    Get PDF

The Effects of Informational Feedback on the Energy Consumption of Online Services: Some Evidence for the European Union

Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) have scarcely been considered in studies on green consumption. Likewise, little attention has been paid to the effects of informational feedback on household energy ICT-related consumption. This paper aims to fill these gaps in the literature. Using microdata from a representative sample of the European Union population, this paper analyzes, in a novel way, whether the provision of information about the energy consumed by online services would make internet users change to a greener ICT consumption behavior. To assess this issue, Heckman type selection models are estimated. The results show that people’s concerns about environmental problems, their environmental activism and self-perceived efficacy as consumers are directly related to the influence that information provision exerts. We also find that frequent internet users and those with better digital skills are more willing to change their online behavior if given information on energy consumption

Our findings show a positive impact on the competitiveness of both networks. Those regions with higher capacities to establish bridging paths tend to show higher levels of competitiveness. Moreover, our results indicate that these effects differ between research and diffusion networks. Whereas the FP7-related network impacts all the dimensions of competitiveness, the CIP influences competitiveness only through the innovative channel. Our results highlight the importance of facilitating intra- and inter-regional collaboration networks between core and peripheral regions in Europ

Modelling economic structures from a Qualitative Input-Output Perspective: Greece in 2005 and 2010

The Input-Output model has made extensive use of graph and network theory, methods and conclusions, in order to carry out structural analysis; such extensions have yielded powerful insights on the relationships existing between industries in an economic system. It is customary in the field to take a deterministic perspective when analysing economic structures, using various measures derived from the Input-Output tables; yet the model can include stochastic experiments. This paper takes that course of action, aiming at modelling the Greek economic structure from a qualitative viewpoint for 2005 and 2010; moreover, sectors are divided by groups of differentiated technology intensity. The methodology is based on a model based on families of distributions that allow predicting and analysing network structures. Results are reached by a probabilistic approach, producing interesting insights about the economic structures under study, while revealing different behaviour of the different groups of industries, classified by technological intensity

Linkages, contagion and resilience: an input-output scope from the demand and supply side

The use of linkages to compare productive structures and discover key sectors is an active focus of research in input-output field. In this paper, an extension of the called multilevel indicators (García et al., 2008) to the key sector determination is proposed. The multilevel indicators not only describe industries with a strong influence on the expansion of other sectors in an economy but the immediacy and the transmission capacity of their impacts. The proposal opens a new inquiry about how the relational structure affects the contagion diffusion and the robustness of the economic system. The empirical key sector analysis will focus on the Greek economy. The study deals with the structural change of Greek economy in the last decade (2000-2010). Conclusions about the relevance of some activities for the development of Greek economy are offered

Virtual campuses provide a good opportunity of exploring new ways of teaching and learning under cooperative frameworks. Our experience in a virtual subject is exposed in this work. The course counts with a wide range of tuitional resources, tools of communication and continuum assessment. The Theory of the Information allow us assess the utility of these tools for the students' learning. The measures of information help to reduce the uncertainty over the learning process, the usefulness of different formats of evaluation and the importance of communicative and collaborative activities. The results provided evidence that significant differences existed by types of implemented activities. Collaborative frameworks and skills at searching for and analyzing complementary material result relevant to differentiate between student levels of competences.
