    Using simple sequence repeats in 9 brassica complex species to assess hypertrophic curd induction

    Five Simple Sequence Repeats (SSRs) were used to assess the relationship between inflorescence characteristics and their allelic variation in 53 Brassica oleracea and Brassica wild relatives (n = 9). Curd morphometric traits, such as weight (CW), height (CH), diameter (CD1), shape (CS) inflorescence curvature angle (CA), and its curd stem diameter (CD2), were measured. The aim of the work was to analyze the relationships among the allelic patterns of the SSRs primers utilized, and their status of homo or heterozygosity registered at each locus, as well as the inflorescence morphometric traits in order to individuate genomic regions stimulating the hypertrophy of this reproductive organ. The relationships found explain the diversity among B. oleracea complex species (n = 9) for the inflorescence size and structure, allowing important time reduction during the breeding process by crossing wild species, transferring useful resistance, and organoleptic and nutraceutical traits. The five SSRs loci were BoABI1, BoAP1, BoPLD1, BoTHL1, and PBCGSSRBo39. According to the allelic variation ascertained, we evaluated the heterozygosity index (H) for each SSR above cited. The results showed a significant interaction between the H index of the BoPLD1 gene and the inflorescence characteristics, summarized by the First Principal Component (PC1) (p-value = 0.0244); we ascertained a negative correlation between the H index and inflorescence characteristics, namely CW, CH, CD1, CD2, CA. The homozygosity BoPLD1 alelles, indicated by the H index, affect the inflorescence characteristics and broccoli and cauliflower yields

    Diagnostic Role of Bronchoalveolar Lavage in Patients with Suspected SARS-CoV-2 Pneumonia and Negative Upper Respiratory Tract Swab: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

    The added role of bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) in SARS-CoV-2 detection in hospitalized patients with suspected COVID-19 pneumonia and at least one negative nasopharyngeal swab (NPS) has yet to be definitively established. We aimed to provide a systematic review and meta-analysis to summarize data from the literature on the diagnostic yield of BAL in this context. We searched Medline and Embase for all studies reporting outcomes of interest published up to October 2021. Two authors reviewed all titles/abstracts and retrieved the selected full texts according to predefined selection criteria. The summary estimate was derived using the random-effects model. Thirteen original studies, involving 868 patients, were included. The summary estimate of proportions of SARS-CoV-2 positivity in BAL fluid in patients with at least one previous negative NPS was 20% (95% confidence interval [CI]; 11–30%). Moreover, microbiological tests of BAL fluid led to the identification of other pathogens, mainly bacteria, in up to two-thirds of cases. BAL plays a crucial role in the diagnostic work-up of patients with clinical suspicion of COVID-19 and previous negative NPS, as it allowed to detect the infection in a significant proportion of subjects, who would have been otherwise misclassified, with relevant implications in the prevention of disease spread, especially in hospital settings

    Linomide blocks angiogenesis by breast carcinoma vascular endothelial growth factor transfectants.

    The blocking of angiogenesis provides a novel therapeutic target to inhibit tumour spreading. In this study, we investigated the effect of linomide on angiogenesis induced in vivo by highly angiogenic breast carcinoma cells. The rabbit cornea was used to assess neovascular growth in the absence of a tumour mass. MCF-7 cells stably transfected with the cDNA encoding for vascular endothelial growth factor 121 (VEGF121) (V12 clone) were used to elicit a potent VEGF-dependent corneal angiogenesis. After tumour cell implant, albino rabbits received 100 mg kg(-1) day(-1) linomide for 5 consecutive days. Daily observation of neovascular progression indicated that linomide blocked angiogenesis. The antiangiogenic effect of linomide was apparent within 48 h from the beginning of the treatment and was both angiosuppressive and angiostatic. The block of neovascular growth lasted over 10 days from treatment suspension, and preformed vessels, which had regressed, remained dormant, suggesting the persistence of unfavourable conditions for capillary progression. Linomide (50-200 microg ml[-1]) was not cytotoxic in vitro on resting capillary endothelial cells but blocked endothelial cell replication induced by VEGF. Our data indicate that linomide can efficiently and persistently block VEGF-dependent angiogenesis in vivo in the absence of a growing tumour mass. These data suggest that linomide could be a chemopreventive drug in breast cancer patients and a valuable tool in clinical settings in which metastatic spreading occurs in the absence of a detectable tumour mass

    We analyze the specific heat for the O(N)O(N) vector model on a dd-dimensional film geometry of thickness LL using ``environmentally friendly'' renormalization. We consider periodic, Dirichlet and antiperiodic boundary conditions, deriving expressions for the specific heat and an effective specific heat exponent, \alpha\ef. In the case of d=3d=3, for N=1N=1, by matching to the exact exponent of the two dimensional Ising model we capture the crossover for \xi_L\ra\infty between power law behaviour in the limit {L\over\xi_L}\ra\infty and logarithmic behaviour in the limit {L\over\xi_L}\ra0 for fixed LL, where ξL\xi_L is the correlation length in the transverse dimensions.Comment: 21 pages of Plain TeX.     Scaling of the superfluid density in superfluid films

