Clay minerals as alteration products in basaltic volcaniclastic deposits of La Palma (Canary Islands, Spain)

    Get PDF
Clay minerals from several volcaniclastic environments including pyroclastic (tuffs), epiclastic (lacustrine, alluvial terraces, marine fan delta) and unconformity-related paleosols in La Palma (Canary Islands) were studied by XRD, SEM, TEM, HRTEM imaging and AEM. Clay minerals and their assemblages allowed us to distinguish between primary volcaniclastic basaltic material produced directly by pyroclastic eruptions and epiclastic volcaniclastic material derived from erosion of pre-existing volcanic rocks. The clay fractions consist mainly of smectite with minor chlorite, mica, chlorite-smectite mixed-layers and talc. Phyllosilicates of the epiclastic units display wider compositional variations owing to wide variations in the mineralogical and chemical composition of the parent material. Most of the phyllosilicates (mica, corrensite, talc and chlorite) are inherited minerals derived from the erosion of the Basement Complex Unit, which had undergone hydrothermal alteration. Smectites of the epiclastic units are saponite and beidellite–montmorillonite derived from the hydrothermal Basement Complex Unit and from volcanic materials altered in the sedimentary environment. Conversely, clay minerals of unconformity-related paleosols are dominated by smectite composed of variable mixtures of saponite and beidellite, which were formed by pedogenetic processes with later hydrothermal influence. The mineralogical association in the pyroclastic unit is dominated by hydrothermally formed smectite (beidellite–montmorillonite), zeolites and calcite. This paper contributes to the differentiation between pyroclastic and epiclastic volcaniclastic rocks of several depositional settings in a basaltic volcanic complex by their clay minerals characterization.Depto. de Mineralogía y PetrologíaFac. de Ciencias GeológicasTRUEpu

Assessment of reliability and validity of the Spanish version of the Nursing Students’ Perception of Instructor Caring (S-NSPIC)

    Get PDF
The care that clinical instructors demonstrate to students is essential for their education, considering the strong impact it has on their future relationships with patients, relatives, and other health professionals. Nursing Students’ Perceptions of Instructor Caring (NSPIC) is an instrument designed to assess nursing students’ perceptions of instructor’s caring behaviors. A trans-cultural, conceptual, and psychometric validation study was conducted with 315 nursing students at the University of Seville during their clinical practices in three regional hospitals. The NSPIC was translated and adapted to Spanish. The content validity was established by a panel of experts. To assess concurrent validity the culturally adapted Spanish version of the Clinical Placement Evaluation Tool (CPET) was used as a gold standard. The construct validity was determined by an exploratory factor analysis to identify the internal structure of the NSPIC-S. The internal consistency was established by Cronbach’s α and the intra-observer reliability for each item was established by test-retest. The content validity index varied between 0.53 and 0.93 and the correlation to the CPET was moderate. The factor analysis revealed a structure of five factors, one of which differed from the original scale. The value of Cronbach’s α was 0.95 and intraclass correlation coefficients varied between 0.5 and 0.89. Our study provided a culturally adapted version of the NSPIC, valid and reliable to be used in the Spanish context, the NSPIC-S

Is there an association between sleep disorders and diabetic foot? A scoping review

    Get PDF
Diabetic foot is associated with a low quality of life since physical disabilities, mood disturbances and psychological disorders are frequent. One of the most important biological processes to ensure quality of life is sleep. Sleep disorders can impair glycemic control in patients with diabetes mellitus or even cause long-term type 2 diabetes mellitus. The aim of this study is to carry out a scoping review about the association between sleep cycle disorders and diabetic foot. PubMed, Scopus, CINAHL, PEDro, Cochrane Library, SCIELO and EMBASE databases were chosen for the search and the following terms were used: “diabetic foot”,“sleep*”,“rest-activity”,“mood” and“behavior”. All the studies should include outcome variables about sleep and diabetic foot. Finally, 12 articles were selected, all of whichwere observational. The most frequent variables were those regarding diabetic foot ulcer aspects and diabetic neuropathy on one side, and obstructive sleep apnea, sleep duration and sleep quality on the other side. The results suggest that there is a possible association between obstructive sleep apnea and the presence or history of diabetic foot ulcers. No direct associations between sleep quality or sleep duration and diabetic foot or diabetic foot ulcer variables have been found
