Trust Me! I am a European Central Banker

In the aftermath of the financial crisis, the ECB has experienced an unprecedented deterioration in the level of trust. This raises the question as to what factors determine trust in central banking. We use a unique cross-country dataset which includes a rich set of socio-economic characteristics and supplement it with variables meant to reflect a country’s macroeconomic condition. We find that besides individual socio-economic characteristics, macroeconomic conditions play a crucial role in the trust-building process. Our results suggest that agents are boundedly rational in the trust-building process and that current ECB market operations may even be beneficial for trust in the ECB in the long-run

In what forms does the genre of the novel appear nowadays? Is it possible, that the novel, which always rewrites and cancels itself, reaches total emptiness? On which cultural levels can we thematise the necessity of the redefinition of the genres? Could the narrative toolkit of the postmodern literature appear in a popular context? In this paper I discuss telenovels as a new form of the appearance of the novel along these questions. The investigation of the Latin American telenovels drives us to the questions of contemporary literary theory, such as the risomatic narrative structure that proliferates in itself, or the novel that demolishes its own frames. We can put forward the question, whether we can consider the telenovels as the popular appearances of the novel that thematises the problems of postmodern aesthetics. In my examination I compare the telenovels with some literary antecedents such as the tale of chivalry, and with contemporary examples, such as José Saramago. In my study I aim to the answer the question, whether the telenovels can be read as the continuation of the literary tradition and as an example of the contemporary novel that tries to define its own self-demolishing existence

We analyze various uncertainty measures for spatial diffusion processes. In this manifestly non-quantum setting, we focus on the existence issue of complementary pairs whose joint dispersion measure has strictly positive lower bound.Comment: revised and expanded, 10 page

    Organization of basal ganglia circuits

Anatomical regions and how we define boundaries between and within structures in the brain put a constraint on our understanding of the brain. More than a century of research on the brain has revealed its fundamental organization to be based on single nerve cells communicating through electrical signals over chemical synapses. The fundamental organization on higher levels than circuits has been harder to unravel and often left to intuitive definitions based on immediate visual appearances like cell density or other cytoarchitectural criteria. In this thesis, I've developed an anatomical method where the entire mouse brain is reconstructed from tissue sections. This method combined with a genetic strategy for retrograde transsynaptic labeling of genetically-defined populations lets us tease apart the connectivity in an interconnected set of subcortical nuclei known as the basal ganglia. The method can further be extended across a large number of cell types to find generic patterns of connectivity across the entire brain. Lastly, the method enables us to utilize recent advances in mRNA sequencing to resolve the entire transcriptome of a single brain. The method, therefore, enables investigators to map out the fundamental organization of the brain both in terms of gene expression and connectivity, thereby providing a novel way to redefine neuroanatomy
