    A Study on Developing Special Teaching Methods Attitude Scale for Pre-service Music Teachers

    The objective of the current study is to develop an attitude scale for pre-service music teachers’ special teaching methods course. The data of the research was obtained in the spring semester of the 2017-2018 academic year. The study group consists of 388 pre-service music teachers who continue their education at eight universities in Turkey. Before proceeding to further analysis, the missing values and outliers were processed. As a result, mean substitution was performed for the missing data in the dataset and 2 participants with outliers were excluded from the study. The suitability of the data for factor analysis was determined by running the Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin and Bartlett’s Test of Sphericity. Result of the Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin (KMO) value was found to be 0.97. The overall internal consistency coefficient (Cronbach’s Alpha) of the single-factor and 58 item-scale was determined to be 0.98

    The Relationship between Music Teacher Candidates’ Academic and General Procrastination Tendencies and Test Anxiety

    Today, entrepreneurship has gained great importance, especially with the transition from industrial society to information society. Therefore, in order to ensure economic and social development of societies, entrepreneurship must comprehensively be supported, encouraged and entrepreneurship education has to be provided. Many similar qualities and skills among individuals having reflective thinking abilities and entrepreneurial individuals arise when reflective thinking, one of the higher-level thinking skills, is defined as the cognitive inquiry that will lead the individual to produce new knowledge and develop alternative ways. The purpose of this research is to identify whether physical education and sports teachers' reflective thinking themes predict entrepreneurial characteristics. Research is designed in accordance with the relational screening model. Semerci (2007), “Reflective Thinking Tendency Scale” and Yilmaz and Sunbul (2009), “Entrepreneurship Scale for University Students” were used as data collection tool. Multilevel regression analysis was benefitted in the analyze of the data.  As a result of this research, it is determined that effective and interrogated teaching sub-dimension was the most independent variable contributing to the entrepreneurial characteristics of physical education and sports pre-service teachers and this was followed by continuous and intentional thinking, responsibility of teaching and science and looking professional sub-dimensions. It has also been determined that sub-dimensions such as open-mindedness, foresighted and sincere and researcher do not make a meaningful contribution to the prediction of entrepreneurial characteristics. Based on these results, it can be said that a pre-service teacher with high entrepreneurial characteristics will have higher reflective thinking tendencies. Besides, it is also possible to analyze how thinking skills such as critical thinking, creative thinking, problem solving and supra-cognitive thinking predict entrepreneurial characteristics

    Türkiye’de doğrudan yabancı sermaye girişlerinde özelleştirme hareketlerinin hız kazanmaya başladığı 1990’lı yılların ortalarından itibaren gözle görülür artışlar yaşanmaya başlamıştır. Özellikle 2000’li yıllardan itibaren bu artışlar rekor seviyelerde gerçekleşmeye başlamıştır. Çalışmamızda ülkemize gelen bu yabancı yatırımların ekonomik büyüme üzerine bıraktığı etkiler incelenmiştir. Doğrudan yabancı sermaye yatırımları ile ekonomik büyüme değişkenleri arasındaki ilişki Türkiye açısından 1995: 1 ile 2007: 9 arası aylık verileri kullanılarak ilk olarak değişkenler birim kök analizine tabi tutulmuş ve birinci dereceden farkları alınarak seriler birim kökten arındırılmıştır. Daha sonra sekiz gecikmeli VAR modeli tahmin edilerek, ekonomik büyüme ve doğrudan yabancı yatırımların birbirlerini pozitif yönde etkiledikleri sonuncuna ulaşılmıştır. Bir sonraki adımda eşbütünleşme analizi gerçekleştirilerek söz konusu iki değişkenin uzun dönemde birlikte hareket ettikleri saptanmıştır. Granger nedensellik testi sonucunda ortaya çıkan bulgulara göre doğrudan yabancı sermaye yatırımlarından ekonomik büyümeye doğru olmak üzere tek taraflı bir nedensellik ilişkisi olduğu gözlemlenmiştir. Etki – tepki analiziyle de söz konusu iki değişkende meydana gelebilecek artışların birbirlerini pozitif yönde etkileyecekleri ortaya konulmuş ve son olarak varyans ayrıştırması metoduyla büyüme ile doğrudan yabancı sermaye yatırımlarında meydana gelen artışların birbirlerini açıklama gücü ortaya konulmuştur. Buna göre her iki değişken de birbirini açıklama gücüne sahip olmakla birlikte ekonomik büyümede meydana gelen artış durumunda doğrudan yabancı sermaye faktörünün payı, doğrudan yabancı sermaye yatırımlarında yaşanan artışlar içerisindeki ekonomik büyüme faktörünün payından daha belirgin nitelikte ortaya çıkmıştır

