New perspectives and new scenarios of contemporary British theater

    Get PDF
The aim of this research is to examine the different tendencies in the contemporary British drama. More significantly we focus on the most representative trends and playwrights that emerged around 1995, that is the case of “verbatim drama” and the so-called “in-yer-face theatre”. This fact leads us to a retrospective look over the main elements involved in how British drama has flourished outstandingly, such as the renaissance of British theatre happened in the mid-1950s, the post-Thatcher social reality and the current socio-political events at national and international levels

    Get PDF

This study focuses on species richness, abundance, diversity, and seasonal variation of spiders in two coffee plantations with different crop management and a portion of tropical forest in two municipalities of La Costa region of Oaxaca, Mexico, using manual collection, foliage beating and pitfall traps. We collected 2,210 spiders belonging to 35 families, 100 genera and 146 species. The inventory includes 51 new species records for Oaxaca. Completeness values for two estimators indicate that the level of representation of inventories range from 68.25% to 78.44%, and the proportion of singletons range from 33.72% to 38.14%. Spider abundance in the rainy season was significantly lower than during the dry season. Spider abundance in the Tropical Forest was significantly lower than Monoculture site with the foliage beating method. Polyculture was the site with the lowest spider abundance with the pitfall traps. Rarefaction curves did not show significant differences in species richness between the sites and seasons. Hutcheson t-test showed that spider diversity was significantly lower in Monoculture than Tropical Forest during the rainy season. This study contributes to the knowledge of the arachnofauna of Mexico and particularly of the state of Oaxaca.

The use of tent roosts by phyllostomid bats has been poorly documented in Mexico. We report the use of tent roosts by the tent-making bat (Uroderma bilobatum) with palm fronds of Attalea butyracea in a riparian forest of the state of Oaxaca, southeastern Mexico

Relationship of rheological and microstructural properties with physical stability of potato protein-based emulsions stabilized by guar gum

    Get PDF
Despite potato protein is a great potential ingredient in food products due to its nutritional quality, it is not useful for the formation of sufficiently stable emulsions. For this reason, a widely used polysaccharide in the food industry, Guar gum, was added. The addition of guar gum to potato protein-based emulsions results in enhanced stability as demonstrated by the cooperative information provided by the combination of different techniques (rheology, optical microscopy and multiple light scattering). We established a relationship between a critical time for the onset of creaming and two rheological functions, namely the zero shear viscosity and the storage modulus. In addition, we propose a fast rheological method consisting of non-linear creep tests to detect shear-induced microstructural transitions

The Role of Probiotics and Prebiotics in the Prevention and Treatment of Obesity

    Get PDF
Obesity is a global pandemic complex to treat due to its multifactorial pathogenesis—an unhealthy lifestyle, neuronal and hormonal mechanisms, and genetic and epigenetic factors are involved. Scientific evidence supports the idea that obesity and metabolic consequences are strongly related to changes in both the function and composition of gut microbiota, which exert an essential role in modulating energy metabolism. Modifications of gut microbiota composition have been associated with variations in body weight and body mass index. Lifestyle modifications remain as primary therapy for obesity and related metabolic disorders. New therapeutic strategies to treat/prevent obesity have been proposed, based on pre- and/or probiotic modulation of gut microbiota to mimic that found in healthy non-obese subjects. Based on human and animal studies, this review aimed to discuss mechanisms through which gut microbiota could act as a key modifier of obesity and related metabolic complications. Evidence from animal studies and human clinical trials suggesting potential beneficial effects of prebiotic and various probiotic strains on those physical, biochemical, and metabolic parameters related to obesity is presented. As a conclusion, a deeper knowledge about pre-/probiotic mechanisms of action, in combination with adequately powered, randomized controlled follow-up studies, will facilitate the clinical application and development of personalized healthcare strategies.Supported by funds from European Union 7th FP KBBE.2013.2.2-02—MyNewGut Project (“Factors influencing the human gut microbiome and its effect on the development of diet-related diseases and brain development”, Grant Agreement 613979) and from Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness GD-Brain Projects (SAF2015-69265-c2.2)

Bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells characterization and transplantation in an animal model of congenital hydrocephalus

    Get PDF
Congenital hydrocephalus is a disorder presenting a degeneration of the periventricular cerebral parenchyma and the white matter, which causes significant mortality and life-long neurological complications. There are currently no effective therapies for congenital hydrocephalus. Bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSC) are considered as a potential therapeutic tool in neurodegenerative diseases, due to their ability to migrate to degenerated tissues and the production of growth factors. In the present study, using an animal model of congenital hydrocephalus, the hyh mouse, it has been studied the capacity of the BM-MSC to reach the degenerated regions exhibiting glial reactions and their probable neuroprotector effects. The BM-MSC were isolated from two different sources: a) transgenic mice expressing the monomeric red fluorescent protein (mRFP1); b) wild type mice. In the second case, the BM-MSC were labelled in vitro using bromodeoxyuridine, a fluorescent cell tracker and the lipophilic DiR. Before application, the cells were analysed using flow cytometry and immunofluorescence. The BM-MSC were injected into the retro-orbital sinus or into the lateral ventricle of hyh mice. After 24/96 hours of administration, the BM-MSC were detected under light, confocal and electron microscopes. The injected BM-MSC reached the degenerated periventricular regions and the disrupted neurogenic niches. They were detected in the periventricular parenchyma, around periventricular blood vessels and in the ventral meninges. Most of the applied BM-MSC expressed the glial cell-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF), in the same way as the periventricular reactive astrocytes, suggesting a possible neuroprotector effect.FIS (Instituto de Salud Carlos III)-FEDER a AJJ. Recursive Camera Autocalibration with the Kalman Filter

    Get PDF
Given a projective reconstruction of a 3D scene, we address the problem of recovering the Euclidean structure of the scene in a recursive way. This leads to the application of Kalman filtering to the problem of camera autocalibration and to new algorithms for the autocalibration of cameras with varying parameters. This has benefits in saving memory and computational effort, and obtaining faster updates of the 3D Euclidean structure of the scene under consideration
