Proceedings of: IEEE Symposium Series on Computational Intelligence (SSCI 2014). Orlando, FL, USA, December 09-12, 2014.This work describes a proposal for developing and testing a scalable machine learning architecture able to provide real-time predictions or analytics as a service over domain-independent big data, working on top of the Hadoop ecosystem and providing real-time analytics as a service through a RESTful API. Systems implementing this architecture could provide companies with on-demand tools facilitating the tasks of storing, analyzing, understanding and reacting to their data, either in batch or stream fashion; and could turn into a valuable asset for improving the business performance and be a key market differentiator in this fast pace environment. In order to validate the proposed architecture, two systems are developed, each one providing classical machine-learning services in different domains: the first one involves a recommender system for web advertising, while the second consists in a prediction system which learns from gamers' behavior and tries to predict future events such as purchases or churning. An evaluation is carried out on these systems, and results show how both services are able to provide fast responses even when a number of concurrent requests are made, and in the particular case of the second system, results clearly prove that computed predictions significantly outperform those obtained if random guess was used. This research work is part of Memento Data Analysis project, co-funded by the Spanish Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism with identifier TSI-020601-2012-99.Publicad

An Efficient and Scalable Recommender System for the Smart Web

This proceeding at: 11th International Conference on Innovations in Information Technology (IIT) Innovations 2015. Special Theme: Smart Cities, Big Data, Sustainable Development. Took place at 2015, November, 01 - 03, in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (IEEE IIT 2015).This work describes the development of a web recommender system implementing both collaborative filtering and content-based filtering. Moreover, it supports two different working modes, either sponsored or related, depending on whether websites are to be recommended based on a list of ongoing ad campaigns or in the user preferences. Novel recommendation algorithms are proposed and implemented, which fully rely on set operations such as union and intersection in order to compute the set of recommendations to be provided to end users. The recommender system is deployed over a real-time big data architecture designed to work with Apache Hadoop ecosystem, thus supporting horizontal scalability, and is able to provide recommendations as a service by means of a RESTful API. The performance of the recommender is measured, resulting in the system being able to provide dozens of recommendations in few milliseconds in a single-node cluster setup. This research work is part of Memento Data Analysis project, co-funded by the Spanish Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism with no. Empathy and Occupational Health and Well-Being in Ecuadorian Physicians Working with COVID-19 Patients: A Mixed-Method Study

    Get PDF
Approximately one out of ten COVID-19 cases in Ecuador was a physician. It has been reported that this situation has led to a serious detriment of physicians’ health and well-being. This study aimed to (i) identify predictors of emotional exhaustion, somatization, and work alienation in Ecuadorian physicians working with COVID-19 patients and (ii) explore the pandemic impact on doctor–patient relationships and on empathy. In 79 Ecuadorian physicians (45 women) who worked with COVID-19 patients, two separate multiple regression models explained the following: 73% of the variability of emotional exhaustion was based on somatization, work alienation, working sector, and passing through a symptomatic infection (p < 0.001), and 56% of the variability of somatization was based on gender and emotional exhaustion (p < 0.001), respectively. Furthermore, intention to leave the profession was more frequent among physicians with greater work alienation (p = 0.003). On the contrary, more empathic physicians never considered leaving their profession during the COVID-19 pandemic (p = 0.03). In physicians’ verbatim, cognitive empathy appeared associated to a positive change in doctor–patient relationships. On the contrary, having an overwhelming emotional empathy appeared associated to a negative change in doctor–patient relationships. These findings characterize differences in how physicians cope while working in the frontline of the pandemic

