This record orders the selection of jurors from the good and lawful men of Worcester to serve on the Grand Jury and Petit Jury at the Court of General Sessions of the Peace. February 15, 1765. On the verso a handwritten notice enumerates the men chosen for each jury.https://digitalcommons.wofford.edu/littlejohnmss/1294/thumbnail.jp

Further Studies on Vibration Compaction of Cohesive Soils

    Get PDF
The investigations described in this report are a continuation of previous work designed to determine the basic laws governing the compaction of cohesive soil by vibration. A report dated December, 1954, described the results of tests on sandy loam, while this report describes similar tests on a much more cohesive soil

CEO pay, shareholder returns, and accounting profits

    Get PDF
We assess the impact on CEO pay (including salary, cash bonus, and benefits in kind) of changes in both accounting and shareholder returns in 99 British companies in the years 1972-89. After correcting for heterogeneity biases inherent in the standard specifications of the problem, we find a strong positive relationship between CEO pay and within-company changes in shareholder returns, and no statistically significant relationship between CEO pay and within-company changes in accounting returns. Differences between firms in long-term average profitability do appear to have a substantial effect on CEO pay, while differences between firms in shareholder returns add nothing to the within-firm pay dynamics. These findings call into question the rationale for explicitly share-based incentive schemes

An Exchange-Coulomb Model Potential Energy Surface for the Ne-CO Interaction. I. Calculation of Ne-CO van der Waals Spectra

    Get PDF
Exchange-Coulomb model potential energy surfaces have been developed for the Ne–CO interaction. The initial model is a three-dimensional potential energy surface based upon computed Heitler–London interaction energies and literature results for the long-range induction and dispersion energies, all as functions of interspecies distance, the orientation of CO relative to the interspecies axis, and the bond length of the CO molecule. Both a rigid-rotor model potential energy surface, obtained by setting the CO bond length equal to its experimental spectroscopic equilibrium value, and a vibrationally averaged model potential energy surface, obtained by averaging the stretching dependence over the ground vibrational motion of the CO molecule, have been constructed from the full data set. Adjustable parameters in each model potential energy surface have been determined through fitting a selected subset of pure rotational transition frequencies calculated for the 20Ne-12C12O isotopolog to precisely known experimental values. Both potential energy surfaces provide calculated results for a wide range of available experimental microwave, millimeter-wave, and midinfrared Ne–CO transition frequencies that are generally far superior to those obtained using the best current literature potential energy surfaces. The vibrationally averaged CO ground state potential energy surface, employed together with a potential energy surface obtained from it by replacing the ground vibrational state average of the CO stretching dependence of the potential energy surface by an average over the first excited CO vibrational state, has been found to be particularly useful for computing and/or interpreting mid-IR transition frequencies in the Ne–CO dimer

A genome-wide data assessment of the African lion (Panthera leo) population genetic structure and diversity in Tanzania

The African lion (Panthera leo), listed as a vulnerable species on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (Appendix II of CITES), is mainly impacted by indiscriminate killing and prey base depletion. Additionally, habitat loss by land degradation and conversion has led to the isolation of some subpopulations, potentially decreasing gene flow and increasing inbreeding depression risks. Genetic drift resulting from weakened connectivity between strongholds can affect the genetic health of the species. In the present study, we investigated the evolutionary history of the species at different spatiotemporal scales. Therefore, the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene (N = 128), 11 microsatellites (N = 103) and 9,103 SNPs (N = 66) were investigated in the present study, including a large sampling from Tanzania, which hosts the largest lion population among all African lion range countries. Our results add support that the species is structured into two lineages at the continental scale (West-Central vs East-Southern), underlining the importance of reviewing the taxonomic status of the African lion. Moreover, SNPs led to the identification of three lion clusters in Tanzania, whose geographical distributions are in the northern, southern and western regions. Furthermore, Tanzanian lion populations were shown to display good levels of genetic diversity with limited signs of inbreeding. However, their population sizes seem to have gradually decreased in recent decades. The highlighted Tanzanian African lion population genetic differentiation appears to have resulted from the combined effects of anthropogenic pressure and environmental/climatic factors, as further discussed
