    Laser-heater assisted plasma channel formation in capillary discharge waveguides

    A method of creating plasma channels with controllable depth and transverse profile for the guiding of short, high power laser pulses for efficient electron acceleration is proposed. The plasma channel produced by the hydrogen-filled capillary discharge waveguide is modified by a ns-scale laser pulse, which heats the electrons near the capillary axis. This interaction creates a deeper plasma channel within the capillary discharge that evolves on a ns-time scale, allowing laser beams with smaller spot sizes than would otherwise be possible in the unmodified capillary discharge.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

    Seguimiento de poblaciones con baja densidad: una perspectiva de qué nivel de declive poblacional podemos detectar con certeza

    Monitoring of mammal species is an important part in detecting changes in their status. Efforts are based on a variety of direct and indirect methods and many low density populations are monitored through field signs. We present data on the endangered European red squirrel from Kidland Forest in the UK. We used cone transects to both record changes in seed availability and to monitor population trends. We examined the difficulty of accurately detecting population change when populations are low and field signs are patchily distributed. Current efforts would be sufficient to detect significant population declines of 50–75% in years with a modest squirrel population but not when they fall below one squirrel for every 20 ha of forest. The findings emphasise that monitoring aims have to be clearly defined with an awareness and understanding of what level of change the adopted methodological approach can reliably detect. We propose that mammal monitoring schemes need to be based on a pilot scheme to determine effect size and planned accordingly. Key words: Squirrel, Sciurus vulgaris, Conservation, Power analysis.El seguimiento de las especies de mamíferos es una parte importante de la detección de los cambios producidos en su estatus. Los esfuerzos van dirigidos hacia diversos métodos directos e indirectos, y muchas poblaciones que presentan una densidad baja se monitorizan mediante rastros o signos de campo. En este trabajo presentamos datos de una especie en peligro, la ardilla roja, del bosque de Kidland en el Reino Unido. Se realizaron transectos de detección de piñas o conos para registrar tanto los cambios en la disponibilidad de semillas como para monitorizar las tendencias de la población. Examinamos la dificultad que presenta detectar con precisión los cambios poblacionales, cuando las poblaciones son pequeñas y los restos alimentarios de presencia están distribuidos de forma desigual. Los esfuerzos normales deberían ser suficientes para detectar disminuciones poblacionales significativas del 50–75% en años con una población de ardillas modesta, pero no cuando la densidad está por debajo de una ardilla cada 20 ha de bosque. Nuestros hallazgos enfatizan que los esfuerzos de seguimiento deben estar claramente definidos, con el conocimiento y la comprensión de qué nivel de cambio puede realmente detectar de forma fiable el enfoque metodológico adoptado. Proponemos que los seguimientos de mamíferos deben estar basados en un esquema piloto, con el fin de determinar el efecto del tamaño, y ser planificados consecuentemente. Sixty images per second are displayed on a gray scale CRT in real-time and recorded on standard videotape for review.     The Collapse of Large Extra Dimensions

    In models of spacetime that are the product of a four-dimensional spacetime with an ``extra'' dimension, there is the possibility that the extra dimension will collapse to zero size, forming a singularity. We ask whether this collapse is likely to destroy the spacetime. We argue, by an appeal to the four-dimensional cosmic censorship conjecture, that--at least in the case when the extra dimension is homogeneous--such a collapse will lead to a singularity hidden within a black string. We also construct explicit initial data for a spacetime in which such a collapse is guaranteed to occur and show how the formation of a naked singularity is likely avoided.Comment: Uses revtex

    Large-scale Roll Out of Electronic Longitudinal Mood-Monitoring for Research in Affective Disorders: Report From the UK Bipolar Disorder Research Network

    Background Electronic longitudinal mood monitoring has been shown to be acceptable to patients with affective disorders within clinical settings, but its use in large-scale research has not yet been established. Methods Using both postal and email invitations, we invited 4080 past research participants with affective disorders who were recruited into the Bipolar Disorder Research Network (BDRN) over a 10 year period to participate in online weekly mood monitoring. In addition, since January 2015 we have invited all newly recruited BDRN research participants to participate in mood monitoring at the point they were recruited into BDRN. Results Online mood monitoring uptake among past participants was 20, and among new participants to date was 46 with participants recruited over the last year most likely to register (61). More than 90 mood monitoring participants engaged for at least one month, with mean engagement period greater than one year (58 weeks) and maximum engagement for longer than three years (165 weeks). There were no significant differences in the proportion of past and new BDRN participants providing data for at least 4 weeks (91, 92 respectively), 3 months (78, 82), 6 months (65, 54) or one year (51, 44). Limitations Our experiences with recruiting participants for electronic prospective mood monitoring may not necessarily generalise fully to research situations that are very different from those we describe. Conclusions Large-scale electronic longitudinal mood monitoring in affective disorders for research purposes is feasible with uptake highest among newly recruited participants

    Iterated Binomial Sums and their Associated Iterated Integrals

    We consider finite iterated generalized harmonic sums weighted by the binomial (2kk)\binom{2k}{k} in numerators and denominators. A large class of these functions emerges in the calculation of massive Feynman diagrams with local operator insertions starting at 3-loop order in the coupling constant and extends the classes of the nested harmonic, generalized harmonic and cyclotomic sums. The binomially weighted sums are associated by the Mellin transform to iterated integrals over square-root valued alphabets. The values of the sums for NN \rightarrow \infty and the iterated integrals at x=1x=1 lead to new constants, extending the set of special numbers given by the multiple zeta values, the cyclotomic zeta values and special constants which emerge in the limit NN \rightarrow \infty of generalized harmonic sums. We develop algorithms to obtain the Mellin representations of these sums in a systematic way. They are of importance for the derivation of the asymptotic expansion of these sums and their analytic continuation to NCN \in \mathbb{C}. The associated convolution relations are derived for real parameters and can therefore be used in a wider context, as e.g. for multi-scale processes. We also derive algorithms to transform iterated integrals over root-valued alphabets into binomial sums.
