linguistically-validated Italian version of the Brunel Mood Scale (BRUMS: Terry and Lane, 2010). The ITAMS was administered to 950 sport participants (659 females), who ranged in age from 16 to 63 years (M = 25.03, SD = 7.62). In the first stage of the validation process, statistical procedures in Mplus were used to evaluate the measurement model. Multigroup exploratory structural equation modeling supported the hypothesized 6-factor measurement model for males and females separately and for the combined sample. Analysis of the scale scores using SPSS provided further support for the construct validity of the ITAMS with hypothesized relationships observed between ITAMS scores and measures of depression and affect. The development and validation of the ITAMS opens the way for mood-related research and sport or exercise interventions requiring mood assessments, in an Italian-language context

    UV Observations of the Cool DBQA5 White Dwarf LDS 678A - Limits on the Atmospheric Composition, Pressure Shift, and Gravitational Redshift Derived from C I 2479

    A high-resolution ultraviolet spectrum of the helium-rich degenerate LDS 678A, obtained with the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) satellite, is presented. LDS 678A is the coolest metallic line degenerate (DQ or DZ) yet observed with the IUE echelle. These observations provide a detailed line profile of the strong C I 2479 absorption line and equivalent width W2479 = 2.35 + or - 0.06 A from which theoretical profile fits yield a carbon abundance of log C/He = (-6.7 + or- 0.2). The presence of carbon in a He-rich atmosphere lends credence to the notion that LDS 678A is a transitional case between the DB white dwarfs with nearly pure helium atmospheres and the helium-rich DQ white dwarfs which exhibit carbon bands. Corrected for an inferred pressure shift Vp = + 38 + or - 4 km/s for the C I 2479 line, a gravitational redshift of Vrs = + 26 + or - 13 km/s is deduced from which a most probable mass of 0.55 solar mass is derived

    Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Type 1 Parathyroid Adenoma Development over Time

    Multiple gland parathyroid disease is one of the hallmarks of multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN) type 1. Often mislabeled parathyroid hyperplasia, the process is actually the development of multiple adenomas. Some clinicians have reported results of selective parathyroidectomy in this group, removing only grossly enlarged glands. We argue that all the glands are at risk and should be addressed at any planned parathyroid intervention. Our hypothesis is that, given sufficient time, patients would all develop adenomas in each of the parathyroid glands. Our available data to address this issue are the parathyroidectomy results from a single institution series. Patients who had initial parathyroid exploration for hyperparathyroidism in the setting of MEN-1 were reviewed. This study includes those patients who had the weights of the resected glands documented; 23 men and 21 women met the criteria. The total weight of the parathyroid glands did not vary with the age of the patient at operation. However, the number of normal glands identified did vary significantly with age ( p < 0.02), with older patients being less likely to have any normal parathyroid glands. Although total parathyroid weight may correlate with development of hypercalcemia and indications for operation, the involvement of multiple parathyroid glands in MEN-1 is a function of time, as independent events in each gland must occur.     Psychometric characteristics of the Brunel Mood Scale in a Singaporean context

    Mood profiling serves several functions in the sporting domain, including monitoring of athlete mindset, early problem identification, performance prediction, and screening for pathogenic behaviours. The 24-item Brunel Mood Scale (BRUMS; Terry, Lane, Lane, & Keohane, 1999) is yet to be validated or researched extensively in a Singaporean context, and hence the current investigation provided a cross-cultural re-validation of the BRUMS. The six-factor measurement model was tested on a sample of 1,444 English-speaking Singaporean participants (age range = 18– 56+ yr., median = 22–25 yr.; male = 991, female = 440, unspecified = 13), including 954 involved in sport and 490 non-sport participants. In addition, a subgroup of 243 participants completed the BRUMS and concurrent measures of affect and psychological distress. A subgroup of 141 participants completed the BRUMS on two occasions to assess test-retest reliability. Structural equation modelling showed a good fit of the data to the measurement model (CFI = .937, TLI = .927, RMSEA = .062). Multi-sample modelling (sport vs non-sport, ≤ 25 yr. vs 26+ yr.) further supported the factorial validity of the measure. Relationships between BRUMS subscales and concurrent measures were consistent with theoretical predictions. Internal consistency and test-retest reliability coefficients were acceptable. Findings supported the psychometric integrity of the BRUMS for use in a Singaporean context, providing opportunities for further investigation of the antecedents, correlates and behavioural consequences of mood responses among Singaporean sport and non-sport participants

    Stimulating Neoblast-Like Cell Proliferation in Juvenile Fasciola hepatica Supports Growth and Progression towards the Adult Phenotype In Vitro

    Fascioliasis (or fasciolosis) is a socioeconomically important parasitic disease caused by liver flukes of the genus Fasciola. Flukicide resistance has exposed the need for new drugs and/or a vaccine for liver fluke control. A rapidly improving 'molecular toolbox' for liver fluke encompasses quality genomic/transcriptomic datasets and an RNA interference platform that facilitates functional genomics approaches to drug/vaccine target validation. The exploitation of these resources is undermined by the absence of effective culture/maintenance systems that would support in vitro studies on juvenile fluke development/biology. Here we report markedly improved in vitro maintenance methods for Fasciola hepatica that achieved 65% survival of juvenile fluke after 6 months in standard cell culture medium supplemented with 50% chicken serum. We discovered that this long-term maintenance was dependent upon fluke growth, which was supported by increased proliferation of cells resembling the "neoblast" stem cells described in other flatworms. Growth led to dramatic morphological changes in juveniles, including the development of the digestive tract, reproductive organs and the tegument, towards more adult-like forms. The inhibition of DNA synthesis prevented neoblast-like cell proliferation and inhibited growth/development. Supporting our assertion that we have triggered the development of juveniles towards adult-like fluke, mass spectrometric analyses showed that growing fluke have an excretory/secretory protein profile that is distinct from that of newly-excysted juveniles and more closely resembles that of ex vivo immature and adult fluke. Further, in vitro maintained fluke displayed a transition in their movement from the probing behaviour associated with migrating stage worms to a slower wave-like motility seen in adults. Our ability to stimulate neoblast-like cell proliferation and growth in F. hepatica underpins the first simple platform for their long-term in vitro study, complementing the recent expansion in liver fluke resources and facilitating in vitro target validation studies of the developmental biology of liver fluke

    Lipoprotein Particle Profiles Mark Familial and Sporadic Human Longevity

    BACKGROUND: Genetic and biochemical studies have indicated an important role for lipid metabolism in human longevity. Ashkenazi Jewish centenarians and their offspring have large low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) particles as compared with control individuals. This profile also coincided with a lower prevalence of disease. Here, we investigate whether this observation can be confirmed for familial longevity in an outbred European population and whether it can be extended to sporadic longevity in the general population. METHODS AND FINDINGS: NMR-measured lipoprotein profiles were analyzed in 165 families from the Leiden Longevity Study, consisting of 340 long-lived siblings (females >91 y, males >89 y), 511 of their offspring, and 243 partners of the offspring. Offspring had larger (21.3 versus 21.1 nm; p = 0.020) and fewer (1,470 versus 1,561 nmol/l; p = 0.011) LDL particles than their same-aged partners. This effect was even more prominent in the long-lived siblings (p < 10(−3)) and could be pinpointed to a reduction specifically in the concentration of small LDL particles. No differences were observed for HDL particle phenotypes. The mean LDL particle sizes in 259 90-y-old singletons from a population-based study were similar to those in the long-lived siblings and thus significantly larger than in partners of the offspring, suggesting that the relevance of this phenotype extends beyond familial longevity. A low concentration of small LDL particles was associated with better overall health among both long-lived siblings (p = 0.003) and 90-y-old singletons (p = 0.007). CONCLUSIONS: Our study indicates that LDL particle profiles mark both familial and sporadic human longevity already in middle age

    What's the effect of the implementation of general practitioner cooperatives on caseload? Prospective intervention study on primary and secondary care

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Out-of-hours care in the primary care setting is rapidly changing and evolving towards general practitioner 'cooperatives' (GPC). GPCs already exist in the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Scandinavia, all countries with strong general practice, including gatekeepers' role. This intervention study reports the use and caseload of out-of-hours care before and after implementation of a GPC in a well subscribed region in a country with an open access health care system and no gatekeepers' role for general practice.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We used a prospective before/after interventional study design. The intervention was the implementation of a GPC.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>One year after the implementation of a GPC, the number of patient contacts in the intervention region significantly increased at the GPC (OR: 1.645; 95% CI: 1.439-1.880), while there were no significant changes in patient contacts at the Emergency Department (ED) or in other regions where a simultaneous registration was performed. Although home visits decreased in all general practitioner registrations, the difference was more pronounced in the intervention region (intervention region: OR: 0.515; 95% CI: 0.411-0.646, other regions: OR: 0.743; 95% CI: 0.608-0.908). At the ED we observed a decrease in the number of trauma cases (OR: 0.789; 95% CI: 0.648-0.960) and of patients who came to hospital by ambulance (OR: 0.687; 95% CI: 0.565-0.836).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>One year after its implementation more people seek help at the GPC, while the number of contacts at the ED remains the same. The most prominent changes in caseload are found in the trauma cases. Establishing a GPC in an open health care system, might redirect some patients with particular medical problems to primary care. This could lead to a lowering of costs or a more cost-effective out of hours care, but further research should focus on effective usage to divert patient flows and on quality and outcome of care.</p
