Observational evidence for a connection between SMBHs and dark matter haloes
We investigate the relation between circular velocity vc and bulge velocity
dispersion sigma in spiral galaxies, based on literature data and new
spectroscopic observations. We find a strong, nearly linear vc-sigma
correlation with a negligible intrinsic scatter, and a striking agreement with
the corresponding relation for elliptical galaxies. The least massive galaxies
(sigma < 80 km/s) significantly deviate from this relation. We combine this
vc-sigma correlation with the well-known MBH-sigma relation to obtain a tight
correlation between circular velocity and supermassive black hole mass, and
interpret this as observational evidence for a close link between supermassive
black holes and the dark matter haloes in which they presumably formed. Apart
from being an important ingredient for theoretical models of galaxy formation
and evolution, the relation between MBH and circular velocity has the potential
to become an important practical tool in estimating supermassive black hole
masses in spiral galaxies.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, to appear in "The Interplay among Black Holes,

HALOGAS: HI Observations and Modeling of the Nearby Edge-on Spiral Galaxy NGC 4565
We present 21-cm observations and models of the neutral hydrogen in NGC 4565,
a nearby, edge-on spiral galaxy, as part of the Westerbork Hydrogen Accretion
in LOcal GAlaxieS (HALOGAS) survey. These models provide insight concerning
both the morphology and kinematics of HI above, as well as within, the disk.
NGC 4565 exhibits a distinctly warped and asymmetric disk with a flaring layer.
Our modeling provides no evidence for a massive, extended HI halo. We see
evidence for a bar and associated radial motions. Additionally, there are
indications of radial motions within the disk, possibly associated with a ring
of higher density. We see a substantial decrease in rotational velocity with
height above the plane of the disk (a lag) of -40 +5/-20 km/s/kpc and -30
+5/-30 km s/kpc in the approaching and receding halves, respectively. This lag
is only seen within the inner ~4.75' (14.9 kpc) on the approaching half and
~4.25' (13.4 kpc) on the receding, making this a radially shallowing lag, which
is now seen in the HI layers of several galaxies. When comparing results for
NGC 4565 and those for other galaxies, there are tentative indications of high
star formation rate per unit area being associated with the presence of a halo.
Finally, HI is found in two companion galaxies, one of which is clearly
interacting with NGC 4565.Comment: 17 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical

Examining the Associations Between Experiences of Perceived Racism and Drug and Alcohol Use in Aboriginal Australians
ObjectiveThis study aimed to explore the relationships between experiences of perceived racism, mental health and drug and alcohol use among Aboriginal Australians.
MethodSixty-two Aboriginal Australians, ranging in age from 19-64 years (Mage = 33.71, SD = 12.47) and residing in Victoria completed an online questionnaire containing measures of perceived racism, alcohol use, substance use and mental health.
ResultsFirst, 66% of the sample reported experiencing interpersonal racism, with the highest proportion of reported experiences occurring in health settings, educational/academic settings and by staff of government agencies. Second, perceived racism was significantly associated with poorer mental health and well-being. Finally, while perceived racism was not significantly associated with substance use, there was an indirect pathway from perceived racism to substance use through mental health concerns.
ConclusionsThe current research indicates that racism is still frequently experienced by Aboriginal Australians and is directly associated with poorer mental health, and indirectly with substance use through poorer mental health. The findings demonstrate a clear need for further research in this area

Investigation of Genes That May Be Required for the Predictive Ability of the Phsp-16.2::GFP Reporter
In Caenorhabditis elegans expression of the fluorescent reporter (Phsp-16.2::GFP) is driven by transcription of a stress-responsive promoter sequence and has been shown to predict subsequent stress resistance (thermotolerance) and lifespan of individual animals within an isogenic population (Rea et al., 2005). The mechanism behind the predictive nature of this reporter is poorly understood. To better understand how this reporter works, stress-responsive genes were examined to determine if they were required for the ability of the reporter to predict thermotolerance or lifespan. Animals that had low or high expression of the Phsp-16.2::GFP reporter and contained loss-of-function mutations in select stress-responsive genes were tested to determine whether the animals with higher expression of the reporter still had improved thermotolerance or lifespan. The results revealed that none of the tested stress-responsive genes were necessary for the predictive power of the reporter. In some mutants, the reporter maintained its predictive ability even though the overall thermotolerance was greatly reduced. This implies that the predictive ability of the reporter is not linked to the stress resistance (thermotolerance) of the animal, as originally expected
Fil: Rodríguez, Elsa Mirta M. Gonadal Development in European Eel Populations of North Adriatic Lagoons at Different Silvering Stages
The European eel (Anguilla anguilla, Linnaeus 1758) is a catadromous fish with significant cultural, scientific, and commercial value. The protection of this species is particularly difficult because the biology of the eel life cycle remains unknown in many aspects. The European eel (A. anguilla) population has declined alarmingly over the past 30 years; this condition has led to questions about the long-term welfare of this species. This work aims to perform a histological analysis on gonad samples from European eels coming from four different lagoons of the North Adriatic at different stages of silvering, and to evaluate the maturation of the gonads. For this study, a total of 859 wild eels were captured from four different lagoons using the “lavoriero”. Subsequently, the biometric parameters were collected. Seventy-nine female eels were randomly selected, dissected, and the gonads were removed for histological analysis. Sections of 4 m were cut and stained with hematoxylin and eosin (H&E). Histological observations of germ cells at the light microscopy level allowed for the characterization of six steps of oocyte maturation. Valle di Comacchio had the highest levels of oocyte maturation, while Valle Ca’ Pasta had the lowest. Eels with silver index III had an oocyte maturation nearly equal to that of eels at stages IV and V of silvering. Considering the results, we can affirm that eels from North Adriatic lagoons have high oocyte maturation levels and high GSI value indices at silvering stage III. The following experimental work shows that the levels of oocyte maturation are higher even at lower silver index levels. It can be hypothesized that in these eels, the transition from yellow to silver eel occurs faster in relation to the high trophic availability in North Adriatic lagoons

HALOGAS: HI Observations and Modeling of the Nearby Edge-on Spiral Galaxy NGC 4244
We present 21-cm observations and models of the HI kinematics and
distribution of NGC 4244, a nearby edge-on Scd galaxy observed as part of the
Westerbork Hydrogen Accretion in LOcal GAlaxieS (HALOGAS) survey. Our models
give insight into the HI kinematics and distribution with an emphasis on the
potential existence of extra-planar gas as well as a negative gradient in
rotational velocity with height above the plane of the disk (a lag). Our models
yield strong evidence against a significantly extended halo and instead favor a
warp component along the line of sight as an explanation for some of the
observed thickening of the disk. Based on these models, we detect a lag of -9
+3/-2 km s-1 kpc-1 in the approaching half and -9 +/-2 km s-1 kpc-1 in the
receding half. This lag decreases in magnitude to -5+/-2 km s-1 kpc-1 and
-4+/-2 km s-1 kpc-1 near a radius of 10 kpc in the approaching and receding
halves respectively. Additionally, we detect several distinct morphological and
kinematic features including a shell that is probably driven by star formation
within the disk.Comment: 18 pages, 14 figures, Full resolution version may be found at:
