    A full-term, 2-day-old female neonate with a congenital non-tender reticular patch that did not disappear with local warming was referred to our department for consultation. The family history as well as the antenatal course and delivery were unremarkable. On examination, we evidenced a fixed, marbled, bluish to deep purple lesion with a fishnet appearance extending over the right side of her body, face, and scalp. There was presence of atrophy of the involved skin, along with ulceration above the right lateral malleolus. Upon blanching, the lesions could not be emptied completely

    Multiple Primary Melanomas in a Young Patient

    A 45-year-old HIV-negative Caucasian man with no reported past medical history was referred to our Department with a large (7 cm in diameter) oozing nodule on the occipital region of the scalp with spontaneous periodical bloody or purulent discharge. The lesion had appeared over a period of six months, had an irregular color, non-specific dermoscopic features, and resembled squamous cell carcinoma. The physical examination revealed three more atypical melanocytic lesions (on the abdomen, back, and buccal mucosa), and multiple swollen occipital, postauricular, as well as superficial and deep cervical lymph nodes. After clinical evaluation, the patient reported having another in situ melanoma (submammary region) excised 7 years ago. All the lesions were excised and sent for histopathologic examination, which was compatible with primary cutaneous melanoma. Total body computed tomography revealed the presence of multiple visceral metastases, and the patient was referred to an oncologist. He did not consent to proceed to genetic testing

    Acid-fast bacteria as causative agents of skin and soft tissue infections: case presentations and literature review

    Acid-fast bacteria can be implicated in skin and soft tissue infections. Diagnostic identification can be challenging or not feasible by routine laboratory techniques, especially if there is no access to the Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) technology. Here, we present two cases of skin and soft tissue infections caused by two different acid-fast bacteria, Nocardia brasiliensis and Mycobacterium marinum. They both grew on Löwenstein–Jensen medium, Sabouraud agar medium and blood agar medium. Both bacteria appeared acid-fast by Ziehl–Neelsen stain and Gram-positive by Gram stain. The identification was performed by MALDI-TOF MS and gene analysis. N. brasiliensis and nontuberculous mycobacterium M. marinum represent rare pathogens that cause severe skin and soft tissue infections. Failure to identify the causative agent and subsequent inappropriate or inadequate treatment may lead to severe complications or even disseminated disease, especially in immunocompromised individuals

    Oxidative Thermal Sintering and Redispersion of Rh Nanoparticles on Supports with High Oxygen Ion Lability

    The thermal sintering under oxidative conditions of Rh nanoparticles supported on oxides characterized by very different oxygen storage capacities (OSC) and labilities was studied at 750 and 850 °C. Under sintering conditions, significant particle growth occurred for Rh/γ-Al2O3 (up to 120% at 850 °C). In striking contrast, Rh/ACZ (alumina–ceria–zirconia) and Rh/CZ (ceria–zirconia) exhibited marked resistance to sintering, and even moderate (ca. −10% at 850 °C) to pronounced (ca. −60% at 850 °C) redispersion of the Rh. A model is proposed based on a double-layer description of metal–support interactions assigned to back-spillover of labile oxygen ions onto the Rh particles, accompanied by trapping of atomic Rh by the resulting surface oxygen vacancies. This model accounts for the observed resistance to sintering and actual redispersion of Rh, consistent with both alternative sintering mechanisms, namely Ostwald ripening (OR) or particle migration and coalescence (PMC)

    Effect of support oxygen storage capacity on the catalytic performance of Rh nanoparticles for CO2 reforming of methane

    The effects of the metal oxide support on the activity, selectivity, resistance to carbon deposition and high temperature oxidative aging on the Rh-catalyzed dry reforming of methane (DRM) were investigated. Three Rh catalysts supported on oxides characterized by very different oxygen storage capacities and labilities (γ-Al 2O 3, alumina-ceria-zirconia (ACZ) and ceria-zirconia (CZ)) were studied in the temperature interval 400–750 °C under both integral and differential reaction conditions. ACZ and CZ promoted CO 2 conversion, yielding CO-enriched synthesis gas. Detailed characterization of these materials, including state of the art XPS measurements obtained via sample transfer between reaction cell and spectrometer chamber, provided clear insight into the factors that determine catalytic performance. The principal Rh species detected by post reaction XPS was Rh 0, its relative content decreasing in the order Rh/CZ(100%)>Rh/ACZ(72%)>Rh/γ-Al 2O 3(55%). The catalytic activity followed the same order, demonstrating unambiguously that Rh 0 is indeed the key active site. Moreover, the presence of CZ in the support served to maintain Rh in the metallic state and minimize carbon deposition under reaction conditions. Carbon deposition, low in all cases, increased in the order Rh/CZ < Rh/ACZ < Rh/γ-Al 2O 3 consistent with a bi-functional reaction mechanism whereby backspillover of labile lattice O 2− contributes to carbon oxidation, stabilization of Rh 0 and modification of its surface chemistry; the resulting O vacancies in the support providing centers for dissociative adsorption of CO 2. The lower apparent activation energy observed with CZ-containing samples suggests that CZ is a promising support component for use in low temperature DRM

    Implementing frailty assessment into a healthcare system: a clinical opinion paper.

    Frailty is a multifactorial medical syndrome characterized by reduced endurance and decreased physiological ability. The aim of this narrative literature review is to present the frailty diagnostic instruments that are already used in most Western countries and provide recommendations for use in clinical practice. Among the numerous available frailty instruments identified in current literature, the Frailty Index and the Physical Frailty Phenotype are most commonly used. There are large differences in each instrument design, ease of use by healthcare teams and also significant heterogeneity in the design of the studies based on these instruments. Therefore, future studies should be designed to properly address the discrepancy in the comparison of the existent instruments and consider their validity and feasibility of implementation in different healthcare settings with different healthcare providers