Continuous culture methodology for the screening of microalgae for oil

    Get PDF
A basic criterion in the selection of microalgae suitable as source of oil for biodiesel should be their actual capacity to produce lipids or, more properly, the fatty acid yield. Performance assessment of ten preselected microalgae under both batch and continuous culture points to the latter approach as the most adequate for evaluating fatty acid productivity. Differences were patent in continuous culture among strains that otherwise had analogous oil accumulation potential under batch culture. Some promising strains under batch culture (like Muriella aurantiaca and Monoraphidium braunii) exhibited, however, values for actual fatty acid productivity lower than 40 mg L-1d-1 in continuous regime. The analysis performed in photochemostat under continuous culture regime revealed the great potential of Chlorococcum olefaciens, Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata and Scenedesmus almeriensis as oil producing microalgae. Fatty acid productivity levels over 90 mg L-1d-1 were recorded for the latter strains under moderate nitrogen limitation, conditions which led to an enrichment in saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids, a more suitable profile as raw material for biodiesel. The continuous culture methodology employed represents a sound procedure for screening microalgae for biofuel production, providing a reliable evaluation of their fatty acid production capacity, under conditions close to those of outdoor production systemsEspaña MCINN Project CTQ2008-06741-CO2-02/PP

Semantic Similarity Measures Applied to an Ontology for Human-Like Interaction

    Get PDF
The focus of this paper is the calculation of similarity between two concepts from an ontology for a Human-Like Interaction system. In order to facilitate this calculation, a similarity function is proposed based on five dimensions (sort, compositional, essential, restrictive and descriptive) constituting the structure of ontological knowledge. The paper includes a proposal for computing a similarity function for each dimension of knowledge. Later on, the similarity values obtained are weighted and aggregated to obtain a global similarity measure. In order to calculate those weights associated to each dimension, four training methods have been proposed. The training methods differ in the element to fit: the user, concepts or pairs of concepts, and a hybrid approach. For evaluating the proposal, the knowledge base was fed from WordNet and extended by using a knowledge editing toolkit (Cognos). The evaluation of the proposal is carried out through the comparison of system responses with those given by human test subjects, both providing a measure of the soundness of the procedure and revealing ways in which the proposal may be improved. The development of this approach and its construction as part of the LaBDA-Interactor Human-Like Interaction System, part of the research projects SemAnts (TSI-020110-2009-419) and THUBAN (TIN2008-02711) and CADOOH (TSI-020302-2011-21), is supported by the Spanish Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Commerce and the Spanish Ministry of Education, respectively. Besides, the knowledge bases were populated using the COGNOS toolkit developed through the research project MA2VICMR (S2009/TIC-1542) supported by the Regional Government of Madrid.Publicad

The use of health resources is conditioned by several factors, that are not considered by health system. It is necesary to consider that factors in order to improve the efficiency and effectiveness, prevention, care and population health. This is especially important in a sociological and demographic context in which elderly and very elderly population is getting more and more importance. This fact, and its consequences, raise key issues not only in terms of efficiency and effectiveness of the health system, but also at the level of values and social rights.

Nanoencapsulated essential oils embedded in ice improve the quality and shelf life of fresh whole seabream stored on ice

    Get PDF
Ice containing essential oils (EOs) nanoencapsulated in beta-cyclodextrins (beta-CD) (named as EOs+beta-CD ice) was used for stunning/slaughtering by hypothermia in ice slurry, and for ice storage of gilthead seabream. Clove essential oil (CEO) was used at fish stunning/slaughtering, while ice storage of whole fish was performed using a combination of carvacrol, bergamot and grapefruit EOs (CBG). Inclusion complexes CBG+beta-CD were characterized, and antimicrobial effect was also evaluated. The kneading method used to form inclusion complexes with CBG showed a good complexation efficiency. Microbial, physical-chemical and sensory analyses were carried out to assess the quality changes of fresh whole seabream during ice storage at 2 degrees C for 17 days. Results (microbial, chemical and sensorial) indicated that seabream stunning/slaughtering and storage using EOs+beta-CD ice (in low doses of 15 mg/kg ice for stunning, and 50 mg/kg ice for ice storage) improved the quality of fresh fish and extended the shelf-life up to 4 days. This work was funded by PESCAMUR SL Company (San Pedro del Pinatar, Murcia, Spain) and CDTI (Madrid, Spain), Project Number: IDI-20150100, and co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the Pluriregional Operational Programme for Intelligent Growth
