First XMM-Newton observations of strongly magnetic cataclysmic variables I: spectral studies of DP Leo and WW Hor
We present an analysis of the X-ray spectra of two strongly magnetic
cataclysmic variables, DP Leo and WW Hor, made using XMM-Newton. Both systems
were in intermediate levels of accretion. Hard optically thin X-ray emission
from the shocked accreting gas was detected from both systems, while a soft
blackbody X-ray component from the heated surface was detected only in DP Leo.
We suggest that the lack of a soft X-ray component in WW Hor is due to the fact
that the accretion area is larger than in previous observations with a
resulting lower temperature for the re-processed hard X-rays. Using a
multi-temperature model of the post-shock flow, we estimate that the white
dwarf in both systems has a mass greater than 1 Msun. The implications of this
result are discussed. We demonstrate that the `soft X-ray excess' observed in
many magnetic cataclysmic variables can be partially attributed to using an

Investigating Tangible and Hybrid Interactions to Augment the Reading Experience
For thousands of years, we as humans have been passing knowledge and telling stories through tangibly rich methods, beginning with writing on walls and even-tually evolving to printed books of today. However, the introduction of digital documents has recently created a world that has traded tangible richness for digital convenience. This thesis demonstrates innovative, tangible interfaces to help de-velop a possible future where digital documents can incorporate tangible elements. Furthermore, during our research, we discovered a pattern amongst people, where a hybrid approach to documents is becoming adopted. This discovery led to the investigation of hybrid experiences and the development of a system in which users can seamlessly switch between the physical and digital worlds.Each chapter of this thesis investigates a function of reading and its method both physically and digitally. Firstly we investigate the act of turning a page, a simple yet integral task of reading a modern book. This chapter explores materials and methods of bringing a tangible page-turning experience to digital books, followed by a user study and evaluation. Following this, we explore the use of tangible materials for side of device interactions. For example, printed books have many, frequently hundreds of pages, often have their edges felt, ruffled and flicked. Sev-eral interactions can be invoked through page edges, which are entirely removed from digital books. We design, develop and evaluate a guitar string-based system as a metaphor for page edges on a digital device.Many of us in this modern age carry on our person a smartphone, pretty much at all times. Smartphones have given us the ability to retrieve and read books wherever and whenever we please. However, the majority of people still prefer to read using physical methods. Having multiple formats to choose from has introduced a hybrid reading experience, where one might read physically at home and digitally whilst commuting, for example. We explore this experience, and the chapter follows a human-centred design approach to investigate, design, develop, and evaluate a digital bookmark system to switch between digital and physical books seamlessly
Composition profiles of InAs–GaAs quantum dots determined by medium-energy ion scattering
The composition profile along the [001] growth direction of low-growth-rate InAs–GaAs quantum dots (QDs) has been determined using medium-energy ion scattering (MEIS). A linear profile of In concentration from 100% In at the top of the QDs to 20% at their base provides the best fit to MEIS energy spectra
XMM-Newton observations of three short period polars: V347 Pav, GG Leo and EU UMa
We present phase-resolved XMM_Newton data of three short period polars: V347
Pav, GG Leo and EU UMa. All three systems show one dominant accretion region
which is seen for approximately half of the orbital cycle. GG Leo shows a
strong dip feature in its X-ray and UV light curves which is due to absorption
of X-rays from the accretion site by the accretion stream. The emission in the
case of EU UMa is dominated by soft X-rays: its soft/hard X-ray ratio is
amongst the highest seen in these objects. In contrast, GG Leo and V347 Pav
shows a ratio consistent with that predicted by the standard shock model. We
infer the mass of the white dwarf and explore the affect of restricting the
energy range on the derived parameters.Comment: accepted MNRA
Possible detection of two giant extrasolar planets orbiting the eclipsing polar UZ Fornacis
We present new high-speed, multi-observatory, multi-instrument photometry of
the eclipsing polar UZ For in order to measure precise mid-eclipse times with
the aim of detecting any orbital period variations. When combined with
published eclipse times and archival data spanning ~27 years, we detect
departures from a linear and quadratic trend of ~60 s. The departures are
strongly suggestive of two cyclic variations of 16(3) and 5.25(25) years. The
two favoured mechanisms to drive the periodicities are either two giant
extrasolar planets as companions to the binary (with minimum masses of
6.3(1.5)M(Jupiter) and 7.7(1.2)M(Jupiter)) or a magnetic cycle mechanism (e.g.
Applegate's mechanism) of the secondary star. Applegate's mechanism would
require the entire radiant energy output of the secondary and would therefore
seem to be the least likely of the two, barring any further refinements in the
effect of magnetic fieilds (e.g. those of Lanza et al.). The two planet model
can provide realistic solutions but it does not quite capture all of the
eclipse times measurements. A highly eccentric orbit for the outer planet would
fit the data nicely, but we find that such a solution would be unstable. It is
also possible that the periodicities are driven by some combination of both
mechanisms. Further observations of this system are encouraged.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, 2 table
The Relationship among Gender, Attachment Style and the Perception of Text Message Valence
ATTACHMENT STYLE AND PERCEPTION
Abstract
