Recent collecting cruises conducted in the Northwestern Gulf of Mexico at 40- to 90-m depth revealed a diverse deepwater flora that is dominated by members of the Cryptonemiales complex. In this article, we describe two species new to science, Platoma chrysymenioides sp. nov. (Schizymeniaceae) and Sebdenia integra sp. nov. (Sebdeniaceae). Chloroplast-encoded rbcL sequence analyses corroborate morphological and nuclear small subunit ribosomal RNA gene data that the red algal orders Cryptonemiales and Rhodymeniales are closely related. The allied order Nemastomatales is strongly supported to include the Nemastomataceae and Schizymeniaceae, but the phylogenetic position of the Sebdeniaceae and Tsengiaceae remains equivocal. The Cryptonemiales, Rhodymeniales, Nemastomatales, Sebdeniaceae, and Tsengiaceae form a well-supported monophyletic assemblage—the Cryptonemiales complex—within the Rhodophyta

A preliminary species list of subtidal macroalgal collections from established monitoring sites on two midshelf hard banks communities in the northwestern Gulf of Mexico is provided. A total of 50 taxa belonging to the green (Chlorophyta), brown (Phaeophyceae), and red (Rhodophyta) algae were identified, providing the first documentation of algal composition at Stetson Bank, TX, and Sonnier Bank, LA. Both sites are much more species rich and taxonomically distinct than previously reported, with a surprisingly different floristic composition between both. New records for the Gulf of Mexico include Laurencia chondrioides, Callithamniella tingitana, Diplothamnion jolyi, Griffithsia heteromorpha, and Dictyota pfaffii. Northernmost range extensions for four taxa are reported for the northwestern Gulf

Background and Aims: During the past decade, phycological research in the Seaflower International Biosphere Reserve has revealed a much more diverse marine flora than historically appreciated. This work aims to contribute to the knowledge of macroalgal biodiversity in the Archipelago of San Andres, Old Providence and Saint Cataline, Colombian Caribbean, adding 11 new records of red algae. Methods: The samples were collected around the islands in ten points covering different ecosystems, by SCUBA diving at depths between 0 and 37 m. Sampling was carried out between August and November 2009, December 2012, and September 2019 during the Seaflower Scientific Expedition. The algae collected were preserved in a 4% formalin/seawater solution. The identification was carried out using an optical microscope and specialized literature. All specimens were deposited in the herbarium JIW of the Biology Department of the Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Bogotá, Colombia. Key results: Eleven species of red macroalgae are newly reported for the Seaflower International Biosphere Reserve in the Caribbean Sea. Of these taxa, six have been previously reported for the Colombian Caribbean: Botryocladia spinulifera, Champia taironensis, Dasya caraibica, Pterocladiella bartlettii, Seirospora occidentalis, Spyridia aculeata subsp. complanata. The remaining five species are new records for the country: Botryocladia cf. bahamensis, Botryocladia cf. bermudana, Ceramium brevizonatum var. caraibicum Gloioderma iyoense and Wrightiella tumanowiczii. With these results the International Biosphere Reserve Seaflower hosts 153 species of Rhodophyta, belonging to 12 orders, 27 families and 73 genera. Conclusions: With the research carried out in the last 10 years, the number of registered taxa has increased from 202 to 325, which represents a 62% increase in the knowledge of macroalgae diversity and places the Archipelago in the second most diverse region in the Colombian Caribbean. Gallinara Island, a small island located 1.5 km off the shore of Liguria (Italy, north-western Mediterranean Sea) was included in a list of proposed Marine Protected Areas (MPA) in the early 90s. Since then, its benthic assemblages have been studied in detail and the main macrophytic communities have been mapped. A detailed assessment of its benthic macroalgal flora, however, has never been made. Gallinara was visited in the course of 5 consecutive years and its macroalgal flora was studied based on collections made by snorkelling and SCUBA diving. Overall, 141 macroalgal taxa were collected and identified (23 Chlorophyta, 94 Rhodophyta, 24 Ochrophyta); 91 of them represent new records for the island. One of the most notable new records is the non-indigenous red alga Womersleyella setacea, previously unreported from the island and widely distributed, particularly on the south-eastern shore. Observations made in the course of the surveys confirm the rarefaction of some large-sized brown algae (particularly Sargassum vulgare) but indicate also that others previously reported as rare (Cystoseira compressa, Dictyopteris polypodioides) are still common on the island

Background and Aims: During the Seaflower Scientific Expedition in 2019, extensive seaweed collection was carried out around Old Providence and Santa Catalina islands. Despite the intensive phycological studies realized during the past decade, new reports of macroalgae are still recorded for the Seaflower Biosphere Reserve. The objective of this work is to present three new records of brown algae for Colombia. Methods: The algal sampling was carried out in September 2019 during the Seaflower Scientific Expedition. The samples were collected around the Providencia and Santa Catalina islands in coral patches ecosystems, by SCUBA diving at depths between 3 and 16 m. The algae collected were preserved in a 4% formalin/seawater solution. The identification was carried out using optical and stereoscopic microscopes. All specimens were deposited in the herbarium JIW of the Biology Department of the Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Bogotá, Colombia. Key results: Three species of brown algae are newly reported for Colombia: Lobophora declerckii, Taonia abbottiana and Verosphacela ebrachia. Verosphacela has been reported, to date, only from the type locality in Florida and from Isla Mujeres, in Mexico. Due to its cryptic and small habit, it may be much more common than actually reported. Lobophora declerckii is apparently the most common species of Lobophora in the Archipelago. Taonia abbottiana may be much more common than reported to date, but it is easily confused with Stypopodium zonale. Conclusions: Despite the intense phycological research carried out in the past decade in the Archipelago of San Andrés, Old Providence and Santa Catalina, there is still much to be discovered.
