    Current accounts in the euro area: An intertemporal approach

    Get PDF
    This paper uses an intertemporal model of the current account to evaluate the fluctuations in current account balances experienced by Euro area countries over the last three decades. In the model current account balances are used to smooth consumption and they are driven by expectations about future income and relative prices. This simple model is not rejected for six (Belgium, France, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain) of the ten Euro area countries examined, although the model tends to underestimate their current account volatility. The analysis also shows that the relative contributions to current account balances of future output and relative prices differ across countries. Expectations of future growth increased in all Southern European countries at the creation of the Euro but they had considerably diverged by 2005. While in Portugal these expectations are now below its historical mean, in Spain they are at a historical high.Current account; euro; external deficits; economic integration;

    Wage inequality, segregation by skill and the price of capital in an assignment model

    Some pieces of empirical evidence suggest that in the U.S., over the last few decades, (i) wage inequality between-plants has risen much more than wage inequality within-plants and (ii) there has been an increase in the segregation of workers by skill into separate plants. This paper presents a frictionless assignment model in which these two features can be explained simultaneously as the result of the decline in the relative price of capital. Additional implications of the model regarding the skill premium and the dispersion in labor productivity across plants are also consistent with the empirical evidence

    Cuidados de enfermería post cirugía cardiaca en personas de edad avanzada: Reflexiones desde la complejidad de la práctica del cuidado

    This article presents our experience in the nursing care provided to a 79-year-old male who, after having been duly advised, signed a written consent to undergo cardiac surgery (single bypass). The patient was transferred to the floor, but 20 days later he was to be readmitted in the cardiac surgery intensive care unit with a severe dyspnoea, hypotension and diaphoresis condition. Given the complexity of the care he needed, during his long stay in the unit it was necessary to establish a comprehensive care plan, fulfilling some of his needs, accompanying him in moments of weakness and teaching him new ways to act so as to favour the recovery of his autonomy in the shortest possible time. The aim of this work is to open a space for reflection on the importance of care focused on the elderly and on the complexity of such care through the use of reflective and critical thinking.Este artículo presenta nuestra experiencia en los cuidados de enfermería realizados a un varón de 79 años quien, tras ser asesorado debidamente, firma el consentimiento informado para ser operado de cirugía cardiaca (bypass único). Es dado de alta y enviado a planta y a los 20 días precisa reingreso en la unidad de cuidados intensivos de cirugía cardiaca con un cuadro de disnea severa, hipotensión y diaforesis. Dada la complejidad de los cuidados que precisaba, en su larga estancia en la unidad, fue necesario instaurar un plan de curas integral, supliendo algunas necesidades, acompañándole en momentos de debilidad y enseñando al enfermo nuevas maneras de actuación, con el fin de favorecer en la mayor brevedad posible la recuperación de su independencia. Este trabajo tiene como objetivo abrir un espacio de reflexión sobre la importancia de los cuidados centrados en la persona de edad avanzada y la complejidad de los mismos, mediante el uso del pensamiento crítico y reflexiv