    TĂśBÄ°TAK MAG Proje01.04.2014In this study, strong magnetic featured silica coated Cobalt ferrite (CoFe204) nanoparticles were labeled with 2-deoxy glucose (2-DG) for better targetting to cancer cells and the molecular effects of these prepared magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) were investigated in cancer cell lines. In this study, in vitro characterization of 2-DG labelled MNPs were carried out in breast cancer cells (MDA-MB-231 breast cancer and normal cell MCF10A), and cellular uptake mechanisms, genotoxicity, intracellular levels of oxidative stress and stress-related autophagic, apoptotic pathways, mRNA expression profiles of some key genes in different biological pathways were studied. Further development of multifunctional different carrier systems for cancer teraphies with nanotechnological view is one of the popular and privileged area. Thus, the information obtained in this study will contribute to create new therapeutic strategies and to set ground to new studies

    Out of the Rock? Terracotta Figurines from Sagalassos in the Sadberk Hanım Museum in Istanbul

    The contextualization of figurines that have been acquired by museums and that lack appropriate archaeological documentation is a growing trend in coroplastic research. This paper contributes to this trend by trying to reconstruct the context of some of the terracotta figurines kept at the Sadberk Hanım Museum in Istanbul. These objects could be identified as products of the coroplasts of Sagalassos (SW Turkey). What is more, there are several indications that suggest an exact origin for these figurines in a recently excavated cult site situated in the periphery of the Pisidian city. This in turn allows us to restore some of the social meaning of the terracottas and once again make them informative of the people that used them

    Povezanost percepcije društvene podrške i samoučinkovitosti kod učenika osnovnih škola u Turskoj

    Positive power is very important for adolescents\u27 physical and mental health. The sample for the study was composed of a total of 760 students in the 6th, 7th and 8th grades from 7 elementary schools. The sociodemographic data form, the “Child-Adolescent Social Support Scale” (CASSS) for measuring the social support perceived and the “Middle School Self-efficacy Scale” for measuring self-efficacy were used. This study was conducted to examine the relationship between the social support perceived and elementary school students\u27 self-efficacy and the variables that influence perceived social support and self-efficacy. A positive relationship was determined between the CASSS and point averages on the sub-scales, the Middle School Self-efficacy Scale and the sub-scales of the students (p<0.001). It was established that the perceived social support in adolescents has affected their self-efficacy skills. It is recommended that professionals dealing with adolescent health should guide the adolescents by using social support and health self-efficacy on gaining skills for health protection, promotion and to take over the responsibility of their own health.Vrlo je važno da adolescenti imaju pozitivan utjecaj na vlastito fizičko i mentalno zdravlje. Uzorak u istraživanju činilo je 760 učenika u šestom, sedmom i osmom razredu iz sedam osnovnih škola. U istraživanju su upotrijebljeni društveno-demografski podaci iz obrasca Skale CASS (Child-Adolscent Social Support Scale) za mjerenje percepcije društvene podrške i Skale za mjerenje samoučinkovitosti za više razrede osnovne škole (Middle School Self-efficacy Scale). Istraživanje je provedeno kako bi se istražila povezanost percepcije društvene podrške i samoučinkovitosti učenika u osnovnoj školi i varijabla koje utječu na percepciju društvene podrške i samoučinkovitost. Pozitivan odnos uočen je između Skale CASS i prosječnih bodova podskala, kao i Skale za mjerenje samoučinkovitosti u višim razredima i podskala za učenike (p<0.001). Zaključeno je da je percepcija društvene podrške kod adolescenata utjecala na njihove vještine samoučinkovitosti. Preporuča se da stručnjaci koji se bave zdravljem adolescenata vode svoje adolescente koristeći se društvenom podrškom i zdravom samoučinkovitošću kako bi stekli vještine zaštite zdravlja, promidžbe zdravoga života i odgovornosti za vlastito zdravlje

    Several different charge transfer and Ce3+ localization scenarios for Rh–CeO2(111)

    We present DFT+U based electronic structure calculations in a p(3x3) slab supercell, for low coverages of atomically dispersed Rh interacting with the CeO2(111) surface, comparing Rh as an adatom, and as a dopant substituted into the surface layer. We find that, energetically, a Rh atom approaching a ceria(111) surface with both sparse O and Ce vacancies present strongly prefers to heal the Ce vacancies, but next it prefers to adsorb on a stoichiometric region rather than healing an O vacancy. In the adatom system, Rh is oxidized by electron transfer to a 4f orbital on one Ce ion in the surface layer, which is then nominally converted from Ce4+ → Ce3+ (i.e. Rh adatoms are single donors). We show that there are a number of different local minima, with Ce3+ localization at 1st, 2nd or 3rd nearest neighbour Ce sites. The second neighbour is the most stable, but all are close in energy. In the Rh-doped system (Rh replaces Ce), Rh is oxidized by charge transfer to neighbouring O atoms, and Rh doping leads to deep acceptor and donor states. Rh is not stable in the O sublattice. Moreover, based on vacancy formation energies, we find that oxygen vacancy formation is strongly enhanced in the vicinity of Rh dopants, but slightly suppressed in the vicinity of Rh adatoms

