Ariel 6 measurements of ultra-heavy cosmic ray fluxes in the region 34 or = Z or = 48

    Get PDF
The Ariel VI satellite was launched by NASA on a Scout rocket on 3rd June 1979 from Wallops Island, Virginia, USA, into a near circular 625 km orbit inclined at 55 deg. It carried a spherical cosmic ray detector designed by a group from Bristol University. A spherical aluminum vessel of diameter 75 cm contains a gas scintillation mixture and a thin spherical shell of Pilot 425 plastic, and forms a single optical cavity viewed by 16 photomultipliers. Particle tracks through the detector may be characterized by their impact parameter p and by whether or not they pass through the cup of plastic scintillator placed between the sphere and the spacecraft body (referred to below as the Anti-Coincidence Detector or ACD). Individual particle charges are determined by separately measuring the gas scintillation and the Cerenkov emission from the plastic shell. This is possible because of the quite different distribution in time of these emissions

Molekulare Signalwege der aseptischen Endoprothesenlockerung (Molecular pathways in aseptic loosening of orthopaedic endoprosthesis)

Abstract Operative joint replacement to treat disabling joint conditions secondary to degenerative and inflammatory arthritides has become one of the most efficacious and cost-effective procedures to relieve pain and restore joint function. However, prosthetic implants are not built to last forever and osteolysis and aseptic loosening has been associated with prosthetic arthroplasties since their introduction. The functional life of a synthetic joint is influenced by many factors including the material of the implant, operation procedures and the surgeon involved, as well as patient-related factors. Although promising developments have been achieved in this field, more than 10% of all implants still have to undergo operative revision within 15 years after the initial operation. Failure due to sepsis, fractures and dislocations has become rare; premature loosening of implants on the other hand is becoming much more important. Prosthetic loosening without concurrent infection or trauma is called aseptic loosening. It is generally accepted that small particles ("wear debris") and activated macrophages play a key role in aseptic loosening. The pathophysiology of this condition, however, is still not very well characterized. In this article, we review the molecular mechanisms and signal pathways that were unravelled as responsible factors for loosening orthopaedic implants. Finally, we discuss possible novel strategies for future therapeutic approaches

Tip cap for a rotor blade

    Get PDF
A replaceable tip cap for attachment to the end of a rotor blade is described. The tip cap includes a plurality of walls defining a compartment which, if desired, can be divided into a plurality of subcompartments. The tip cap can include inlet and outlet holes in walls thereof to permit fluid communication of a cooling fluid there through. Abrasive material can be attached with the radially outer wall of the tip cap

Non Gaussian extrema counts for CMB maps

In the context of the geometrical analysis of weakly non Gaussian CMB maps, the 2D differential extrema counts as functions of the excursion set threshold is derived from the full moments expansion of the joint probability distribution of an isotropic random field, its gradient and invariants of the Hessian. Analytic expressions for these counts are given to second order in the non Gaussian correction, while a Monte Carlo method to compute them to arbitrary order is presented. Matching count statistics to these estimators is illustrated on fiducial non-Gaussian "Planck" data.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur

Anisotropic elastic theory of preloaded granular media

A macroscopic elastic description of stresses in static, preloaded granular media is derived systematically from the microscopic elasticity of individual inter-grain contacts. The assumed preloaded state and friction at contacts ensure that the network of inter-grain contacts is not altered by small perturbations. The texture of this network, set by the preparation of the system, is encoded in second and fourth order fabric tensors. A small perturbation generates both normal and tangential inter-grain forces, the latter causing grains to reorient. This reorientation response and the incremental stress are expressed in terms of the macroscopic strain.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures. Accepted version. [email protected] [email protected]

    Un-reduction

This paper provides a full geometric development of a new technique called un-reduction, for dealing with dynamics and optimal control problems posed on spaces that are unwieldy for numerical implementation. The technique, which was originally concieved for an application to image dynamics, uses Lagrangian reduction by symmetry in reverse. A deeper understanding of un-reduction leads to new developments in image matching which serve to illustrate the mathematical power of the technique.Comment: 25 pages, revised versio

Control of sucker growth on Vitis vinifera cv. Merlot with NAA derivatives

    Get PDF
Six NAA esters (three known, three newly synthesized) were tested for the grapevine sucker control. Good results were achieved by E4, E5, E9 (8 % concentration) but E3 presented solubility problems. Suckering was reduced also in the second year, without repeating the treatment

Hybrid Session Verification through Endpoint API Generation

    Get PDF
© Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2016.This paper proposes a new hybrid session verification methodology for applying session types directly to mainstream languages, based on generating protocol-specific endpoint APIs from multiparty session types. The API generation promotes static type checking of the behavioural aspect of the source protocol by mapping the state space of an endpoint in the protocol to a family of channel types in the target language. This is supplemented by very light run-time checks in the generated API that enforce a linear usage discipline on instances of the channel types. The resulting hybrid verification guarantees the absence of protocol violation errors during the execution of the session. We implement our methodology for Java as an extension to the Scribble framework, and use it to specify and implement compliant clients and servers for real-world protocols such as HTTP and SMTP

Color Evaporation and Elastic Υ\Upsilon Photoproduction at DESY HERA

The diffractive photoproduction of vector mesons is usually described considering the two-gluon (Pomeron) exchange, non-diagonal parton distributions and the contribution of the real part to the cross section. In this letter we analyze the diffractive photoproduction of the Υ\Upsilon at HERA using an alternative model, the Color Evaporation Model (CEM), where the cross section is simply determined by the boson-gluon cross section and an assumption for the production of the colorless state. We verify that, similarly to the J/ΨJ/\Psi case, the HERA data for this process can be well described by the CEM. Moreover, we propose the analyzes of the ratio R=σΥ/σJ/ΨR = \sigma_{\Upsilon} / \sigma_{J/\Psi} to discriminate between the distinct approaches.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in PRD (Brief Reports
