The goal of this paper is to explore the perceived effect that the Computer Science Curriculum has on the mental health of female students. To discover these effects we conducted 50 interviews over a period of several months with the female students of the Computer Science and Software Engineering (CSSE) department at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo. The total amount of Computer Science (CSC) majors at this institution is approximately 680, with 150 of them being female, so we were able to gather responses from 33.3% of the female CSC students from our interviews. It is worth noting that the overwhelming majority of interviewees (68%) were Seniors who provided extensive information on their experience in the major. The purpose of the questions we asked was to gather data on depression, anxiety, and how the CSC curriculum influences on their overall happiness. This paper will highlight the major trends that we saw in the responses such as the imposter syndrome, the difficulties of sophomore year and CPE 357, the benefits of having friends within the major, and the negative mental health impacts resulting. From there it will propose potential causes for the trends as well as solutions that may be helpful

pH-Dependent Conformational Switch Impacts Stability of the PsbS Dimer

[Image: see text] The photosystem II PsbS protein triggers the photoprotective mechanism of plants by sensing the acidification of the thylakoid lumen. Despite the mechanism of action of PsbS would require a pH-dependent monomerization of the dimeric form, a clear connection between the pH-induced structural changes and the dimer stability is missing. Here, by applying constant pH coarse-grained and all-atom molecular dynamics simulations, we investigate the pH-dependent structural response of the PsbS dimer. We find that the pH variation leads to structural changes in the lumen-exposed helices, located at the dimeric interface, providing an effective switch between PsbS inactive and active form. Moreover, the monomerization free energies reveal that in the neutral pH conformation, where the network of H-bond interactions at the dimeric interface is destroyed, the protein–protein interaction is weaker. Our results show how the pH-dependent conformations of PsbS affect their dimerization propensity, which is at the basis of the photoprotective mechanism

This project was conducted at a level one trauma center, acute care hospital consisting of 459 beds. With more patients than wound care nurses, hospital-acquired pressure injuries (HAPIs) have become a significant problem for this hospital. A gap between reporting in the Safety and Quality Information System (SQIS) and the reporting that takes place in electronic health record (EHR) with wound care consults has been observed. A root cause analysis (RCA) was used to identify discrepancies. The accurate collection of data was identified as paramount providing information necessary to create improvements and lower the occurrence of HAPIs. The conceptual framework which guided this project to decrease the incidence of inaccurate HAPI documentation was the PDSA model/cycle. The Lewin Change Model was applied as the leadership theory. The cost of one HAPI is 14,506andcanpotentiallycostthehospital14,506 and can potentially cost the hospital 2,088,864 per year. With the proper education to prevent HAPIs from occurring, the medical center can save on average $1,044,432 per year. The plan is to educate nurses on the prevention, correct staging, and proper documentation of HAPIs. Using process and balance measures, the team can study the effectiveness of the interventions. Additionally, nurses who attended educational sessions completed pre and post tests to assess their knowledge which was then compared through a bar chart. With all these efforts, expected outcomes are to sustain a 50% decrease in HAPIs at this hospital

High Risk Hustling: Payment Processors Sexual Proxies and Discrimination by Design

Sex workers are increasingly documenting financial discrimination when accessing banks, payment processors and financial providers. As hustle economy workers, barriers to digital financial infrastructure impact sex workers’ abilities to maintain their livelihoods, resulting in structural marginalization and vulnerability to violence. Internationally, peer-led sex worker organizations have documented payment processors that discriminate, collating public policies and user experiences. They report refusals of merchant services, being unable to open accounts, being denied loans, finance or insurance, higher premiums, and having money frozen, withheld or forfeited. In this article, we examine the policies of banks and payment providers who refuse service to sex workers, sex industry businesses and other sexual purposes. Drawing from sex worker media from two different regulatory environments, the United States and Australia, we show how sex workers are identified via multiple means, including through algorithmic detection, malicious flagging, unique business names, service descriptions, external links, use of pseudonyms, linking of personal and professional identities, and sex work activism. We argue that the ‘sexual proxies’ that identify sex workers are founded on problematic assumptions of sex as high risk and operate to capture a wide variety of uses, including access to sex education, abortion services and mutual aid funds. We position financial discrimination against sex workers as a multi-layered problem, stemming from classist, racist, transphobic, and whorephobic laws and policies, accelerated by automated risk assessments and privatization of financial infrastructure. Financial discrimination is enabled by the criminalization of sex work, and, due to the exportation of U.S. policy, continues even in jurisdictions where sex work is decriminalized, buoyed by anti-trafficking policies that conflate sex work with exploitation and identity verification policies driven by anti-terrorism and anti-fraud legislation. As a result, financial discrimination disproportionately impacts sex workers who are undocumented, marginalized or most at risk of violence. The current challenge facing sex workers is how to survive in this system, including by holding payment processors accountable. We outline a series of potential accountability measures, including an overhaul of law and policy frameworks

This study aims to adapt and evaluate the validity of the Substance Addiction Consequences scale for the Brazilian community-based addiction setting. This is a psychometric study, conducted in two stages: (1) cultural adaptation and (2) validation using the psychometric Rasch model. The Substance Addiction Consequences derived from the Nursing Outcome Classification comprises 16 items and four domains in the original instrument. We applied the original scale with 200 outpatients at two Psychosocial Care Centers for Alcohol and Drugs in São Paulo, Brazil. The four subscales are suitable for the Rasch model. In 13 of the 16 items, infits and outfits are between 0.5 and 1.5, corresponding to the model's optimal parameters. In addition, we removed one item that distorted the measurement. The psychometrics suggested that the SAC scale is valid with its 15 items and four domains. Therefore, it can be considered appropriate to use in the Brazilian community-based addiction setting.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