Text messaging has become a quick and easy way to get in touch with peers whether professionally or informally, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. This form of communication, however, can be detrimental if a message is perceived incorrectly. In order to understand what can cause these miscommunication issues, prior research studied the influence of punctuation, capitalization, and emoticons on the perception of text messages. However, specific traits of the message-recipient might be relevant for the interpretation as well. Butterworth and colleagues (2019) discovered that women are more likely to rate text messages as more affectionate than men. In addition to gender, research on attachment style was explored in the context of text-based communication and the results have shown that a high anxious attachment style is related to a negative perception of texts, whereas a high secure attachment style seems to lead to a positive interpretation (Fleuriet, 2010; McSpadden, 2020; Morey et al., 2013). The present study aimed to further examine the relationships among attachment styles, gender, and the perception of text message valence. Based on prior research it was hypothesized that attachment security is positively correlated with the valence of text messages and that attachment anxiety is negatively correlated with the valence of text message ratings. Finally, it was hypothesized that women will rate messages more extremely than men. In order to test those hypotheses a survey containing an attachment-style measure as well as a text messages rating task was conducted. Data is currently being collected, and we anticipate that the findings demonstrate that individuals who score higher on secure attachment rate text messages more positively and those who score higher on anxious attachment rate messages more negatively. Furthermore, the results indicate that women will rate messages as more affectionate. Even though these implications are giving further insight on the topic of text message perception, future research with a more representative sample size is necessary to gain more knowledge about other influential variables such as age. Increasing boys' and girls' intention to avoid teenage pregnancy: a cluster randomised control feasibility trial of an interactive video drama based intervention in post-primary schools in Northern Ireland
Background:
Adolescent men have a vital yet neglected role in reducing unintended teenage pregnancy (UTP). There is a need for gender-sensitive educational interventions.
Objectives:
To determine the value and feasibility of conducting an effectiveness trial of the If I Were Jack Relationship and Sexuality Education (RSE) intervention in a convenience quota sample of post-primary schools in Northern Ireland. Secondary objectives were to assess acceptability to schools, pupils (male/female, aged 14–15 years) and parents/guardians; to identify optimal delivery structures and systems; to establish participation rates and reach, including equality of engagement of different socioeconomic and religious types; to assess trial recruitment and retention rates; to assess variation in normal RSE practice; to refine survey instruments; to assess differences in outcomes for male and female pupils; to identify potential effect sizes that might be detected in an effectiveness trial and estimate appropriate sample size for that trial; and to identify costs of delivery and pilot methods for assessing cost-effectiveness.
Design:
Cluster randomised Phase II feasibility trial with an embedded process and economic evaluation.
Intervention:
A teacher-delivered classroom-based RSE resource – an interactive video drama (IVD) with classroom materials, teacher training and an information session for parents – to immerse young people in a hypothetical scenario of Jack, a teenager whose girlfriend is unintentionally pregnant. It addresses gender inequalities in RSE by focusing on young men and is designed to increase intentions to avoid UTP by encouraging young people to delay sexual intercourse and to use contraception consistently in sexual relationships.
Main outcome measures:
Abstinence from sexual intercourse (delaying initiation of sex or returning to abstinence) or avoidance of unprotected sexual intercourse (consistent correct use of contraception). Secondary outcomes included Knowledge, Attitudes, Skills and Intentions.
Results:
The intervention proved acceptable to schools, pupils and parents, as evidenced through positive process evaluation. One minor refinement to the parental component was required, namely the replacement of the teacher-led face-to-face information session for parents by online videos designed to deliver the intervention to parents/guardians into their home. School recruitment was successful (target 25%, achieved 38%). No school dropped out. Pupil retention was successful (target 85%, achieved 93%). The between-group difference in incidence of unprotected sex of 1.3% (95% confidence interval 0.55% to 2.2%) by 9 months demonstrated an effect size consistent with those reported to have had meaningful impact on UTP rates (resulting in an achievable sample size of 66 schools at Phase III). Survey instruments showed high acceptability and reliability of measures (Cronbach’s alpha: 0.5–0.7). Economic evaluation at Phase III is feasible because it was possible to (1) identify costs of delivering If I Were Jack (mean cost per pupil, including training of teachers, was calculated as £13.66); and (2) develop a framework for assessing cost-effectiveness.
Conclusion:
Trial methods were appropriate, and recruitment and retention of schools and pupils was satisfactory, successfully demonstrating all criteria for progression to a main trial. The perceived value of culture- and gender-sensitive public health interventions has been highlighted.

Progression to a Phase III effectiveness trial.

An Integrated TCGA Pan-Cancer Clinical Data Resource to Drive High-Quality Survival Outcome Analytics
For a decade, The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) program collected clinicopathologic annotation data along with multi-platform molecular profiles of more than 11,000 human tumors across 33 different cancer types. TCGA clinical data contain key features representing the democratized nature of the data collection process. To ensure proper use of this large clinical dataset associated with genomic features, we developed a standardized dataset named the TCGA Pan-Cancer Clinical Data Resource (TCGA-CDR), which includes four major clinical outcome endpoints. In addition to detailing major challenges and statistical limitations encountered during the effort of integrating the acquired clinical data, we present a summary that includes endpoint usage recommendations for each cancer type. These TCGA-CDR findings appear to be consistent with cancer genomics studies independent of the TCGA effort and provide opportunities for investigating cancer biology using clinical correlates at an unprecedented scale. Analysis of clinicopathologic annotations for over 11,000 cancer patients in the TCGA program leads to the generation of TCGA Clinical Data Resource, which provides recommendations of clinical outcome endpoint usage for 33 cancer types
