Innovation in the Public Library: where we are and where we go
Innovation, a key element in the current historical moment, it primoridal for all institutions face up to the challenges guarantees they face. Extraordinary absorption of decorated undoped graphene
We theoretically study absorption by an undoped graphene layer decorated with
arrays of small particles. We discuss periodic and random arrays within a
common formalism, which predicts a maximum absorption of for suspended
graphene in both cases. The limits of weak and strong scatterers are
investigated and an unusual dependence on particle-graphene separation is found
and explained in terms of the effective number of contributing evanescent
diffraction orders of the array. Our results can be important to boost
absorption by single layer graphene due to its simple setup with potential
applications to light harvesting and photodetection based on energy (F\"orster)
rather than charge transfer.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
This article aims to reflect on the way social anthropology can contribute to the study of migrations and, simultaneously, to “find out” what the discipline can also learn from this field of study, and thus to transfer its knowledge to other areas. From here we will learn how important here and there are for the study of migrations, not as situations or places, but as constructed and reconstructed notions of identification processes. From that point, we will try to show some examples of our ethnographic research that lead to the analysis of the concept of situation from its relational dimension. A notion of context that shouldn’t be seen in relation to space, but in the provision of meanings for the social and cultural events within it. Therefore a trans-scalar approach of anthropology will arise in a global context and referring to any sociocultural pnenomenon. Such an approach wil lead to the enforcement of a multisited ethnography.
Manipulating chemistry through nanoparticle morphology
We demonstrate that the protonation chemistry of molecules adsorbed at nanometer distances from the surface of anisotropic gold nanoparticles can be manipulated through the effect of surface morphology on the local proton density of an organic coating. Direct evidence of this remarkable effect was obtained by monitoring surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) from mercaptobenzoic acid and 4-aminobenzenethiol molecules adsorbed on gold nanostars. By smoothing the initially sharp nanostar tips through a mild thermal treatment, changes were induced on protonation of the molecules, which can be observed through changes in the measured SERS spectra. These results shed light on the local chemical environment near anisotropic colloidal nanoparticles and open an alternative avenue to actively control chemistry through surface morphology.LL and LML-M acknowledge funding from European Commission Grant (EUSMI 731019).
The compartment syndrome is a well described cli-
nical entity that results from increased pressure within a myo-
fascial compartment. An unusual case of a patient with
thrombopenia and a minimal traumatism, is reported. He
required fasciotomy of the anterolateral compartment of the
leg and, later, splenectomy. Late recognition and treatment of
this complication, as well as inadequate decompression, can
lead to loss of limb
Sofosbuvir improves HCV-induced insulin resistance by blocking IRS1 degradation
In the present study, we have demonstrated that sofos buvir (SOF) treatment improves systemic insulin resis tance in hepatitis C virus (HCV)-patients, and, for the first
time, revealed which molecular mechanisms are involved
in SOF effects on the impaired insulin response induced by
HCV in hepatocytes
