Hierarchy and Competition in CSCW applications: Model and case study

    Get PDF
CSCW applications need to adapt themselves to the functional and organizational structures of people that use them. However they do not usually support division in groups with a certain hierarchical structure among them. In this paper, we propose and study a theoretical model of groupware appliations that reflects those hierarchical interactions. The proposed model is also intended to evaluate the effects in performance derived from competitive and collaborative relationships among the components of a hierarchy of groups. In order to demonstrate the above ideas, a groupware game, called Alymod, was designed and implemented using a modified version of a well-known CSCW Toolkit, namely Groupkit. Groupkit was modified in order to support group interactions in the same CSCW application. In Alymod, participants compete or collaborate within a hierarchical structure to achieve a common goal (completing gaps in a text, finishing numerical series, resolving University course examinations, etc.).Publicad

[EN] The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect that different types of feedback had on psychological and performance variables as a function of an athlete´s perception of his/her coach´s competence. A case study was conducted with 33 soccer players randomly assigned to three experimental conditions (positive and negative feedback and no feedback). Shot speed and accuracy, competence valuation, perceived competence, autonomous motivation and subjective vitality were measured. An α-level of .05 was employed for all the analyses. Positive feedback group exhibited higher levels of competence valuation, perceived competence of the player, autonomous motivation, and well-being than the negative and neutral feedback groups only in those subjects who had a high perception of the coach's competence. This effect was not observed in those with a low perception of coach competence. In this respect, the players’ perception of coach’s competence could be a factor in modulating the differences generated with regard to the type of feedback received.S

Large language models such as ChatGPT have the potential to revolutionize the construction industry by automating repetitive and time-consuming tasks. This paper presents a study in which ChatGPT was used to generate a construction schedule for a simple construction project. The output from ChatGPT was evaluated by a pool of participants that provided feedback regarding their overall interaction experience and the quality of the output. The results show that ChatGPT can generate a coherent schedule that follows a logical approach to fulfill the requirements of the scope indicated. The participants had an overall positive interaction experience and indicated the great potential of such a tool to automate many preliminary and time-consuming tasks. However, the technology still has limitations, and further development is needed before it can be widely adopted in the industry. Overall, this study highlights the potential of using large language models in the construction industry and the need for further research.Comment: 14 pages, 6 figure

A compilation of global bio-optical in situ data for ocean-colour satellite applications – version three

A global in-situ data set for validation of ocean-colour products from the ESA Ocean Colour Climate Change Initiative (OC-CCI) is presented. This version of the compilation, starting in 1997, now extends to 2021, which is important for the validation of the most recent satellite optical sensors such as Sentinel 3B OLCI and NOAA-20 VIIRS. The data set comprises in-situ observations of the following variables: spectral remote-sensing reflectance, concentration of chlorophyll-a, spectral inherent optical properties, spectral diffuse attenuation coefficient and total suspended matter. Data were obtained from multi-project archives acquired via open internet services, or from individual projects, acquired directly from data providers. Methodologies were implemented for homogenisation, quality control and merging of all data. Minimal changes were made on the original data, other than conversion to a standard format, elimination of some points after quality control and averaging of observations that were close in time and space. The result is a merged table available in text format. Overall, the size of the data set grew with 151,673 rows, with each row representing a unique station in space and time (cf 136,250 rows in previous version; Valente et al., 2019). Observations of remote-sensing reflectance increased to 68,641 (cf 59,781 in previous version; Valente et al., 2019). There was also a near tenfold increase in chlorophyll data since 2016. Metadata of each in situ measurement (original source, cruise or experiment, principal investigator) are included in the final table. By making the metadata available, provenance is better documented, and it is also possible to analyse each set of data separately. The compiled data are available at https://doi.pangaea.de/10.1594/PANGAEA.941318 (Valente et al., 2022)

Classification Rule Mining with Iterated Greedy

In the context of data mining, classi cation rule discovering is the task of designing accurate rule based systems that model the useful knowledge that di erentiate some data classes from others, and is present in large data sets. Iterated greedy search is a powerful metaheuristic, successfully applied to di erent optimisation problems, which to our knowledge, has not previously been used for classi cation rule mining. In this work, we analyse the convenience of using iterated greedy algorithms for the design of rule classi cation systems. We present and study di erent alternatives and compare the results with state-of-the-art methodologies from the literature. The results show that iterated greedy search may generate accurate rule classi cation systems with acceptable interpretability level

In the title compound, C31H38O17, the 1,3-dioxane and pyranoside rings both show 4 C 1 chair conformations while for the d-fructofuranoside moiety an envelop 3E conformation is observed. The phenyl ring is oriented almost perpendicular to the 1,3-dioxane ring [dihedral angle = 79.3 (2)°], and the acetate groups are equatorial for the pyranoside ring and axial for the furanoside ring. The analysis of potential hydrogen bonds shows both intra- and intermolecular C—H⋯O contacts to be present

The nitrogen source as a tool for weeds management

The results of biomass production both in terms of shoot and root, show distinct plants preferences for the nitrogen source; Amaranthus viridis and Chenopodium album prefers NO3 - and does not respond to the dose of NH4 +, Conyza bonaeriensis and Solanum nigrum also prefers NO3 - but respond to the dose of NH4 +, and finally Sonchus oleraceus prefers NH4 + over NO3 - and does not respond to the dose of NO3 -. Here, we also show that the source of N has a major role in plant N and C concentration. Overall, these results indicate that N fertilization (source and dose) may be a tool for the management of weeds in agricultural system where the farmer has control over the source of N applied

Exploring the independent association of employment status to cancer survivors’ health-related quality of life

Background: Having a job has been associated with better Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQOL) in cancer survivors. However, the sociodemographic and disease-related profiles characterizing the survivors being employed and those having better HRQOL largely overlap. The present study aims to discern the degree to which employment status is independently associated with cancer survivors' HRQOL or if it mainly reflects the impact of other sociodemographic and cancer-related variables. Methods: Cross-sectional study on a heterogeneous sample of 772 working-age survivors of adult-onset cancer. An instrument specifically designed to assess HRQOL in cancer survivors and Multivariate Variance Analysis (MANOVA) were used. Results: Survival phase, cancer type, and employment status showed the main effects on cancer survivors' HRQOL. In particular, being employed (vs unemployed) had the greatest positive association with HRQOL, affecting ten of the twelve HRQOL domains considered. Also, interaction effects highlighted the role of age (younger) and marital status (single) as risk factors for a greater negative impact of variables affecting the survivor's HRQOL. Conclusions: The application of a multivariate methodology sheds new light on two relevant issues for the cancer survivor's HRQOL: (i) the existence of differences between diagnostic groups that are not attributed to other variables such as sex, and (ii) the important and independent role that employment status plays. Comprehensive cancer survivorship care should focus more on high-risk groups and include having a job as an essential aspect to consider and prompt. The fact that the employment status is susceptible to change represents a valuable opportunity to care for the wellbeing of this population
