    Comment on "Scalar-tensor gravity coupled to a global monopole and flat rotation curves" by Lee and Lee

    The recent paper by Lee and Lee (2004) may strongly leave the impression that astronomers have established that the rotation curves of spiral galaxies are flat. We show that the old paradigm of Flat Rotation Curves lacks, today, any observational support and following it at face value leads to intrinsically flawed alternatives to the Standard Dark Matter Scenario. On the other side, we claim that the rich systematics of spiral galaxy rotation curves, that reveals, in the standard Newtonian Gravity framework, the phenomenon of dark matter, in alternative scenarios, works as a unique benchmark.Comment: 3 pages, 2 figures, accepted in Phys.     Power computation for the triboelectric nanogenerator

    We consider, from a mathematical perspective, the power generated by a contact-mode triboelectric nanogenerator, an energy harvesting device that has been well studied recently. We encapsulate the behaviour of the device in a differential equation, which although linear and of first order, has periodic coefficients, leading to some interesting mathematical problems. In studying these, we derive approximate forms for the mean power generated and the current waveforms, and describe a procedure for computing the Fourier coefficients for the current, enabling us to show how the power is distributed over the harmonics. Comparisons with accurate numerics validate our analysis

    A comparison of two-coloured filter systems for treating visual reading difficulties

    Copyright @ 2013 Informa UK Ltd.Purpose: Visual disturbances that make it difficult to read text are often termed “visual stress”. Coloured filters in spectacles may help some children overcome reading problems that are often caused by visual stress. It has been suggested that for optimal effect each child requires an individually prescribed colour for each eye, as determined in systems such as the “Harris Foundation” coloured filters. Alternatively, it has been argued that only blue or yellow filters, as used in the “Dyslexia Research Trust” (DRT) filter system, are necessary to affect the underlying physiology. Method: A randomised, double blind trial with 73 delayed readers, was undertaken to compare changes in reading and spelling as well as irregular and non-word reading skills after 3 months of wearing either the Harris or the DRT filters. Results: Reading improved significantly after wearing either type of filter (t = −8.4, p < 0.01), with 40% of the children improving their reading age by 6 months or more during the 3 month trial. However, spelling ability (t = 2.1, p = 0.05) and non-word reading (f = 4.7, p < 0.05) improved significantly more with the DRT than with the Harris filters. Conclusion: Education and rehabilitation professionals should therefore, consider coloured filters as an effective intervention for delayed readers experiencing visual stress

    Abdominal nodal localization of Castleman's disease: report of a case.

    Abstract Introduction Castleman's disease (CD) is a rare benign disorder that may grow in any area where lymphoid tissue is normally present but the most frequent site is mediastinum (67%); the abdomen is rarely affected by this pathology. In the pathogenesis of CD an important role could be played by HHV-8. Diagnosis is difficult and the diagnostic certainty is obtained only by histological examination. For this disease there is no gold-standard treatment. Case report We report the case of a woman of 33 years of age affected by a rare form of abdominal nodal localization of Castleman's Disease for which the patient underwent surgery. Conclusion CD must be included in the differential diagnosis of retroperitoneal tumors even though the definitive diagnosis can only be achieved by histological and immunohistochemical examination. In the case of single location, the treatment of choice is surgical removal

    A seismic vulnerability analysis of a multi-span simply supported bridge is often based on the seismic response of the most critical pier. This response is influenced by different collapse modes (flexural, shear, second order effects, lap-splice of longitudinal bars or their buckling). Among these the flexural behaviour is important and it's known if the equivalent plastic hinge length and the Moment-Curvature law of the fixed end are given. This paper provides a closed-form dimensionless solution to obtain a 5 point Moment-Curvature diagram for circular RC section. The solution is based only on three parameters: dimensionless axial force, mechanical percentage of longitudinal reinforcement, geometrical percentage of transversal reinforcement. A numerical example is presented to test the solution comparing it with a FEM analysis
