Statistical Error in Particle Simulations of Hydrodynamic Phenomena

We present predictions for the statistical error due to finite sampling in the presence of thermal fluctuations in molecular simulation algorithms. Specifically, we establish how these errors depend on Mach number, Knudsen number, number of particles, etc. Expressions for the common hydrodynamic variables of interest such as flow velocity, temperature, density, pressure, shear stress and heat flux are derived using equilibrium statistical mechanics. Both volume-averaged and surface-averaged quantities are considered. Comparisons between theory and computations using direct simulation Monte Carlo for dilute gases, and molecular dynamics for dense fluids, show that the use of equilibrium theory provides accurate results.Comment: 24 pages postscript (including 16 figures

This work is devoted to study the relation between regularity and decay of solutions of some dissipative perturbations of the Korteweg-de Vries equation in weighted and asymmetrically weighted Sobolev spaces

Understanding the Relationship between Customer Concentration and Profitability in Public Firms in the Electronics Manufacturing Industry

This study investigates the relationship between a supplier’s profitability and their major customers. Previous literature concerning a firm’s customer makeup and their profitability have produced two general conclusions. The first conclusion is that there is a negative correlation due to the power imbalance major customers gain over their suppliers, resulting in lower prices, overextended credit accounts, and inconsistent cash payments for the goods provided by the supplier. Other literature argues that there is a positive correlation due to mutual dependence between a customer and its supplier causing an increase in information sharing and joint actions, resulting in a higher profitability for the supplier. This study analyzed 136 firms in the electronics manufacturing industry in 2017 and found a positive and significant correlation between customer concentration and a supplier’s profitability. The analysis also found a positive but insignificant correlation between mutual dependence and a supplier’s profitability. The results suggest that gained efficiencies from greater customer concentration outweigh the effects of a disadvantageous power imbalance by major customers

The teaching of English in the national curriculum : a study of selected schools in Gibraltar

This study examines the implementation of national curriculum English in three schools in Gibraltar. The schools in question, St Paul's First School, Bishop Fitzgerald Middle School and Bayside Comprehensive School together encompass the full national curriculum age-range.To set the above in context, the study first traces the development of English as a subject since 1904 and the advent of the national curriculum. Furthermore, it provides a historical perspective through the examination of the forging of links between the Gibraltar and English systems of education. It then goes on to trace the evolution of English teaching on the Rock leading to the decision to adopt the national curriculum there. The main body of research deals with the strategies for implementation of the English Orders employed by the three schools which form the basis of this study. Significantly different approaches were observed with St Paul's School being more advanced in its strategies, something that can be attributed to the decision by the school to pilot the national curriculum two years before it was required of them.Bishop Fitzgerald School whilst displaying features of good practice, was found to be working to an out-dated syllabus. Bayside School, for its part was found to be basing teaching in years 8 and 9 on the GCSE syllabuses for years 10 and 11.The study highlights the strengths and weaknesses of the English programmes adopted by the three schools and concludes that they are in a 2 fair position to react to changes in the English Orders once the current moratorium on changes draws to a close in the year 2000

Spherically symmetric solution in a space-time with torsion

By using the method of group analysis, we obtain a new exact evolving and spherically symmetric solution of the Einstein-Cartan equations of motion, corresponding to a space-time threaded with a three-form Kalb-Ramond field strength. The solution describes in its more generic form, a space-time which scalar curvature vanishes for large distances and for large time. In static conditions, it reduces to a classical wormhole solution and to a exact solution with a localized scalar field and a torsion kink, already reported in literature. In the process we have found evidence towards the construction of more new solutions.Comment: (v1) 14 pages, 3 figures. (v2) Version accepted for publication in General Relativity and Gravitatio

    Bioschemas:schema.org for the Life Sciences

Websites are commonly used to expose data to end users, enabling search, filter, and download capabilities making it easier for users to find, organize and obtain data relevant to their own interests. With the continuous growth of data in the Life Sciences domain, it becomes difficult for users to easily find information required for their research on one single website. Search engines should make it easier for researchers to search and retrieve collated information from multiple sites so they can better decide where to go next. Schema.org is a collaborative project providing schemas for semantically structuring data in web pages. By adding semantic mark-up it becomes easier to determine whether a web page refers to a book or a movie. It also facilitates summarizing information in a fashion similar to infoboxes used in Wikipedia. Bioschemas is a community effort aiming to extend schema.org to support mark-up for Life Sciences websites. Here we present an overview of the main types used and proposed by Bioschemas in order to support such mark up
