    “Here I Come to Save the Day!” Does Parental Mediation Moderate Associations between Superhero Exposure and Behavior in Young Boys?

    Studies have shown that superheroes are very popular among preschool boys, but research on the effect of exposure to superhero media and toys is limited. Superheroes frequently use aggression to defend others, and certain characteristics of superheroes encourage wishful identification among boys. However, it is unknown whether superhero exposure and identification is associated with aggression, prosocial behaviors, or behaviors with the purpose of defending others. Parental active mediation of media (i.e discussions of media content) can reduce the negative effects of aggressive content by modifying children’s perceptions of aggression. This study aimed to examine the associations between superhero exposure/identification and aggressive, prosocial, and defending behavior in preschool boys and to examine whether parental active mediation of television content moderates these associations. Sixty-four parents of preschool boys (mean age = 60.6 months) completed measures of their child’s superhero identification/exposure, their own active mediation, and their child’s aggressive and prosocial behaviors. Results revealed that superhero exposure and identification was associated with decreased prosocial behavior and increased verbal aggression. These associations were not moderated by active parental mediation. Additionally, low levels of parental mediation, combined with high levels of superhero identification/exposure were positively correlated with aggressive defending behaviors. Future research should examine gender and age differences in the associations between superhero exposure and behavior. Additionally, questions remain about the differential effects of discussing media content with preschoolers, as this form of mediation may be less effective for certain types of programs during the preschool years.     Kleberg bluestem (Dichanthium annulatum) is an invasive grass species native to Africa but now found in southern United States, Mexico, and other tropical and subtropical countries throughout the world. Using the modeling software MaxEnt, climatic variables from WorldClim, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) scenario A1B, and two General Circulatory Models: the Canadian model (Canadian Centre for Climate Modelling and Analysis or CCCMA), and the Australian model (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation or CSIRO), several models were developed to determine the possible implications of climatic change on the suitable habitat for D. annulatum, in the year 2050. Models indicated suitability could expand northward into the United States in all southern-most states. Further analysis is recommended to better understand effects of climate change on the distribution of the species.     Child poverty in the United States, with regard to student achievement, has grave challenges for the children who face poverty (Scott & Pressman, 2013). Not only is living in poverty associated with lower academic achievement, but student poverty is also associated with lower rates of school completion (Borg, Borg, & Stranahan, 2012; Cooper & Crosnoe, 2007; Kena et al., 2015). Consequentially, students who do not complete high school are more likely to (a) serve time in prison, (b) need government assistance, and/or ( c) die at an earlier age (Messacar & Oreopoulos, 2013). With the increasing number of children who are living in poverty, child poverty is an issue that needs to be at the forefront of the educational agenda (Tienken, 2012)

    Impact of Integrating a Neonatal Early-Onset Sepsis Risk Calculator into the Electronic Health Record.

    Investigators from Kaiser Permanente developed a risk-assessment calculator as a tool for evaluation of early-onset sepsis (EOS) to narrow antibiotic use for the treatment of EOS. The integration of the EOS risk calculator into an electronic health record will minimize manual calculations and data entry and improve compliance and accuracy through automation. Methods: We performed a retrospective chart review for neonates ≥34 weeks and 0 days gestational age. We collected data pre-integration and post-integration of the EOS risk calculator. The primary outcome measure is the accuracy of user input into the calculator. Secondary outcomes include compliance with using the EOS risk calculator, impact on clinical recommendation when incorrectly calculated, assessment of antibiotic utilization rate (AUR), and comparison of EOS risk calculator recommendations with Centers for Disease Control and American Academy of Pediatrics recommendations. Results: Miscalculations occurred in 52% of instances pre-integration and 19% of instances post-integration; Conclusions: Integration of the EOS risk calculator into the electronic health record significantly increased calculator accuracy, although it did not show statistically significant differences with regards to compliance, clinical recommendations, or AUR
