Lebesgue type inequalities for quasi-greedy bases

We show that for quasi-greedy bases in real or complex Banach spaces the error of the thresholding greedy algorithm of order N is bounded by the best N- term error of approximation times a function of N which depends on the democracy functions and the quasi-greedy constant of the basis. If the basis is democratic this function is bounded by C logN. We show with two examples that this bound is attained for quasi-greedy democratic bases.Comment: 19 page

Warriors and Mystics : Religious Iconography, Eroticism, Blasphemy and Gender in Punk Female Artists

This paper discusses the relationship between the use of religious iconography related to eroticism by Spanish punk artists, and the gender stereotyping that the appropriation of these symbols aims to destabilize. The desire to shock and disturb the audience places these artists in a position where they have to challenge established values, such as religious and identity ones. There are many examples of male punk bands that openly rebel against organized religion, but the critique of these bands is direct, whereas women use eroticism to expose the patriarchal strategies of the church, as well as to project an image of themselves that breaks all expectations. Religious iconography becomes the tool for the ironic reevaluation and eventual destruction of cultural and gender structures as part of their artistic program.Este artículo estudia la relación entre el uso de la iconografía religiosa y el erotismo en el punk español y los estereotipos de género que la apropiación de dichos símbolos busca desestabilizar. El deseo de epatar y desconcertar al público sitúa a estas artistas en una posición en la que pretenden cuestionar valores establecidos, principalmente religiosos e identitarios. Existen numerosos ejemplos de grupos de punk masculinos que se rebelan abiertamente contra la religión organizada; sin embargo, la crítica que hacen estas bandas es directa, mientras que las mujeres utilizan el erotismo para exponer las estrategias patriarcales de la Iglesia, así como para proyectar una imagen de ellas mismas que rompe las expectativas del público. La iconografía religiosa se convierte de este modo en una herramienta para la reevaluación irónica y la destrucción de estructuras culturales de género, como parte de su programa artístico

Wavelet methods in image compression

We present in printed form the contents of a survey lecture given at the International Workshop in Classical Analysis and Applications held in Yaounde in December 2001. The purpose of these notes is to introduce to a general public several approaches to image compression based on linear and nonlinear approximation. We compare Fourier and wavelet based methods and present some of the mathematics behind them. In particular we show how Sobolev and Besov spaces arise naturally from this theory. The results are known in the literature so we have selected a suitable bibliography for further reading into the subject

Drivers and Impacts of R&D Adoption on Transport and Logistics Services

Actually, technologies and applications in industries are changing via business restructuring, new business models, new knowledge and supply chains. So R&D is not focused primarily on manufacturing industry as it used to be, but on different kinds of industries as logistics and transport (TLS). Nevertheless, the characteristics of the TLS industry determine the introduction of specific R&D solutions accordingly to sectors operations. The objective of this paper is to describe the R&D opportunities in the TLS industry and how managers use them to make their businesses more innovative and efficient. Using the Structure-Conduct-Performance (SCP) model the paper identifies the links between R&D adoption and innovation dynamics. Relating the findings, on the driver’s side there are three points that are worth mentioning: increasing market competition, the relationships of firms interacting with each other and the availability and quality of complementary assets such as employee skills and IT know-how. On the impacts’ side, firms advanced in terms of implementing R&D solutions are more likely to implement organizational changes. Finally, a set of recommendations on how to further improve the continuous innovation in the TLS industry is presented

La literatura infantil com eina per tractar els conflictes familiars

Aquest treball tracta el tema de com poder treballar els conflictes familiars que poden ocórrer a casa mitjançant la literatura infantil. Les problemàtiques que van a treballar-se són la mort, l'adopció i la separació i el divorci. Per aquest motiu, el que es farà serà situar-nos un poc dintre d'aquests conflictes i seguidament es realitzarà una recerca bibliogràfica d'alguns contes que tracten aquests temes. Amb tota aquesta informació es farà una proposta didàctica per treballar aquests problemes a l'aula
