    Artificial incubation is an essential process to obtain healthy birds with good performance; nevertheless, it requires sustained improvement. During this process, incubation temperature is considered a critical factor, which has been studied. The objective of this study was to evaluate the development of RossÂź embryos after hot and cold thermal stimulation. To this end, temperatures 1.39ÂșC above the standard temperature and a temperature fixed at 36.00ÂșC that varied 1.00 to 0.30ÂșC below the standard temperature were applied during the final embryonic development period (days 14 to 18) for three hours, on a commercial scale. Results revealed that hot and cold thermal stimulations did not cause embryo mortality; the hatching and chick quality index were maintained and even increased. Therefore, we believe that thermal stimulation has the potential to improve hatchery index, and thus grange performance; however, adjustments are needed, varying according to each individual hatchery, before it can used as a protocol. © 2016, Universidade Federal de Santa Maria.     Meta-analysis of relationship between weaning age and daily weight gain of piglets in the farrowing and nursery phases

    A systematic review of the literature was carried out to perform a meta-analysis to assess effects of age at weaning on the performance of piglets in the range of 14 to 42 days old. This step consisted in defining the databases and keywords to be employed in searching for papers for the meta-analysis. To that end, the databases Capes Publication Portal and Google Scholar were searched for researches published from 2001 to 2019. After the acceptance and exclusion criteria had been defined and applied, 28 papers were selected. The data were collected with ExcelÂź software of Microsoft Office for later statistical analysis. Orthogonal polynomial contrasts were used and the linear and quadratic regression equations were fitted with hypotheses tested at the 5% significance level. The results confirmed the disadvantages of early weaning and the benefits of weaning at around 28 days old. In the farrowing phase, piglets weaned after 35 days had lower daily weight gain (DWG) (P =0.002) than those weaned at 27 days. The derivative of the regression of DWG while nursing on age revealed that a weaning age of 26.34 days yielded the maximum DWG among the ages assessed. After weaning, the maximum DWG was achieved by weaning piglets at 32.26 days. Given the performance of piglets in the farrowing and nursery phases, the results of this meta-analysis indicated the best weaning age was between 26 and 32 days

    Gravity Waves from Instantons

    We perform a first principles computation of the spectrum of gravity waves produced in open inflationary universes. The background spacetime is taken to be the continuation of an instanton saddle point of the Euclidean no boundary path integral. The two-point tensor correlator is computed directly from the path integral and is shown to be unique and well behaved in the infrared. We discuss the tensor contribution to the cosmic microwave background anisotropy and show how it may provide an observational discriminant between different types of primordial instantons.Comment: 19 pages, RevTex file, including two postscript figure file

    Prevention of childhood poisoning in the home: overview of systematic reviews and a systematic review of primary studies

    Unintentional poisoning is a significant child public health problem. This systematic overview of reviews, supplemented with a systematic review of recently published primary studies synthesizes evidence on non-legislative interventions to reduce childhood poisonings in the home with particular reference to interventions that could be implemented by Children's Centres in England or community health or social care services in other high income countries. Thirteen systematic reviews, two meta-analyses and 47 primary studies were identified. The interventions most commonly comprised education, provision of cupboard/drawer locks, and poison control centre (PCC) number stickers. Meta-analyses and primary studies provided evidence that interventions improved poison prevention practices. Twenty eight per cent of studies reporting safe medicine storage (OR from meta-analysis 1.57, 95% CI 1.22–2.02), 23% reporting safe storage of other products (OR from meta-analysis 1.63, 95% CI 1.22–2.17) and 46% reporting availability of PCC numbers (OR from meta-analysis 3.67, 95% CI 1.84–7.33) demonstrated significant effects favouring the intervention group. There was a lack of evidence that interventions reduced poisoning rates. Parents should be provided with poison prevention education, cupboard/drawer locks and emergency contact numbers to use in the event of a poisoning. Further research is required to determine whether improving poison prevention practices reduces poisoning rates

    SO(10) unified models and soft leptogenesis

    Motivated by the fact that, in some realistic models combining SO(10) GUTs and flavour symmetries, it is not possible to achieve the required baryon asymmetry through the CP asymmetry generated in the decay of right-handed neutrinos, we take a fresh look on how deep this connection is in SO(10). The common characteristics of these models are that they use the see-saw with right-handed neutrinos, predict a normal hierarchy of masses for the neutrinos observed in oscillating experiments and in the basis where the right-handed Majorana mass is diagonal, the charged lepton mixings are tiny. In addition these models link the up-quark Yukawa matrix to the neutrino Yukawa matrix Y^\nu with the special feature of Y^\nu_{11}-> 0 Using this condition, we find that the required baryon asymmetry of the Universe can be explained by the soft leptogenesis using the soft B parameter of the second lightest right-handed neutrino whose mass turns out to be around 10^8 GeV. It is pointed out that a natural way to do so is to use no-scale supergravity where the value of B ~1 GeV is set through gauge-loop corrections.Comment: 26 pages, 2 figures.     Rotating Black Branes in the presence of nonlinear electromagnetic field

    In this paper, we consider a class of gravity whose action represents itself as a sum of the usual Einstein-Hilbert action with cosmological constant and an U(1)U(1) gauge field for which the action is given by a power of the Maxwell invariant. We present a class of the rotating black branes with Ricci flat horizon and show that the presented solutions may be interpreted as black brane solutions with two event horizons, extreme black hole and naked singularity provided the parameters of the solutions are chosen suitably. We investigate the properties of the solutions and find that for the special values of the nonlinear parameter, the solutions are not asymptotically anti-deSitter. At last, we obtain the conserved quantities of the rotating black branes and find that the nonlinear source effects on the electric field, the behavior of spacetime, type of singularity and other quantities.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, to appear in EPJ