    We study scaling of the superfluid density with respect to the film thickness by simulating the x−yx-y model on films of size L×L×HL \times L \times H (L>>HL >> H) using the cluster Monte Carlo. While periodic boundary conditions where used in the planar (LL) directions, Dirichlet boundary conditions where used along the film thickness. We find that our results can be scaled on a universal curve by introducing an effective thickness. In the limit of large HH our scaling relations reduce to the conventional scaling forms. Using the same idea we find scaling in the experimental results using the same value of ν=0.6705\nu = 0.6705.Comment: 4 pages, one postscript file replaced by one Latex file and 5 postscript figure

    The Tor Caldara CO2 Diffuse Degassing Structure (DDS): 222Rn/220Rn output before and after the August, 22, 2005 Anzio Earthquake (Mw=4.6).

    Soon after a 222Rn and 220Rn survey in soil gases, performed (June 2005) in the frame of the Diffuse Degassing in Italy risk assessment project, a moderate earthquake (Mw=4.6) occurred in the Anzio offshore, on August, 22, 2005, only 5 miles from the Tor Caldara Diffuse Degassing Structure (DDS onward). Having available the pre-earthquake 222Rn and 220Rn grid-map on around 50 soil-gas points and being 222Rn both a stress-pathfinder and a discriminative component of activated-faults, a mirrorlike survey was repeated on the same 50 sites, soon after the close earthquake. Later, during a quiescent-aseismic period (December, 2005), a CO2 flux survey was performed for the same 50 sites, adding detailed measurements (more than 100 sites) for the highest flux sectors. The aim of this survey was both to have an overall picture of the background CO2 flux and to calculate the total budget of CO2 flux throughout the DDS, to better interpret the 222Rn and 220Rn areal surveys before and after the seismic event. Herewith, we distinguish the contribution of organic, diffusive and advective CO2 flux. Hints of convection and strong degassing linked to the fracture field, inside the DDS, have been envisaged on selected points, where continuous monitoring stations could be strategic, for seismic, volcanic and NGH surveillance. Despite we found higher 222Rn values in soils after the earthquake, suggesting an enhanced local degassing probably linked to a stress signal throughout the DDS as a whole, the results highlight an unmodified shape and location of the 222Rn anomalies before and after the earthquake. This evidence excludes both that the activated seismogenic segment has affected in some ways both the DDS degassing patterns and that fracture field changed. A similar result could be expected if the activated fault was oriented along the DDS itself and reached the surface. This evidence is well correlated with the reconstructed focal mechanism of the earthquake, pertaining to the transfer structure of the Ardea Graben , located along a peripheral sector of the degassing Alban Hills volcano and intersecting the DDS Tor Caldara itself. The shape and location of 222Rn anomalies inside the DDS for both the surveys are strictly inversely correlated with the areal CO2 flux data. The geometry of the degassing pathways is probably linked to the barrier action (sealing power) of the clays cropping out in the study area. These clays are generated by the strong leaching of the outcropping sedimentary Pleistocene rocks due to the huge flux of volcanic gas -rich fluids

    MF59-adjuvanted H1N1v vaccine

    Summary Background:  When H1N1v vaccines become widely available, most elderly subjects will have already received their seasonal influenza vaccination. Adults seeking H1N1v vaccination may be offered seasonal vaccine as well. We investigated prior seasonal vaccination in adult and elderly subjects, and concomitant vaccination with seasonal vaccine in adults, on the tolerability and immunogenicity of the Novartis MF59-adjuvanted H1N1v vaccine, Focetria®. Methods:  A total of 264 adult (four groups) and 154 elderly (three groups) subjects were enrolled. The licensure study cohorts for plain (Agrippal®) and MF59-adjuvanted (Fluad®) 2009–2010 seasonal vaccines were invited to receive Focetria 3 months later, with seasonal vaccine–naive controls, and adults who received Focteria and seasonal vaccine concomitantly. Immunogenicity of all vaccines was assessed by haemagglutination inhibition on Days 1 and 22, safety and reactogenicity were monitored using patient diaries. Results:  All adult and elderly groups met all the European CHMP licensing criteria for H1N1v, as did adults receiving concomitant seasonal vaccine for the three seasonal strains. Vaccines were generally well tolerated, causing no SAEs, and profiles typical of MF59-adjuvanted vaccines. Reactions were mainly mild or moderate and transient, and unaffected by prior or concomitant seasonal vaccination except for elderly subjects previously given MF59-adjuvanted seasonal vaccine, whose reaction rates to Focetria were about half those seen in groups receiving their first MF59 vaccine. Conclusion:  One dose of MF59-adjuvanted H1N1v vaccine met the licensure criteria for adult and elderly subjects 3 months after seasonal vaccination, or concomitantly with seasonal vaccine in adults, without impacting the tolerability or immunogenicity of either vaccine, thus facilitating mass influenza immunisation campaigns