    Pseudomonas aeruginosa Pili and Flagella Mediate Distinct Binding and Signaling Events at the Apical and Basolateral Surface of Airway Epithelium

    Pseudomonas aeruginosa, an important opportunistic pathogen of man, exploits numerous factors for initial attachment to the host, an event required to establish bacterial infection. In this paper, we rigorously explore the role of two major bacterial adhesins, type IV pili (Tfp) and flagella, in bacterial adherence to distinct host receptors at the apical (AP) and basolateral (BL) surfaces of polarized lung epithelial cells and induction of subsequent host signaling and pathogenic events. Using an isogenic mutant of P. aeruginosa that lacks flagella or utilizing beads coated with purified Tfp, we establish that Tfp are necessary and sufficient for maximal binding to host N-glycans at the AP surface of polarized epithelium. In contrast, experiments utilizing a P. aeruginosa isogenic mutant that lacks Tfp or using beads coated with purified flagella demonstrate that flagella are necessary and sufficient for maximal binding to heparan sulfate (HS) chains of heparan sulfate proteoglycans (HSPGs) at the BL surface of polarized epithelium. Using two different cell-free systems, we demonstrate that Tfp-coated beads show highest binding affinity to complex N-glycan chains coated onto plastic plates and preferentially aggregate with beads coated with N-glycans, but not with single sugars or HS. In contrast, flagella-coated beads bind to or aggregate preferentially with HS or HSPGs, but demonstrate little binding to N-glycans. We further show that Tfp-mediated binding to host N-glycans results in activation of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)/Akt pathway and bacterial entry at the AP surface. At the BL surface, flagella-mediated binding to HS activates the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), adaptor protein Shc, and PI3K/Akt, and induces bacterial entry. Remarkably, flagella-coated beads alone can activate EGFR and Shc. Together, this work provides new insights into the intricate interactions between P. aeruginosa and lung epithelium that may be potentially useful in the development of novel treatments for P. aeruginosa infections

    Hippocampal CA3 Transcriptome Signature Correlates with Initial Precipitating Injury in Refractory Mesial Temporal Lobe Epilepsy

    Background: Prolonged febrile seizures constitute an initial precipitating injury (IPI) commonly associated with refractory mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (RMTLE). in order to investigate IPI influence on the transcriptional phenotype underlying RMTLE we comparatively analyzed the transcriptomic signatures of CA3 explants surgically obtained from RMTLE patients with (FS) or without (NFS) febrile seizure history. Texture analyses on MRI images of dentate gyrus were conducted in a subset of surgically removed sclerotic hippocampi for identifying IPI-associated histo-radiological alterations.Methodology/Principal Findings: DNA microarray analysis revealed that CA3 global gene expression differed significantly between FS and NFS subgroups. An integrative functional genomics methodology was used for characterizing the relations between GO biological processes themes and constructing transcriptional interaction networks defining the FS and NFS transcriptomic signatures and its major gene-gene links (hubs). Co-expression network analysis showed that: i) CA3 transcriptomic profiles differ according to the IPI; ii) FS distinctive hubs are mostly linked to glutamatergic signalization while NFS hubs predominantly involve GABAergic pathways and neurotransmission modulation. Both networks have relevant hubs related to nervous system development, what is consistent with cell genesis activity in the hippocampus of RMTLE patients. Moreover, two candidate genes for therapeutic targeting came out from this analysis: SSTR1, a relevant common hub in febrile and afebrile transcriptomes, and CHRM3, due to its putative role in epilepsy susceptibility development. MRI texture analysis allowed an overall accuracy of 90% for pixels correctly classified as belonging to FS or NFS groups. Histological examination revealed that granule cell loss was significantly higher in FS hippocampi.Conclusions/Significance: CA3 transcriptional signatures and dentate gyrus morphology fairly correlate with IPI in RMTLE, indicating that FS-RMTLE represents a distinct phenotype. These findings may shed light on the molecular mechanisms underlying refractory epilepsy phenotypes and contribute to the discovery of novel specific drug targets for therapeutic interventions
