The induced Chern-Simons term at finite temperature
It is argued that the derivative expansion is a suitable method to deal with
finite temperature field theory, if it is restricted to spatial derivatives
only. Using this method, a simple and direct calculation is presented for the
radiatively induced Chern-Simons--like piece of the effective action of
(2+1)-dimensional fermions at finite temperature coupled to external gauge
fields. The gauge fields are not assumed to be subjected to special
constraints, and in particular, they are not required to be stationary nor
Abelian.Comment: 5 pages, REVTEX, no figure
Weeds as important vegetables for farmers
The objective of this study was to investigate the multiple uses and cognitive importance of edible weeds in Northeast Thailand. Research methods included focus group discussions and freelistings. A total of 43 weeds consumed as vegetable were reported, including economic, naturalized, agricultural and environmental weeds. The weedy vegetables varied considerably on edible parts, presenting both reproductive (flowers, fruits and seeds) and vegetative organs (shoots, leaves, flower stalks, stems or the whole aerial part). The results of this study show that weedy vegetables are an important resource for rice farmers in this region, not only as a food but also because of the multiple additional uses they have, especially as medicine. The fact that the highest Cognitive Salience Index (CSI) scores of all wild vegetables freelisted corresponded to weeds, reinforces the assertion that weeds are culturally cognitively important for local farmers as a vegetable source. This is a key finding, given that these species are targets of common pesticides used in this region
Formation spectra of charmed mesonânucleus systems using an antiproton beam
AbstractWe investigate the structure and formation of charmed mesonânucleus systems, with the aim of understanding the charmed mesonânucleon interactions and the properties of the charmed mesons in the nuclear medium. The DÂŻ mesic nuclei are of special interest, since they have tiny decay widths due to the absence of strong decays for the DÂŻN pair. Employing an effective model for the DÂŻN and DN interactions and solving the KleinâGordon equation for DÂŻ and D in finite nuclei, we find that the Dââ11B system has 1s and 2p mesic nuclear states and that the D0â11B system binds in a 1s state. In view of the forthcoming experiments by the PANDA and CBM Collaborations at the future FAIR facility and the J-PARC upgrade, we calculate the formation spectra of the [Dââ11B] and [D0â11B] mesic nuclei for an antiproton beam on a 12C target. Our results suggest that it is possible to observe the 2p Dâ mesic nuclear state with an appropriate experimental setup

A coleção herpetológica das Faculdades Integradas do Tapajós/Faculdade da AmazÎnia, Santarém, Parå, Brasil: 1 - Répteis
It shows the collection of the herpetological collection of the Tapajos Integrated Colleges/College Amazon, with complete list of species of reptiles and amphibians deposited in the collection. The herpetological collection currently houses 3.349 specimens, has scientific and didactic collection. The entire collection is properly tumbled and packaged as minimum requirements for collections. He represents an excellent database for the study of amazon herpetofauna. The cities with the most representative specimens of deposits in the collection are Santarem and Belterra, ParĂĄ, Brazil; most copies come from scientific expeditions and be can considered a regional dynamic collection because it is to the community. However, greater investments are needed structural, for the maintenance and growth of, the collection so that it continues in of continue with the performance of their duties.Apresenta-se o acervo da coleção herpetolĂłgica das Faculdades Integradas do TapajĂłs/Faculdade da AmazĂŽnia, com lista completa das espĂ©cies de rĂ©pteis depositados na coleção. Leading order one-loop CP and P violating effective action in the Standard Model
The fermions of the Standard Model are integrated out to obtain the effective
Lagrangian in the sector violating P and CP at zero temperature. We confirm
that no contributions arise for operators of dimension six or less and show
that the leading operators are of dimension eight. To assert this we explicitly
compute one such non-vanishing contribution, namely, that with three Z^0, two
W^+ and two W^-. Terms involving just gluons and W's are also considered,
however, they turn out to vanish in the P-odd sector to eighth order. The
analogous gluonic term in the CP-odd and P-even (C-odd) sector is non-vanishing
and it is also computed. The expressions derived apply directly to Dirac
massive neutrinos. All CP-violating results display the infrared enhancement
already found at dimension six.Comment: 12 pages, no figure
Eating Well While Dining Out: Collaborating with Local Restaurants to Promote Heart Healthy Menu Items
Background: Because Americans commonly consume restaurant foods with poor dietary quality, effective interventions are needed to improve food choices at restaurants. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to design and evaluate a restaurant-based intervention to help customers select and restaurants promote heart healthy menu items with healthful fats and high-quality carbohydrates. Methods: The intervention included table tents outlining 10 heart healthy eating tips, coupons promoting healthy menu items, an information brochure, and link to study website. Pre- and postintervention surveys were completed by restaurant managers and customers completed a brief âinterceptâ survey. Results: Managers (n = 10) reported that the table tents and coupons were well received, and several noted improved personal nutrition knowledge. Overall, 4214 coupons were distributed with 1244 (30%) redeemed. Of 300 customers surveyed, 126 (42%) noticed the table tents and, of these, 115 (91%) considered the nutrition information helpful, 42 (33%) indicated that the information influenced menu items purchased, and 91 (72%) reported that the information will influence what they order in the future. Discussion: The intervention was well received by restaurant managers and positively influenced menu item selection by many customers. Translation to Health Education Practice: Further research is needed to assess effective strategies for scaling up and sustaining this intervention approach
Phenotypic Diversity for Seed Mineral Concentration in North American Dry Bean Germplasm of Middle American Ancestry
Dry bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) seeds are a major protein, carbohydrate, and mineral source in the human diet of peoples in multiple regions of the world. Seed mineral biofortification is an ongoing objective to improve this important food source. The objective of this research was to assess the seed mineral concentration of five macroelements and eight microelements in a large panel (n = 277) of modern race Durango and race Mesoamerica genotypes to determine if variability existed that could be exploited for targeted seed biofortification. Varieties that derive from these races are found in many diets throughout the world. The panel was grown in replicated trials under typical production conditions in the major bean growing regions of the United States, and a subset of the panel was also grown in replicated trials at three locations under control and terminal drought conditions. Except for K, seed mineral concentrations were higher for race Mesoamerica genotypes. Significantly higher seed concentrations for the majority of the minerals were observed for white-seeded genotypes and race Durango genotypes with the now preferred indeterminate, upright growth habit. Modern genotypes (since 1997) had equal or increased mineral concentrations compared with older genotypes. Drought affected mineral content differentially, having no effect on the microelement content but increased Co, Fe, and Ni concentrations. The correlation of Ca and Mn concentrations suggests that these elements may share seed deposition mechanisms. The high heritability for seed mineral concentration implies that breeding progress can be achieved by parental selection from this panel
